I'm a simple Sally when it comes to my candle fragrance preferences. I like a vanillary, caramelly scent. Or a citrus scent. Every now and then, I might indulge in a rose scent. The wildest scent that's ever made its way into my house was the limited edition Glasshouse Melbourne candle, which featured coffee flower, which did not smell like coffee, as I naively thought it would. Now I have a very expensive deodorant-scented candle that is most definitely not my cup of tea, er, coffee, sitting on my shelf looking pretty, while not doing much else. The other day, as I stared at it with regret in my eyes, it got me wondering... What other weird candle fragrances are out there? Here's six of the strangest sounding that I could find... that I would love to burn.
Flamingo Estate - Roma Heirloom Tomato
This makes so much sense to me. There's nothing quite like the scent of a fresh tomato warmed by the sun. I've been known to pluck a couple from their vine for lunch, and then to spend some time inhaling before chopping. Herbaceous, yet zesty, and oh so fresh, this candle would have to be the top of candles I didn't know I needed, until I did.
D.S. & Durga - Concrete After Lightning
"New York City after a summer storm" - that's how this pretty is meant to smell, and I'm here for it, even though I've never been to NYC. I love the way thundering showers on a hot road, followed by sun, steam the world up and leave everything feeling a bit magical. Which reminds me... I need to see if there's a petrichor-scented candle. Because the only thing better than the smell of rain on concrete on a hot day, is rain on grass.
Gorilla Candles - Gasoline
I love the way a petrol station smells. Always have done. The best bit about being stuck in the car while mum or dad filled it, was inhaling all that lovely, poisonous if breathed in too much, fuelly air. I don't know that I'd be brave enough to buy and light this candle, but it's nice to know it exists.
Grizzly - Old-fashioned Library
I'm starting to think I have an olfactory obsession. I adore opening old books and sniffing them. I'm a book sniffer. A magazine sniffer, too. I love the smell of paper. Old libraries are my happy place. They relax me in a way a warm bath never quite does. I suspect I would burn this candle down in no time.
KFC - Gravy
There were only 230 of them available, and you had to live in the UK or Ireland to buy one, but if I could have I would have grabbed this candle. There's something magic in that KFC gravy, and I would have loved to have infused that scent into my kitchen - if only to hide the smell of burnt dinner.
Valiant - Petrichor
It exists! It's a thing! A petrichor scented candle! If it didn't cost $64 to deliver it to New Zealand, I would absolutely buy it. Alas, I'll just have to hang out for summer and hope for a storm. Or thirty.
So, do tell... What's the strangest scent you've come across? And do any of the above appeal to you?
