Light and Shade – are you in the dark?

Article by BR Kellie

It is said ‘Beauty Review never sleeps’, and I’m inclined to believe it. I’m also inclined to add to that ‘Beauty Review is always watching’ – like a really glamorous Big Brother (Sassy Sister?!) – and we couldn’t help but notice a thread on the forum where you gals talked about something you don’t do.

One of the big yeah-nahs brought up in the conversation was contouring. You know what, I can’t blame you. It’s scary! I only started doing it after a makeup artist showed me how, and even then I use the lightest touch for fear I’ll walk out of the bathroom looking like I’ve had a tussle in a mud puddle.

So what’s a girl to do? Shun it altogether? Or hide out in the bathroom and discover a way to brighten your skin and contour your face into modelesque symmetry with these simple (and uber beginnery) tips and tricks…

First rule? If it glitters, don’t use it. Contour is creating shadows in order to define, and I’ve yet to see a shadow that glitters. So start with a good matte bronzer (I use Benefit’s Hoola), or if you’re pale skinned, you can even use an eyeshadow in a light brown or even taupe shade.

Take your bronzer/eyeshadow and in circular movements using a contour brush (or even a smaller blush brush) sweep it in over the areas you want to define. If that’s your cheekbones, work from your middle ear towards the corner of your mouth. You can also contour under your jawbone, down the sides of your forehead, down the sides of your nose (but you’ll want to use a smaller brush for this). Start with a little product and add more as you grow more confident.

Once you’re satisfied with the result, take a highlighter (these come in liquid, powder and cream forms, but once again a good eyeshadow can do the trick), and run it along the areas you’d like to add light to your face - the top of your cheeks, in your cupids bow, down the length of your nose - and blend it out.

Now this is a very basic guide, I’m sure there are many more amazing ways to contour, but we’re not here to scare you, just to encourage you to give it a try. So to help you along your merry contouring path we’re loading up contouring tutorials in our Beauty Looks Video area check them out HERE – from easy steps to get you started to learning to contour like a pro, you can see for yourself how to get that defined jaw, sky high cheekbones, and slimmer forehead (I know! Who knew!?). And check out the video with the guys take on it all! Hilarious!

So will you give contouring a go? Or is it still on the no-go list? Are you an avid contourer? Feel free to add your tips and tricks below.

Oh this is right up my alley! I am so going to give this another go. I will master it if it's the last thing I do!

I've always wanted to try contouring but have never quite known how- thanks for the tips BR! Will attempt this one day when I've got plenty of time on my hands!

I usually give up lol I am guilty of using a bronzer that has a slight shimmer. Um the glam bronze by L'oreal. That's a powder. I seriously want to try cream contouring. I did try using the E.L.F Concealer Stick in Tan to contour but it sets to quick and I can't blend it fast enough , perhaps Tan was a 'too dark' shade to use anyways? I'd love to attempt a contour and highlight with the Fit Me Foundation Sticks. That I think maybe...just maybe I could do?

Great exactly what I do £I am using a bronze matte blush as my contour and liquid and powder highlight I see the difference but still want a real contour palette

I have not had great success with tiring to contour on myself, will try some of the above tips.

I contour as often as I can but more so to see if I can see any difference. I'm chocolate-skinned so that in itself is a mission to contour and my goal is NOT to look muddy. I actually love the whole process but have yet to be completely happy with the end result.

Kellie I wish you were around when I first started contouring, it wouldve made things so much easier! Everytime I wear makeup I contour, sometimes its subtle if Im wearing just BB cream or extreme contouring where I use cream and then powder if its a full day out doing something. Practice does make perfect, Ive been doing it since 2009 and I still am learning lol

Oh gosh I would t even know where to start with contouring. Even the word scares me enough to not want to attempt it.

Contouring seriously intimidates me!! I feel like I have no idea what I am doing and I don't want to leave the house looking like a fool! But I love the end result when it is done right, guess it's another one of those things to practice practice practice. Finding the right product would probably be helpful too

I've tried a couple of times without much success. The odd time its looked amazing, and the rest of the time, it just looks terrible :(

I have never contoured and reading this article, the thought of contouring doesn't seem as daunting. I would need to watch a few tutorials and practice a lot!!

11th May, 2015

I hardly every do it but sometimes I do like to give it a go and I not the best at it. Youtube videos are always good to watch if your still unsure about it all. One thing I have learnt is that you must blend, blend, blend!

I haven't tried contouring myself, but have had it done a couple of times for a makeover, would like to try it myself, though.

11th May, 2015

looking at tutorials is on my 'to do list' I'm fascinated by contouring but am yet to give it a go. I do t have all the right tools & products yet. But I will

I almost always contour my cheekbones and nose when I'm wearing makeup, not heavily but just enough to shape. Now that the seasons have changed I've been using Hoola for this as it's lighter than my other matte bronzer so the effect is softer. I'm still very amateaur at the highlighting part, I rarely highlight but if I do it tends just to be my cheekbones as I try to detract not attract attention to my nose.
