Seven Beauty Habits To Step Up In The New Year

By BR Amelia

While we can choose to start a better beauty routine at any time of the year, New Year feels like the perfect time - a fresh start for a new year. So what are the routines that we can up our game on this year? Check these out...

1.  When it comes to cleaning brushes It's so easy to just think 'tomorrow, I'll do it tomorrow', but it's so easy for that tomorrow to turn into a month... or more. And during that month your brushes are being exposed to more product, dead skin cells, bacteria, general dirt. It's all a bit gross if you think about it too long. The internet will tell you to wash your brushes anywhere from every day to once a month. We're aiming for once a week. The pay off? Product applies better, skin is less likely to be irritated or break out, and your brushes will last longer.

2.  Speaking of caring for our face by giving things a wash... If you haven't implemented a skincare regime then now's the time to start. It doesn't have to be a fancy ten-step K-beauty extravaganza, but committing to simply cleansing and moisturising your face twice a day (with products suited to your skin type) will leave your skin looking clearer, brighter and hydrated. Once you're comfortable with that you can add in a toner, serum, eye cream, exfoliant - and next thing you know you'll be like BR Kellie and spending forty odd minutes on her nightly routine and getting asked for ID at the tender age of 38.

3.  You know what makes a person beautiful? Feeling good about themselves. You know what can help you feel good about yourself? Exercise. We're not talking in a physical manner here, either. We're talking mentally. A good bout of exercise can clear the cobwebs, give you time to sort out the stuff whirling in your head, and then there's that delightful endorphin boost. Whether it's a 30 minute power walk or a one hour boot camp, we think regular exercise is just the ticket for helping us feel fab this year.

4.  Holding onto an eyeshadow palette that's way too old? Got a lipstick rollling around your purse that's been there since the Spice Girls came out but you're unwilling to part with it? Make this the year that you commit to keeping your cosmetics fresh. As we've said time and time again, cosmetics have expiry dates (read that article here), and keeping hold of them - and using them - can lead to infection, break outs, irritation. And ain't nobody got time for that.

5.  Could we harp on anymore about sunscreen? No. We. Can't. If you're heading out then slap it on. The amount you need to use? Sunsmart.org.nz suggests that you use about half a teaspoon for your face, ears and neck, and one teaspoon on each of your legs, arms, and the front and back of your body.

6.  If there's one part of your body that won't lie about your age, it's your hands. Those babies show the passage of time like nobody's business. BUT, you can at least halt that progression with regular moisturisation. So if you've not shown your hands the love they deserve, now's the time to start!

7.  It's not just our hands that we tend to forget about - our poor extremities are left in the cold too! If your heels are hard and/or cracked, if your toenails are ragged and/or long, if your skin's feet are so dry they could be mistaken for that belonging to a lizard it's time to get down and get loving. Invest in a tool like Scholl's Velvet Smooth Wet & Dry Foot File and get exfoliating, then smother your tootsies in moisturiser, pop some socks on and let the goodness soak in. Before you know it you'll have fab feet!

So there you have it - seven ways to step up your beauty routine in the new year. Which will you be tackling? Or are you shining your halo and humming happily to yourself because you've got all seven covered? Is there anything else in the realm of beauty that you'll be working on improving? We'd love to hear about it, so get chatting!

I want to work on cleansing my brushes regularly as I'm so bad at doing that

22nd January, 2018

My hard cracked heels which I hide through winter and dread in summer.. I am totally taking more care of my feet this year

22nd January, 2018

I def need to do a few more of these things regularly!! I have got a good skin care regime (and it’s paying off!) but I def need to clean my brushes more regularly, look after my feet and clear out all my old make up I’m hoarding!

21st January, 2018

One heel of mine seems prone to getting a hard bit of skin it doesn't crack but just a major buildup so must pay more attention to fixing it more often. I have one of those battery file thingys that seems to work well.. I just have to remember to use it often and then moisturise the area :)

21st January, 2018

I need to go through my lippies and eye shadows, way too many and most likely a lot past their use by dates and I also need to keep reminding myself to use hand cream every day.

19th January, 2018

I’m good with skincare, ok with hands, less than ok with feet and spasmodic with exercise. I’m already on an exercise improvement regime and sorting my feet out because my heels are cracked - Gross! I want to improve my Haircare, regular cuts and colour and continue exercising. I have fitness goals. Also, improve my makeup techniques.

7th January, 2018

3 5 6 and 7 are something I should work on

4th January, 2018

Oh dear I'm guilty of not doing a few of these things. New Year New Resolutions right? Let's get it started!!!!

2nd January, 2018

Definitely need to start looking after my feet more the poor things take thousands and thousands and thousands of steps every single day at work and don't get any love

2nd January, 2018

My feet have been neglected . I don’t even have time to do them these days. I have been forgetting sunscreen as well.

1st January, 2018

I need to work on using stuff up before it expires and also before I buy more stuff! I also need to work on cleaning my make up brushes!

1st January, 2018

Erm..sun screen and tool cleaning :(

1st January, 2018

Exercise, always on my list. Getting better at applying sunscreen daily. Footcare. I am doing really well on the other things, though I am implementing a "don't buy unless you actually need it" clause for myself this year. I found buying too many products and not getting to use them before expiry dates annoying. I also figure i'll save some money too this could work..

1st January, 2018

I definitely need to do #3 and #7 more often

1st January, 2018

I've been pretty good at all of them except for number 4. I love my palettes and a good percentage of them are limited edition so I don't really want to throw them out.

I have a bit of a love/love relationship with palettes, couldnt really see myself partying with them until they are panned.

Yep especially eyeshadow palettes they're so fun and pretty to buy so we buy more and then we play with them a bit until something else catches our eye and then it expires at the back of the drawer and we don't want to throw it out because it cost

so much money. I have tried to change the greed for palettes to more face palettes because I know I have only three atm and I pan through those quicker since I have more cheek space then lid space.

Although a thicker layer of eyeshadow goes on my eyelids as opposed to my cheeks which get more of a shear wash of bronzer, blush, highlighter and setting/finishing powder.

and throwing out old stuff..I try and I try...

Macs
2nd January, 2018

Yes I need to do those things too. I cleaned my brushes yesterday so I’m feeling good about that. As for the old things that’s another story lol

SandyGedge
2nd January, 2018

Yes my brushes are long overdue

Yes, I'm feeling really overwhelmed, overloaded, and dsiempowered by the 'stuff' in my house. It mostly belongs to my ex husband (now deceased) and my kids, and I can't move on until it's all gone. So this is the year...so help me God...
