Photoshopping – Art or Evil?

Article by BR Kellie

Every now and then a member of the design industry releases a video of the work they do. It shows us how a good-looking but far from perfect woman is made perfect – or at least what some people in the beauty industry consider ‘perfect’.

A trio of such videos was recently released onto YouTube by RARE Digital Art. I opened up the links, ready to be outraged, ready to shake my fist at those who would make us lesser mortals feel like we have so much to live up to, when in fact all women, even the supermodels, can’t attain the images of beauty that are thrust upon us on a daily basis.

But something happened. I was bodysnatched. or brainsnatched, because as I watched the retoucher remove shadows, airbrush skin, straighten lines and tidy cuticles I found myself feeling… admiration.

I was impressed. This was no evil monster trying to make me feel bad about my pimples and uneven skin tone, this was an artist at work. Leonardo da Vinci had his paints and canvas.  Donatello had his bronze and wood. Retouchers have their pixels and pens, and like the artists before them, they manipulate them to create a thing of beauty.

So why the turnaround? Why am I suddenly ok with photoshopped images? I actually had to think long and hard about this, (my poor poor head) and I came to the conclusion that I’m no longer naïve about the industry. I know the images splashed on billboards, printed in magazines, and emblazoned across my computer screen are not real. I know they’re manipulated images, I know that the models used aren’t perfect – there are enough before and afters on enough gossip websites to prove it. And because I’m no longer naïve I don’t feel the need to get up in arms over it anymore, because nobody is pulling the wool over my eyes. So I’ve decided to just sit back, take it in, and enjoy the beauty – in the same way we might the Mona Lisa, or the David.

So tell me, do you see the digital alteration of pictures as evil? Do you think it’s no different to the way we add a filter to our pictures? Or are you able to appreciate the time and effort that goes into creating the images we see?

I enjoyed this & seeing the end result. I do think it has its place. I also think that this should be displayed or made know this is what happens to perfect a look or a poster/pictorial the likes because so many all ages try so ahrd to perfect a look thst simple isn't obtainable. I mean natural beauty is one thing but to get the look that's finally printed or displayed it's 9 times out of 10 photoshoped

Photoshopping, I believe there is a place for it but I do worry about the young girls that see these images and try to be just like them. They have not learned, as we have that these are not real. There are very real cases of young girls doing terrible harm to themselves trying to emulate the images they see. However, I would not mind one little bit if someone took their photoshopping skills to pics of me.

Oh my goodness! Even the fingernails are retouched?!?!? Wow pretty amazing really.

Each to their own, I really don't care if they are retouched or not, I don't think they are evil - someone is getting paid to do it :)

I suppose it is a kind of art for if you look at it in a different way! I understand why pictures for magazines are photo shopped, it would be great if they were a bit more transparent in it. Just because I know growing up, I always wanted to look like those girls and in reality, they don't exist.

PS is unbelievable and I can't believe how people so often frown upon clearly works of art. I am a novice (had training) but unfortunately I don't use it enough ...Love showing friends what PS can do - I don't ever go over board, just maybe take away some spots or tint a pix here and there and shift the focus on what is more important - its not just a click of a button...sometime I spend hours just doing a little to 1 photo for friends - I try never re-touch it to non-reality, just enhance every an day pix

I need photo shop to get ready for work each day. When I look and magazine covers I know that they have had that much work done to them. It is an art for sure.

I adore Photoshop and am very good at it but I don't agree with the artificial standards it creates and the hype that 'real' women (i.e. you and I) have to try to live up to. Even models have insecurities though, probably more than most.

Hmmmm. I agree, my poor brain is put through the wringer thinking about this too. It definitely is an art form. The talent that these retouchers has is amazing. And I don't look down on that at all. What I wonder though is what are they creating. They are creating a perfect image. And that is fine but when someone looks at that they see what they should be, not the process that goes into it. These videos don't even point out the process that went into it before it got to the picture phase. I would really really like to know what a model thinks when they see this being done to a picture of themselves? Do they see this as part of the business? Or do they feel a bit bad that they didn't look that way originally? And what do they think when they see pictures retouched of others?

My jaw dropped when I watched this and I know that pics are retouched but just the amount of work that goes into the one pic is amazing. I don't see anything wrong with digital alteration it's just often people are blinded by the drive to be "perfect and flawless" that they forget the reality that pics are photoshopped. I think the pics that annoy me the most are those for mascaras - false lashes really haha.

I have nothing against photo shopping but it's unfair to photo shop someone and say that they look that way naturally and then set that as the standard for everyone else. Those that do photo shop it's definitely an art.

15th May, 2015

Definitely art! I'd happily learn how to do that. Honestly don't see why people think photoshop is so bad. I think it's incredible that a computer program can make someone look 10times prettier!

15th May, 2015

I honestly think it depends on who is using Photoshop and the end result. Photo manipulation is an art, a skill, but in the wrong hands can be atrocious in nature; bare in mind it is like anything inanimate being given a bad name... it is the individual users or the industry standards that are to be called into question. It is a tool.. like a hammer, it can build something beautiful in the right hands or smash something fragile in seconds in the wrong.

There are literally HOURS of work that goes into photo shopping those photos and all the praise goes to the photographer and the model, not the person doing the retouching but kudos to those people, they do an incredible job.

15th May, 2015

I would probably feel better about getting my photo taken if they were retouched I haven't a clue how to do it though.

Such a cool Video. It's definitely an art! I have photo shop on my computer and it is so so technical. I think I have only just broken the surface of it. I don't use it too much and it's mainly only on landscape photos. It's easier getting the settings and lighting right on my camera rather than using photo shop. It's a tricky one in the beauty industry though. Especially if it's for a new revolutionary cream that shows before and after photos. Slightly misleading
