Is the cost of living impacting your beauty spending?

3 March, 2024 - 03:20pm by - BR-Queenie | 94 Comments

Is the cost of living impacting your beauty spending?

There is no getting away from it, and It’s a hot (hot!) topic at the moment. The price of just about everything, mortgage payments, rent, groceries, insurance, and your morning coffee, is only going one way, skyward!

But, how does this translate to our beauty spending? For many, it means making strategic choices at the grocery store, perhaps opting for promotions on essential items like body wash and deodorant, even if it means switching from our favourite brands to an untried one. The allure of salon-quality products may lose its lustre as more people turn to budget-friendly options found on supermarket shelves.

What’s your take on this?  Do you find yourself switching brands on essential items like Body Wash and Deodorant in the grocery shop to buy products that are on promotion? Changing from salon to supermarket Shampoo? Moving supermarkets from a full-service offering like New World to a discounter like Pak n Save?

When it comes to those coveted "non-essential" beauty treats, such as that irresistible Tom Ford lipstick or the latest Mecca Beauty Loop perk, the decision-making process becomes more nuanced. Are you still indulging in these splurges, or are you thinking twice in the face of tightening budgets?

It's a balancing act between satisfying our beauty cravings and being financially prudent in uncertain times. For some, the allure of that perfect shade or exclusive offer remains irresistible, leading them to maintain their beauty spending habits and save money elsewhere. For others, at this time it might be more serious…food or foundation.

Tell us your thoughts below on if your beauty spending habits have changed over the last 6 months and how, and you’ll go in the draw to win one of two $300.00 Beauty Packs each worth $587.00.**

I'm definitely buying more budget/supermarket options in things like body moisturisers, soaps, shampoos, etc. And I'm simply doing without non-essentials (which for me are things like perfume, toner, a dedicated eye cream...). Interestingly, I find I'm actually quite enjoying the simpler, leaner daily regime. The only two things I won't compromise on are my serum and my daily mineral spf moisturiser. They're doing all the heavy lifting in terms of anti-ageing and protecting. I'd cut back on non-essential groceries before scrimping on those two products.

The change for me is I am less likely to try new things. I don't want to risk wasting money if something doesn't work out, so I stick to my tried and tested, and buy what I know I will finish. I've been using up the things I have first before replacing anything.

I fell the above voting was a hard one. I am now committed to finishing each product I buy before purchasing a new one. I also search online a few weeks before I’m due to run out to make use I get my products on special!

8th March, 2024

I go online and do a search of which products work the same and are also more affordable. I try not to go without especially with moisturisers and my favourite lip balm.

8th March, 2024

I am now looking for cheaper products as I can't afford my normal ones. I Google search, best cheap moisturiser or best drugstore moisturiser. And go from there.

Unfortunately due to the cost of living crisis and lack of funds for “luxury” items such as beauty and skincare products (albeit from the supermarket) I have had to go without many things such as my regular sunscreen and moisturiser. I am now using less product to make it go further and have recently even stopped wearing makeup daily and only saving it for mainly special occasions. I had to weigh up whether my beauty regime was more important than feeding and clothing my children and I’m sure you will all guess which side was more weight bearing.

I’ve never been convinced that the “high end” products are always the best. Certainly cleansers don’t have to be expensive and products like the Garnier rose water makeup remover are just the best at an On Special price. Maybelline eye makeup has always been a good byt and so has their mascara options. Kiss n Makeup offer great deals for many online purchases and I’m a big fan of Revolution eye makeup colour palettes. I’ve trialled quite a few L’Oreal face creams for day and night and absolutely love them. Who doesn’t live those moisturisers at a good supermarket price? Don’t be fooled, look after your skin and the great deals work as well as those high end teasers!

I have cut back on my makeup and face care products over the last couple of years. Gone for what I need not what I want, I used to purchase extras to try on occasions and that has stopped.

8th March, 2024

Luckily I have not had to make any changes, but I've never tended to splurge anyway.

8th March, 2024

I am experimenting more with natural products that don't cost the earth but save essential items like sunscreen to still buy good quality. I don't wear as much makeup now.

8th March, 2024

Definitely buying less in general. Basic necessities replacing as needed. For makeup it will essentially be mascara. Skincare is a priority and I'm due to replace that shortly. In saying that, I think I'll be trying a mid range skincare line going forward to help with my current skincare issues instead of low end/supermarket.

I’ve started trying to work on my skin so I need less make-up. Trying to reduce my use to just some tinted moisturiser and a bit of blush/bronze. The cost of having the full array of beauty products I used to have is too much these days so I need to be careful and only buy what I absolutely need! Throw childcare and fuel costs in the mix and there’s very little left to pamper myself with. I’ve definitely started cutting the top off serums and creams to get every last drop out and look out for sales/promos. I also make sure there’s nothing else in my beauty drawer that can do the same job as the product I’ve just run out of… although that well is starting to run a bit dry!

I havnt changed too much, no kids at home makes a huge difference.

8th March, 2024

I have two kids who go to a school with uniforms, and both have birthdays in the first few months of the year. So I'm scraping the last dregs out of my skincare until I mid-april. And even then it's getting harder and harder to justify spending the money when groceries are going up every month.

8th March, 2024

The choices I make with my purchases at the moment are differenttheres alot more to think about, do I really need it? Because I love beauty and self care I have alot already in my collection if I run out of something I will see first if I have anything that does the same thing or maybe something I have that could do in the meantime and finish up everything so im not "collecting" more items that I only then half use or have many of. It's so hard to try and not buy the newest thing out but realistically if it's not a necessity or a priority. I think when you work hard a treat is nice so if I see something i like or want I will put aside money weekly and then at the end of the month I can purchase something and not feel bad because it's not coming out of essential living money. I've found by doing this the thing I wanted at say the start of the month I realise I didn't really want I just wanted something so then sometimes that money will roll over to the next month. I now use websites for things I use regularly like foundation, mascara even a nice body wash from Cosmetic Capital they have really awesome bargains and really well known brands for affordable prices instead of buying these things from the chemist or the warehouse. It's worth waiting a few days just to get a bit more for your money. There's some things though that I still do like to splurge on like a good shampoo, if it works it works,I just do it differently now in a way that doesn't break the bank. One thing I don't do now is go and get my hair done I just got it done professionally a year a go and asked for something that I could just maintain myself without wrecking it. I can't justify that cost at this time. It's a tough time for alot of people I just hope it doesn't last years

Yes, that's me too. I'll stick with what I know rather than taking a chance on something new.
