New Trend Alert!… Pigmented Arm Pits?

Armpit hair – it’s a love or loathe situation. People either embrace it and allow the hair to flow, or shave it religiously, fearful that anyone should see even a hint of stubble. But I wonder, what would it take for the follicle-free to change their minds and embrace their underarm hair? Would they do it if it became the hot new thing? Because… it has.

Late last year the fashion world was set alight by talk of pigmented pits – akadyed armpit hair - and it was deemed the new beauty trend for 2015. Where did this swing towards loving your pit pelt come from? And why?

It all started when Roxie Hunt, a stylist from Seattle, dyed her co-worker’s armpit hair blue to match the hair on her head. She took a photo of her work, posted it online, and from there the phenomenon took off. The #freeyourpits movement was created, with women all over the globe dying their armpit hair and sharing the results on social media.

It could be said this movement has been on the down low, as a fair few women I’ve spoken to (in a very unscientific survey) have never heard of it, but I believe that is about to end with singer, songwriter and actress, Miley Cyrus, holding her very own Pit Party on Instagram, and documenting the dyeing of her pit hair there.  My guess it’s only a matter of time before even more women jump onboard the #freeyourpits party - putting their pretty pitted arms up in the air and waving them round like they just don’t care.

So, do you think it’s wonderful that women are embracing all their hair and showing the world it’s natural, normal, and theirs to do whatever they want with?  Or are you fine with women choosing to express their right to do whatever they want with their body hair, but will be sticking to your shaver and keeping those pits soft and smooth? Or are you inspired? Will you be taking up the trend and colouring your pits a bright hue?

(And if you’re keen, Roxie Hunt’s how-to is here  and her manifesto is here.)

Dye pit is not for me, but if it is for you enjoy.

I actually think this is so cool! If more people were open minded I would totally do this - but I know I'll just get called "weird" and disgusting". But then again.. Who wants hairy arm pits haha.

Nah not for me. That seems like even more effort than shaving.

Just not for me! I like the clean pit look!

Hmm no thanks, I would much prefer to be armpit hair free. I don't see this trend working in the real world eithwe, I imagine anyone on the street rocking the look would get some pretty weird looks!

Ewww! NO just NO!

This trend definitely isn't for me

I kinda love it. Freedom for your own body! Do what you want. I'm still going to go through the process to get rid of my underarm hair though! I just like the look... and that is OK too. (Sometimes it feels like it is getting to the point where it is shamefull to want to not have hair... the feminist part of me wants to be OK with having hair, the rest of me just wants rid of it)

How out there is miley cyrus now? she makes me laugh. I myself wouldn't grow my arm pit hairs long enough to put colour on them but to the people that do ! GO them!! YOLO right?

Fine if they want to do it but I for sure won't be joining them any time soon (not unless a large monetary sum was involved)!

If someone wants to dye their armpit hair, that's their choice. I would much rather put the time and money spent on dye towards something else to beautify myself. I like bare armpits. It may be a trend now but I definitely don't think it's here to stay.

I love the fact that women are alot more comfortable in showing themselves in natural form. The woman's body is a beautiful thing no matter what so flaunt it hair or not. It's not for me but I think it's pretty funky to have pigmented pits and love the idea of it.

Yeeeehhh......... Nahhhhh not for me each to their own and all definitely not my cup of tea. I did see photos yesterday doing the rounds on faceache of rainbow coloured eyebrows.

It never ceases to amaze me what they will come up with next, definitely not my cup of tea.
