Talk Dirty To Me

Is it time to clean up your beauty act? Let’s talk dirty!

From mud to charcoal to tar, some of nature’s most dirty looking products are also some of the best for our body. But which should you be using and why?

When you think of coal usually the remnants of a bonfire or BBQ come to mind. It’s dusty and dirty and gets everywhere! It’s also a skin saver. Who knew!? Actually, it seems a lot of people do these days, and activated charcoal is a hot new ingredient on the beauty scene. It offers fantastic detoxifying properties and works by sucking the toxins away from the skin.

So who’s on board with activated charcoal, and how do we get our hands on it?

Bossy Cosmetics have a charcoal and clay facial bar, which along with healing butters and essential oils, is designed to draw away impurities while soothing and healing skin. If you’re a fan of masks then check out Origins Clear Improvement Mask. Activated charcoal can even be used as a teeth whitener, and Beauty Review’s Princess Zoe has managed to get her hands on Warpaint Natural Teeth Whitener (it’s in The Vault!), which is designed to whiten and polish teeth, strengthen enamel and detoxify your mouth.

Tar is another thing you wouldn’t generally associate with skincare, usually I think of it as the stuff on the road that melts when it gets too hot and sticks to my jandals. Not particularly loveable. Unless you have a skin condition, like psoriasis or eczema, because then pine tar might just be your new best friend. Heck, you’ll even want to bathe in it. Yup, Pinetarsol, the go-to for many mums when their child has chicken pox, features pine tar. Of course if you don’t want to feel like you’re swimming in the Bog of Eternal Stench, it’s also available as a gel, which can be used throughout the day to reduce inflammation and relieve itching.

There’s also another nifty little pine tar product, Grandpa’s Pine Tar Soap, a multi-purpose soap for bathing, showering, shaving, shampooing, moisturising and deodorising. Basically, if you were off tramping, this is the one product you’d want to take… especially if you don’t mind smelling a little manly. Finally, where would an article about dirty products that keep you clean be without mud, glorious mud.  And aren’t we lucky enough to live in a part of the world with an area that is revered for its mud. I’m talking about you, Rotorua! Their magical mud isn’t just great for the face, it’s great for the whole body too. Rich in minerals, including iron, calcium and zinc, it’s known for its ability to detoxify, exfoliation and repair skin. Of course if you can’t get to Rotorua to enjoy a mud bath you can still find skincare products featuring this little gem of nature, like Skinfood’s Mud Masque, or check out the Rotorua Thermal Mud range here

I have used Lush's Dirty Angels before. It was great. And of course mud packs...but I'm curious as to where you buy this Coal Tar soap from? I've only heard of Wrights Coal Tar ?

I know of Pinetarsol because of my son's excema, it absolutely stinks. The pine tar soap I wouldn't want to use because of this.

Yes. Love mud and clay and all that fun stuff. I've been using the Rotorua thermal mud mask and absolutely love it. Would be keen to try the skinfoods one. Also would love to try the bossy charcoal scrub as I've tried lush' some but it's too harsh for me

I'm a massive fan of the rotorua mud masks- they are so amazing at healing and drawing gunk out of my skin. Pinetarsol is my go to when I get hives (Which I get often), I pop it on in the shower (lotion form) leave it on for a few minutes then turn the shower back on and rinse it off- instant relief!! I'm intrigued by this bossy cosmetics charcoal product- where can I buy this in NZ?

Nice Labyrinth reference :) I have used charcoal for my animals in the past as a wound healing compound so I already was aware of some of its properties but only discovered it for myself when I bought a face scrub with it in it. Clay has become part of my regular regime but I am always on the look out for new products to try. The pine tar I have heard of but not in recent years. I love all this dirty talk :)

The charcoal sounds awesome. The tar soap sounds like something poor people used during the war!!! although I'm sure it's fab :)

I am keen to try muddy stuff, sounds amazing.

I have taken chgarcoal capsules for indigestion and they work so I would imagine this could be really good -I don't like the smell of pine tar soap however a mud bath would be fun

I LOVE the Bossy Charcoal Clay bar and use it religiously. It has save me from many a embarrassing break out and kept my skin dirt free since. I had never heard of using tar but I am definitely intrigued by it now. Might have to add it to my list of must tries. I have tried the Skinfood Mud Masque and let me just say....no thanks!!!! It stings like no tomorrow and makes my skin go red and blistered. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot barge pole.

Have never "got dirty to get clean" before but would LOVE to do it!! I'm all for natural products and if that means getting grubby or mud covered then I'm for it!!!

I am yet to use any charcoal products but was kindly given one by a lovely BR member and cant wait to try it out. It's a facial scrub :)

I definitely love my mud, clay and charcoal masques. They leave my skin so soft and smooth. I also love them in cleansers to.

Ugh, the mention of Pinetarsol does terrible things to me! Adult chicken pox is no fun. I love all these Charcoal and Mud products. Why not use everything that we have available to us... But I don't like the sound of that Pine Tar soap all the same.

I have heard that charcoal makes your teeth white, and helps with deep cleanse acne prone skin. I'm very eager to try it.
