Save or Splurge? Mascara

Whenever we need a new product, we're faced with the inevitable question - do you have to spend more for a good product? Can 'budget buys' ever really compete with an upmarket brand?  Our new feature Save or Splurge gives our Review Heroes the chance to tell us.

First up - mascaras. We sent 3 Review Heroes two different products from two very different price ranges.  Lancome Hypnose Star and Miki Mascara.

For $60 Lancome Hypnose Star has a "dual-action brush with a flat side for optimizing product deposit at the lash line while the rounded side separates, defines, and lengthens.".  For $3 the Miki Mascara promises to "create beautiful, thick lashes in a single brush stroke."  So will our Heroes recommend you use your pocket money, or break in to your piggy bank?

Review Hero Cat

What a tough decision this was!  I thought it would be straight forward but Miki surprised me. I really enjoyed both mascaras. I thought I'd include some pics of the 2 in action.

I think Miki is a tough contender for Lancôme.  While Miki did a great job I think the fact that Lancôme is waterproof makes it a better product. Lancôme didn't flake and lasted until I removed it with coconut oil. Miki lasted well too, just not as well.  Lancôme also thickens the lashes more.

It's tough because I want to say I preferred the cheaper product as it's super affordable and I loved the natural look it gave my lashes, but Lancôme definitely created nicer lashes and lasted superbly.

Verdict: SPLURGE

Review Hero MissAimeeJean

While you shouldn't judge a product on its packaging, it was very clear to me when I opened my BR parcel which mascara was the save and which was the splurge. Lancome Hypnose Star was housed in a shiny silver box, and then in a gorgeous jet black tube with silver glitter working its way up the tube. It is the most beautiful mascara packaging I have ever seen, and in fact I would go so far as to say it is one of the most beautiful cosmetic containers ever! This is in contrast to the cheaper Miki mascara that was in a very plain black tube, with no special features that draw your attention to it.

The Miki mascara lengthened my lashes, and made them look very natural. However this mascara did not add any volume to my lashes at all, even though this was a major selling point for the product. I was surprised that the mascara was sold as "a mascara that creates beautiful, thick lashes in a single brush stroke." I found that this was not the case at all. I kept dipping the wand into the mascara to ensure it was fully coated with product, however even this did not help. On the other hand after only a few strokes of the Lancome wand I noticed that my lashes were becoming very long and voluminous, which well exceeded my expectations.

Lancome's Hypnose Star came out on top because of its beautiful packaging and overall performance in creating long, voluminous lashes.  However I know that for many BR girls $60 for a single mascara is probably out of their price range, and for only $3 Miki is a good option, and is a lot more affordable. In an ideal world I would recommend that everyone go out and purchase Lancome Hypnose Star Mascara, however Miki is definitely a good alternative for those girls who do not want to spend a 'fortune' on cosmetics and would be perfect for anyone only just starting to wear makeup. For me personally I would prefer to pay more money for a mascara that adds volume and length, and for that reason I would splurge on Lancome!

Verdict: SPLURGE

Review Hero Micht

In comparing these two mascaras, i found them both quite different in their packaging, applicator and application.

Miki Mascara is good in terms of price but other than that I do feel you get what you pay for with it. It applies cheaply and dries out too quickly and is so not smudge resistant or waterproof.

On the other hand with the Lancome Mascara I found that as much as the price was not the best, it performed much better. It's applicator was better, it was easy to apply and the difference was instantly visible, its also waterproof.

As much as the price may hurt my pocket a bit, I would rather it hurt there than cause me to be embarrassed as I know the Miki one would do, when I walk around with Panda Eyes. All in all, my decision on this would be to Splurge (And trust me, I am as frugal as they come- so when I say it, ISO mean it!)

Verdict: SPLURGE

So there we have it - the Review Heroes unanimously recommend you splurge on mascara - although we have to say we're quite impressed with how Miki Mascara put up a pretty good fight!

Any ideas for the next Save Or Splurge?

I have used Lancôme mascara for years & then decided to try some others as I felt I wasn't getting the same effect as I used to. I have tried a number of different ones & am currently using Maybelline. I don't have a problem with splurging but it's hard to know how mascaras are going to perform & it's expensive to keep buying them until you find one you like.... It was good to see the photos - a true representation of the differences between two products. I feel persuaded to try the new Lancôme one.

I'm really not sure I could use a $3 mascara, but that's really being snobby as the pics cat took show the miki mascara to do a good job.

Love the photos! Really showed you what they look like. I quite like the natural look so that mascara would probably work well for me, and while I do like to splurge once in a while, it's quite hard to considering the student budget.

What an awesome write up! I totally agree with you on this one, id rather spend on mascara if its worth it, but honestly the Miki mascara looks great! More so if your wanting a natural look to your lashes, I love the Benefit "Theyre real" mascara, the best ive had!

I was waiting for these results! Sounds like the lancome mascara is the one to go for. I was impressed though by the miki mascara as it sounds like it came pretty close, and as its more in my budget range I might have to try it. Cats pictures are a good idea and her results look pretty similar too. I enjoyed following this battle, thanks BR

Awesome read thankyou!

I'm a budget girl myself, but am obsessed with the Maybelline Colossal atm.

From the pictures the Lancôme mascara doesn't really look that much better than the Miki mascara. I don't think I would splurge, but I'll probably go for something worth a little more than the Miki as well. I'm sticking with my Za Perfect Action Mascara.

It'd be interesting to know what the long term performance of these 2 products is like - in the past I've found the cheaper products shelf life very disappointing often drying out or going gluggy long before being anywhere near the of the product where as I've always found high end mascaras to keep their consistency right down to the last drop making them well worth the spend IMO

Great pics Cat. I would never have considered trying a $3 mascara. And I do like and use Lancôme. Mmmmm food for thought.

20th May, 2014

Oh, now I have no reason not to try the lancome doll eyes! Hopefully it's as good as this one.

Great reviews ladies. Was interesting that you all chose to splurge which is a good thing. I would always save up to buy the better one when it comes to mascara and tend to buy via duty free or strawberrynet so that it is cheaper.

I guess I was bitten a long time ago with a cheapie mascara because the fumes made my eyes become irritated, but I guess the cheapies nowadays are a lot better than back then.

Great SoS reviews! Im just a tad gutted the under dog Miki didnt win haha I must say Cat your eyes look fantastic but I do prefer your lashes in the front on view with the Miki mascara they look so natural & beautiful. I think you might just have great lashes & anything would look good on them :D

19th May, 2014

I am a major sucker for pretty packaging so I do love the Lancome one, but $60 is still way too much for me and like a lot of other commenters I generally go for the middle of the range products.

19th May, 2014

I would definately always splurge if i had enough money to keep repurchasing the products !

19th May, 2014

I think the test would have been better with a standard "affordable" mascara rather than a $3 one, that's not to say that the $3 one isn't good but most people tend to buy $20 mascaras - "drugstore" ones such as Maybelline. It'd be nice to see a comparison between something like that with the high end one as well as I think the battle would be a lot more helpful.

Please don't bite my head off anyone!
