Salon Manicures - What to expect and when to run a mile.

Article by BR Natalie

Have you ever noticed you hold your newly manicured hands differently?  Not the "I'm not sure if my nails are wet" hold, rather the "every time I use my hands I must accencuate my mani" hold. There's nothing quite like having your nails done to give you a lift.

But do you know what you should expect from a salon manicure?

The Establishment.

1.  The salon should be spotless.  There's an unwritten rule of the industry - if you have nothing to do, you clean.  All tools should be disinfected between clients.  If the salon doesn't gleam, walk on by.

2.  As with any service that involves direct contact with a client, you should feel comfortable from the moment you walk in.  Check out our article The Role of a Beauty Therapist for more information on this.

3.  Prices for manicures vary dramatically from a regular Beauty Salon to a chain of nail bars.  You can expect to pay around $35 for the latter, and up to $70 for a salon offering a full range of services.  It really depends on the experience you will be happy with, but it is safe to say, you get what you pay for.

The Manicure.

A manicure can take anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half.

1.  Your manicurist will wash her hands and apply sanitiser to yours.

2.  Any existing nail polish will be removed and your nails will be shaped with a file.  Decision 1 - what shape nail do you prefer?  Round, square, oval, squoval, points? If you're not sure your therapist will be able to help you decide what is best for you.

3.  Cuticle oil or cream will be applied and your cuticles will be gently pushed back.  Decision 2 - Do you want your cuticles trimmed?  It's generally recommended that you don't, unless there is a pressing need. Even the steadiest hand can accidently nick the skin, which will be sore and could lead to an infection.

4.  You will most likely be soaking one hand while the technician works on the other.  Some salons will exfolliate the skin before soaking it.  You shouldn't be soaking for more than 5 minutes, otherwise the nail bed will swell and any nail polish applied with crack as the nail bed dries and contracts.

5.  It's massage time!  Sit back and enjoy the hand massage, which will most likely include reflexology.

6.  It's time for polish.  Decision 3 - What look do you want to rock?  You'll probably be overwhelmed by the choice of colours!  If you're nervous about a bright shade the French Manicure is the eternal classic - but again ask your Nail Technician for advise.  Many are very skilled and will be able to suggest a fun twist on a classic look, a feature nail or even a little bit of nail art.

7.  You'll probably end up sitting with your hands under a UV light.  UV light helps your nail polish to dry and harden.  You'll probably be under the spotlight for 5 minutes - but you'll want to be careful with your nails for the next few hours.  If you do get a chip in the hours after a manicure, don't be afraid to call the salon.  Many will offer to fix up the nail for you.

The technological advances in the beauty industry increase daily, so look for a salon that is up to date on the services they offer.  Gel polishes that can last for 10 - 14 days are among the latest services many salons now own.

Wishing I had read thus before damn it. I will take note the next time I go in.

27th April, 2014

Such a good read, I have been to few nail salons who seems as though they concentrate on quantity of clients rather than quality. Hygiene obviously a huge part of health and I would much prefer to do my own nails. However when I do decide to splurge out on salon treatment my favorite part is burying my feet in the bubble bath right before a pedicure.

I love manicures! I don't get the time these days, nothing looks better than freshly painted and groomed claws, my favourite part is pretty much the whole thing! Having someone pampering you is one of the most best things in the world!

I do mine myself, by 'doing them' I really only file & paint haha. One of my good friends is a Technician & on occasion I'll spoil myself & get her to give me a Mani or Gels but probably not often enough! I really want to get a good Pedi but I haven't quite built up the courage. I have a thing about my feet being touched...

I got my nails done once and while the job was well done the service wasn't quite up to the same standard as the girl pretty much ignored me and then had a prolific chat to the girl next to her in another language which was a bit rude. Haven't been back to that particular place but haven't written off salons because of it, I think its nice to go get it done by a professional once in a while as a treat (I normally do my french mani/pedi myself) especially if I'm wanting to try something new or go for some nail art, some things are just left better to the professionals.

Funny I was just thinking today as I walked past a beauty salon, now that I have finally grown my nails - its maybe time to treat myself to a mani rather than my own sloppy nail job - I havent had enough practice yet!! At least reading your blurb I know what to expect when I do finally get around to having the treat!

Well obviously I am going to all the wrong places to get mani's!! URGH :(

24th April, 2014

I used to until every time I had a manicure or a pedicure I was left with fungal nail, verucca's, athletes foot. Obviously I got more than I paid for! They certainly didn't wear gloves or sanitise anything before starting. So I guess it's my own fault for thinking I was getting a bargain, but really - they must have to have some standards?? I do it myself now, which really is nowhere near the pleasurable experience of having somebody else massage my feet and do a lovely job of painting my nails!

PC (pre-child) I used to love getting manicures from my lovely beauty therapist. I always walked out feeling like a proper lady. I had a pedicure once at one of the mall salons in Aussie - never again. Instead of being relaxing it felt like a session in a torture chamber.

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/video/nail-salon-dangers-book-23404524 Just found this video about "dirty" little secrets of nail salons. I might say those dark secrets are absolutely true as my roomie is working at a nail salon. So, check it out ladies, they have great tips to spot out good salons too

I try to treat myself to a manicure every few weeks or so. I must admit most times I go for a manicure not all of the above points are followed! It's quite disappointing really as sometimes you are really craving that hand massage and to be pampered a little rather than just rushed through and out the door!

21st April, 2014

I love a 'Good' manicure; but there are some below par salons out there so thoroughly inspect before you allow them to start. And I love the lasting power of the Gel polishes... seriously good!

21st April, 2014

That first statement is so true, I only ever do my own nails but I love having fresh nail polish on, it really makes me feel so polished. One day I would love to get a great nail art set done but until then I'm happy to buy my own polish and do it myself

21st April, 2014

I almost always do my own mani/pedi because it's more economical and I can fit it in whenever it's convenient. But I do enjoy the pampering. I have had a mani/pedi when I lived in Asia because it was so cheap. Looking back it was probably too cheap and I'm sure of the hygiene. I did get my nails done once at a nice salon that belonged to my friend. And I've gone for pedis when a lady I knew would give me a good price and I always enjoyed dropping by and walking out with pretty toenails.

21st April, 2014

Because of my work I need to keep my nails mercilessly short. I must wash my hands upwards of twenty times a day as well so my poor little mitts are more than a bit weathered! With hands like that I try not to draw attention to them anyway, don't even wear rings other than my wedding ring. I do feel a bit wistful when I see how elegant long, lacquered nails can be. Maybe I should have a go at a pedicure though? I paint my own toenails in the summer, but sometimes my toes seem like they are a long way away!
