New Trend Alert!… Pigmented Arm Pits?

Armpit hair – it’s a love or loathe situation. People either embrace it and allow the hair to flow, or shave it religiously, fearful that anyone should see even a hint of stubble. But I wonder, what would it take for the follicle-free to change their minds and embrace their underarm hair? Would they do it if it became the hot new thing? Because… it has.

Late last year the fashion world was set alight by talk of pigmented pits – akadyed armpit hair - and it was deemed the new beauty trend for 2015. Where did this swing towards loving your pit pelt come from? And why?

It all started when Roxie Hunt, a stylist from Seattle, dyed her co-worker’s armpit hair blue to match the hair on her head. She took a photo of her work, posted it online, and from there the phenomenon took off. The #freeyourpits movement was created, with women all over the globe dying their armpit hair and sharing the results on social media.

It could be said this movement has been on the down low, as a fair few women I’ve spoken to (in a very unscientific survey) have never heard of it, but I believe that is about to end with singer, songwriter and actress, Miley Cyrus, holding her very own Pit Party on Instagram, and documenting the dyeing of her pit hair there.  My guess it’s only a matter of time before even more women jump onboard the #freeyourpits party - putting their pretty pitted arms up in the air and waving them round like they just don’t care.

So, do you think it’s wonderful that women are embracing all their hair and showing the world it’s natural, normal, and theirs to do whatever they want with?  Or are you fine with women choosing to express their right to do whatever they want with their body hair, but will be sticking to your shaver and keeping those pits soft and smooth? Or are you inspired? Will you be taking up the trend and colouring your pits a bright hue?

(And if you’re keen, Roxie Hunt’s how-to is here  and her manifesto is here.)

I HATE IT! If other women are confident enough to dye their pits then good on them! But personally I think it looks gross when there's tufts of funny colored hair under my arms. Heck even normal hair is gross to me!

I think I'll be giving this trend a miss.

Yeah nah not for me at all. I think its a little strange but in saying that i shave my underarms every couple of days so there is no chance anyone will ever see hair there. I do however think its great that woman can do whatever they like without being judged, after all it is their body and who are we to say what they can and cant do to it. Just because its something i wouldnt do doesnt mean its not for you

this is one trend I could never embrace, I feel its more hygenic and comfortable to shave my underarms, I feel like with the hair there it would trap the sweat and bacteria making them more smelly :s each to their own though. an interesting read!

Sorry not for me -sweaty armpits with coloured hair YUK!!

13th May, 2015

Hahaha embrace what you will beauties but I'm sticking with hairless. What will they think of next?

13th May, 2015

Umm, maybe for others, but personally I'd rather shave, it feels cleaner and more receptive to anti perspirant!

I will pass on the pit hair lol. each to their own but it kinda freaks me out, i know i know its natural but i prefer no hair there

haha didn't see this one coming! I'd do it, for a laugh! Actually I have a black & white party coming up! I think it'd be quite funny to colour my underarm hair an outragous colour for this.....

Not for me, I personally prefer no hair in that region at all, but it does make me wonder what effects this would be having to all the glands and that under the skin, they use to think certain deoderants caused breast cancer, so would having these chemicals so close to the glands have this effect aswell?

Hmmmmm nah they can keep their dyed pits. I'm all for dying hair but there are some places I would rather it would be hairless, and my pits are one of them!

Garden hair if the grass is in a nice little shapely bed. Some color can be fun, I think that trend despite not being advertised due to the location of the grass, will probably outlast this one.
