Is the cost of living impacting your beauty spending?

Is the cost of living impacting your beauty spending?

There is no getting away from it, and It’s a hot (hot!) topic at the moment. The price of just about everything, mortgage payments, rent, groceries, insurance, and your morning coffee, is only going one way, skyward!

But, how does this translate to our beauty spending? For many, it means making strategic choices at the grocery store, perhaps opting for promotions on essential items like body wash and deodorant, even if it means switching from our favourite brands to an untried one. The allure of salon-quality products may lose its lustre as more people turn to budget-friendly options found on supermarket shelves.

What’s your take on this?  Do you find yourself switching brands on essential items like Body Wash and Deodorant in the grocery shop to buy products that are on promotion? Changing from salon to supermarket Shampoo? Moving supermarkets from a full-service offering like New World to a discounter like Pak n Save?

When it comes to those coveted "non-essential" beauty treats, such as that irresistible Tom Ford lipstick or the latest Mecca Beauty Loop perk, the decision-making process becomes more nuanced. Are you still indulging in these splurges, or are you thinking twice in the face of tightening budgets?

It's a balancing act between satisfying our beauty cravings and being financially prudent in uncertain times. For some, the allure of that perfect shade or exclusive offer remains irresistible, leading them to maintain their beauty spending habits and save money elsewhere. For others, at this time it might be more serious…food or foundation.

Tell us your thoughts below on if your beauty spending habits have changed over the last 6 months and how, and you’ll go in the draw to win one of two $300.00 Beauty Packs each worth $587.00.**

I check around the shops to find out who has the brand on special or hold off until a special comes along ang then bulk buy.

Well l simply do not buy any products now unless they are on special or clearance is even better .Have also started making some items myself,

Finding myself only buying on promotion or from other retailers that have them cheaper online rather than instore. I put them in my cart, leave them there the whole day and if by the end I still want/need it I'll buy it. Helps with the ADHD excessive spending too

Hi beauties xx I have definitely had to go with out of my faves :( I love my Essano skin care and repair hair care, I was so gutted I couldn’t get the repair care best beauty box ever :( I’m hoping for my birthday I may get either one of those xx

I have certainly found it tough financially in the last year so have definitely had to cut back on any high end product. Either using supermarket brands or waiting for my product/s to go on sale. I definitely think twice now before I purchase skincare and makeup..."do I need it right now"? stops me in my tracks...no impulse buying.

8th March, 2024

I've been trying to avoid getting some products. I try and put it in my cart and then spend the day thinking about it and ask myself if I need it and then the next day my answer is always "not really, I can definitely wait".

With our mortgage going increasing by $200/week and many other bills increasing its been tough. I find I have been using more of my older products that didn't get used because I wasn't 100% happy with them, only buying the bare necessities and opting for more affordable products.

I haven’t been cutting back but I really need to so that we can make some saving and put money towards something more productive. This could only really be done if I found products of the same efficiency for a lower price as I am not willing to sacrifice the overall result, hence why I haven’t cut back yet. I would love to find cheaper alternatives but buying them and then not having the results I’m after and then not using them isn’t exactly going to be saving any money at the end of the day.

I've been cutting back, and going without. I don't need anymore makeup, I have everything I could possibly want. I'm trying to get more use out of the products I have instead of letting them go to waste. The only thing repurchase is mascara and eyebrow pencils, and they're usually from the cheaper brands, although I do like the one I'm using from Sephora. I'm also happy to wait until there are sales as well. I'm making sure I think through what I'm about to purchase instead of impulse purchasing things. I don't have an issue with shower gel as I buy the big containers of it, although that has its downsides being allergic to some ingredients. Shampoo and conditioner I usually buy 1L bottles of, so that way I get my monies worth out of it. Even though it might be more expensive at first purchase. Skincare is something I don't pay too much for, but I have my favorites. I've had to kerb my makeup spending because of other life admin.

I have definitely changed my skin care products and also makeup products, I have tried cheaper brands until I found the right 'mix' and the majority of my makeup brand is now Mcobeauty products. I find them excellent products and much cheaper.

I take full advantage of the Christmas sales and usually get the majority of my skincare at Christmas time, the skincare packs and discounts make it easier to purchase my skincare, so I have enough for a good portion of the following year. This can also be applied to makeup, and I try to ensure I have enough to go onto without running out. That being said I am always on the hunt for a bargain, there are usually sales on with the changes of the seasons, and the more bang-for-your-buck offers you can get, the better!! For stuff like shower gels, we buy a large bottle and decant it into a smaller bottle and that makes it last for ages. It is a fine line in knowing where to save and where to splurge, I pick up items when they are on special so I tend to not pay full price for anything, unless it's a 2-for-one deal or something like that. I also lusted after the Clinique Lunar Highlighter for 3 years before I bought one, so making sure you really would use a product rather than having it sit in the bottom of the makeup bag helps too.

I’ve changed my beauty products to a way cheaper brand as I can’t justify spending the money at the moment

8th March, 2024

To be honest I have always been a cautious buyer when it comes to make up. But of late I have tightened my spending and only buy if necessary. I look for deals where you can get free products included which help. Also use my current make up not every day but every other day. Mascara I cannot go without though but don't buy the expensive brands, look for alternative/ cheaper ones which do just as well.

8th March, 2024

As the cost of living doesn't seem to be getting any better I am going without on some things like foundation, powder and lipsticks but still purchase mascara and concealer just cheaper brands that seem to work for me.I just recently found a new hairdresser which is $100 cheaper and does just a good enough job if not better.I wasn't prepared to pay another $30 increase when she had just increased prices 5 months ago.

8th March, 2024

Definitely! I'm using a cheap Sukin moisturiser as a day and night cream rather than buying more expensive brands. Have had to ditch eye cream altogether! Also stretching out the trips to the hairdressers and opting for just a toner instead of foils. No foundation during the workday anymore, just tinted sunscreen. Gotta do what we gotta do!
