Whenever we need a new product, we're faced with the inevitable question - do you have to spend more for a good product? Can 'budget buys' ever really compete with an upmarket brand?  Our popular feature Save or Splurge is all about finding out.

Every fortnight we'll pick a product type and find two similar products from very different ends of the budget spectrum.  3 members will put both products to the test and report back!*

This week, we're putting the lazy girl's most useful product to the test - the eyeshadow pencil.  It's essentially a crayola for your eyes - there's no need for brushes, applicators or messy eyeshadow products. Simply swipe and go.

The Tale of the Tape:

In the counter corner, with a price tag of $40 , we have the Clinique Chubby Stick Shadow Tint.  It promises a sheer wash of lightweight, creamy colour that will slip on.  It's layerable and long-wearing. Versatile, too. Glide one on for a swift wash of colour. Contour with another to add depth, and yet another to highlight. There's no need to stop at just one.  Appropriate for sensitive eyes and contact lens-wearers.

And in the supermarket corner, weighing in at $12.59 , we have the Collection Cosmetics Work the Colour Eyeshadow Pencil.  It claims to be a velvety soft, blendable eyeshadow, with a waterproof formulation for long lasting colour.   It will glide on effortlessly to create versatile eye looks in an instant.

This week's SoS is open to our Heroes. But that doesn't mean you can't get involved - tell us your experiences of eyeshadow pencils - are you a fan?  In your experience do you need to pay more to get a good one?

*If you accept a spot on a Save or Splurge team you agree to:

  • Review both products individually as you would any other trial products
  • To send through a comparison paragraph detailing how the products fared against each other, ending with your final recommendation - Save or Splurge.
  • You will complete all of this in the given timeframe, lest you want to face the wrath of angry Gladys.

SAVE! Because who wants to pay more than $5 for anything other than the NYX Jumbo Eyepencil in Milk?! Works a dream! Would love to see if something else doesnt crease as much though & I do love Clinique products!

I must say its been awhile since I have used an eyeshadow stick. I used to use them all the time and then went to eye liner and a light dusting of eyeshadow as my eyes have got "older". I still have mine, and my granddaughter loves using them. Probably why I went off them was that they were too bright a colour, but I did like how easy they were applied and lasted. I'd love to give these a trial again..... but not if they are a dark colour (i.e. navy) just a nice subtle shade :)

I'm the type to save. i dont see the point in spending alot of money on somthing when you can find somthing that works the same and its cheaper.

My eyebrows and their colour/shape are VERY important to me, having very fair features and having to make them up each day. I tend to spurge in this department, especially as the product lasts all day.

I own and use one eye pencil which I adore. But not every brand or pencil is the same. Often they dont last very long. I would be super keen to try this.

I tend to just save on the drug store brands rather than go for the high end stuff just because I use them up faster.

I had a couple of shadow sticks a while ago - they had glitter in them & only got used at night. so easy to apply, I have little idea how well they lasted as no-one should ever look at themselves in nightclub mirrors & I doubt I was in much of a condition to check on their wearability when I got home either. Easy to store tho.

I actually really love eye shadow pencils! They are soooo easy to use! Although I commonly go for the cheaper ones because Im a single/working/student/mum so funds are tight, I will not hesitate to save for a product really worth the extra buck! I would love to trial these to see if more money really means more quality please :)

Would love to try , I don't recall buying them ...Im more like a shadows girl :) and eyeliner ... :)

I have never bought or tried either of the shadow sticks before but they look like they will save me a lot of to time. The clinique ones sound great as I am a contact lens wearer and I have super sensitive eyes and it will be good to see if this is true to their word. I am also interested in the collection ones because I have tried the nyx jumbo sticks before and they are great.

I've used one if these before but a long time ago and a different brand which I can't remember. I do remember however it being hard to put on pulling on my eyelid. It was creamy and it definitely did not "glide" on. I'd definitely be interested to trial these two products and give a great review on weather to splurge or save!

This takes me back to the revlon street wear double ended sticks back in 1999/2000... They were fun and easy to use but didn't stay put which makes me think maybe a quality product like Clinique would be more reliable and last longer than a cheap version.

14th July, 2015

I really don't wear eyeshadow/pencil enough to justify a splurge and who could commit to just one colour!? I'm prefer to save and get a few different ones.

13th July, 2015

I've not used an eye shadow stick but I've bought the chubby lipstick, it was great, very convenient and easy to use.

Clinique is definitely an amazing brand. Would maybe go with the higher priced product in this instance.
