I love the look of highlights. They can open up a face, frame it, create brightness and dimension, they can be bold and brilliant or sweet and subtle. Gorgeous! The only downside? The upkeep and cost associated with sporting a head of highlights can be painful. Which is why I'm loving the latest highlight trend: diffused highlights. So what sets diffused highlights apart from the rest, and are they for you? Read on...

What are diffused highlights?

Diffused highlights are highlights on the down-low. It's a subtle style, where your hair looks to have a lightened layer with the colour blending seamlessly into your natural tones.

What's so great about the diffused look?

Hate spending a fortune at the hairdresser topping up your 'natural' looking locks? Diffused highlights are for you. Due to their effortlessly blended look, they grow out beautifully, meaning you can go months between hair appointments.

They're also a great way to dip your toe into the highlight pond if you're unsure about how light you'd like to go or whether you'll be able to keep up with the upkeep of a more structured and high-maintenance highlight style.

How to ask for them...

If your stylist isn't aware of the diffused highlighting look, then the easiest way to ask for them is to explain that you want to go down the slightly lightened balayage route that will look natural and blend easily in with the rest of your hair.

And the result?

All in all, diffused highlights can give a fresh look to your existing hair, without all the hassle and drama of upkeep or the pain of growing out hair that looks obviously coloured, and what's not to love about that?

So, my lovelies, is the diffused highlight look a bit of you? Or do you prefer a more obvious style of highlight? Or no highlights at all? Get chatting below!

It looks nice. I have silver hair now so I only use purple products.

That actually sounds really interesting, even though I usually don't colour my hair.

Have usually gone for half or full head of foils , and never tried balayage because of my grey hair content, perhaps this is somewhat in-between, and might be an option for me to try !

I'm a huge fan of highlights and been getting them done since I was in my early 20's.My natural colour is a warm brown but I generally stick with half a head of creamy blonde highlights through my top layer. This also helps blend in any grey's when they peek through.

Definitely something I would do if I didn’t have grey roots to maintain. I’m a long way off embracing the grey but I do love a good colour pigmented conditioner to blend them in. Lucky for me my Hairdresser uses a beautiful range of organic/natural products which enable her to tailor colour conditioners for each individual client.

Sounds lovely and something I would try.
