Salon Spray Tans – What to expect

Winter is all about faking it - But we know some of you are still nervous about taking the plunge!  So instead of avoiding it at least give a professional the chance to show you just how amazing faking it is.  I caught up with Beauty Review's resident Beauty Therapist Zoe to find out what to expect from a salon spray tan - and how to get the best out of one.

Before you go to your tanning session:

  • Prepare your skin by waxing, epilating or shaving unwanted body hair 24 hours before you go for your tan.
  • Exfoliate your body with a sugar or salt scrub to remove dry or flaking skin.
  • On the day of your tan shower with a gentle body wash to remove any remaining products.
  • Avoid using moisturiser or any body products, except on areas of extreme dryness, such as elbows and knees.  This should help prevent any colour build up.
  • Don't wear deodorant or makeup.
  • Remove jewellery.

Things to take with you:

  • Hair ties / grips
  • Loose fitting clothes - go for old clothes and definitely don't wear white!
  • Lip Balm
  • Umbrella (just in case it rains)
  • A towel for you car seat if you're wearing shorts or a skirt.

When you're at the salon:

  • Arrive a little early, especially if it's your first time at the salon.  Most establishments will want you to fill out a client form.
  • Together with your technician decide the best shade for you.
  • Remove your contact lenses!
  • Tie your hair back and if offered a hair net, wear it.  (We know, it's a glamourous business)
  • Apply lip balm to your lips and you might want to apply a little to your hair line.  It'll be easy to simply wipe the tanning solution away afterwards.
  • You'll be offered a disposable g-string to wear, but most technicians will be comfortable if you choose to go naked.  They're really not going to see much either way!
  • Your tech may use a tan preparation spray to remove any product residue or perspiration.
  • The salon should also apply a barrier cream to areas such as your elbows, knees, hands, feet to prevent unwanted discolouration.
  • Listen to your technician while she sprays you! She might ask you to turn or lift your arms / bend slightly.  She's only trying to get an even coverage.

After your spray tan:

  • Wait at least 10 minutes before getting dressed to let your tan dry.
  • Use the provided wipes to clean your hands and don't forget to remove the lip balm from your lips.
  • Avoid water, exercise and anything that makes you sweat for at least 8 hours.
  • Don't use anything 'scubby' like a wash cloth or washing net during the first shower; just a gentle body wash.  Pat dry.
  • Don't stress if you see colour washing away - that'll be the 'colour guide' that is a bit like instant tan and allows the tech to see where she's sprayed.
  • Keep moisturised and consider using a tan extender.

Zoe's top tips for a salon spray tan:

  1. Think of it as a team effort - do your part by exfoliating and shaving the day before your spray tanning session.
  2. Don't be shy - seriously my top two salon treatments are Brazilians and spray tans.  Lady parts, schmady parts.
  3. When in doubt about which shade to choose, opt for the lighter.  You can always go darker next time.

Do you regularly opt for a salon spray tan?  Or is it something you want to do, but haven't been ready to take the leap yet? Share your thoughts below!

  • Exfoliate and shave the day before your spray tan. Experienced tanning pros swear by exfoliating because it creates a perfectly polished surface for the tanning mist to work its magic.
  • Choose a tanning solution that suits your skin tone. Spray tans are available in a variety of shades that range from subtle colour to the deepest and darkest tan imaginable. The solution you should choose depends on your natural skin colour and your personal preferences. When in doubt, go with the lighter option. You can always deepen your colour later with bronzers and tan enhancers.
  • Let your salon technician know that you are a beginner. Salon employees are experts at spray tanning, and they work with people like you every single day. They can give you insider spray tan tips and help you pick the best colour for your skin.
  • Ask for supplies. Most tanning salons offer free supplies for their tanning booths, including disposable G-strings, hair protectors and eye goggles.
  • Buy some tan enhancers before you leave. Salons usually carry high-quality brands that are designed to work with the type of tanning solution they use in their tanning booths. Gradual tanners, moisturisers and instant bronzers are a few examples of products that can help you get the most out of your spray tan after you get home.

Awesome article I've only once had a spray tan which looked good for a few days but I found went really patchy after that, had it done for wedding so looked amazing on the day but I was thankful it was winter and could cover how awful it looked till it had completely faded. Perhaps my dry skin was to blame? Haven't tried again but would for a special occasion just need one!

I would love to try a salon tan - just haven't got around to it as yet, little bit of don't have the money and a little bit of scared it may all go horribly wrong!!!

Despite having a recent run in with the orange fairy I am a huge fan of a fake tan. I do not tan and avoid the sun (sun damage is soooo out people) but a good spray tan is worth it's wait in gold. Find one that works with your skin tone and you are away. I love the eco tan range......

I have only used the home spray on my legs but I was really impressed. I would use a salon spray tan prior to an early summer event.

I have never had a spray tan. I have seen so many botch jobs and orange tints, it just frightens me!

I have thought lots about getting a spray tan! The only thing I am scared of is running or coming out streaky and looking like an oompahloompah!! It's not something I would get regularly due to budget constraints and also time. Maybe if I knew someone who does it I would get one done. But really if you prep properly and go to a good spray tanner you shouldn't come out orange lol. Still not brave enough to try one yet. Maybe if I was to go on an overseas holiday to somewhere tropical I'd get one..................dreams are free

I had a spray tan done for my sisters wedding and after being assured it would not tan my lovely pale pink dress it left horrible stains under the arm pits that would not dry clean out. Would definitely recommend wearing dark clothes that won't stain when you have a spray tan done.

I've only done at home fake tans and they never work that great. I am thinking of doing a spray tan, just need to look into the price first.

Im always scared they will turn out super snooki like lol

I spray tan regularly- every 7 to 10 days and I love it! I feel so much better being tanned, the solution I use is a 2 hour solution so I don't have to wait 8 hours to wash off which I find very handy :)

I have used a spray tan twice . Both for special occasions. I loved it! It was even and lasted a while.

I'm olive skin and still do spray tans I like being "tanned" in winter even olive girls feel white. I have a tan machine & tried salon to. Key is prep if you want a good long lasting tan

I've never had a spray tan at the salon, but these are really good pointers and helpful to a newbie!

I used to be so jealous of caucasian women with beautiful porcelain skin but now I realized that a bit of color is also desirable. I may not be able to rock blonde hair or blue or green contacts (and look natural) but after reading how people will willingly sun roast or pay money to get a spray tan makes me thankful for the bit of color than mine has naturally.

Never tried tanning before, so I'm not sure how it would look. :/
