NZ Women agree - It’s more expensive to be a woman.
You might remember taking our NZ Spending Habits survey last month, well we've had the results analysed by a stats expert, so let's find out what they revealed!
Almost 2000 NZ women voiced their opinions on make-up, their usage of it and their attitudes towards it. Here's what you had to say:
1. 27% of respondents rated make-up as being extremely important to them, with over 45% of women saying they wear make-up every day. The primary reasons women gave for wearing make up was to;
- Increase their confidence
- Make themselves look attractive
- Feel good about themselves
2. 75% of respondents have felt at least some pressure to wear make-up and/or to pay attention to the way they look. The reasons they give for feeling this pressure though, are quite varied. Some respondents commented that it was society as a whole creating these expectations, whereas others felt it was self inflicted, or generated by the media and brand advertising.
3. 46% would feel at least somewhat uncomfortable going makeup free for a week and 23% said they could never do it! Overall women 82.3% of women are more likely to go WITH makeup than without.
4. 9% of respondents reported having 'extreme loyalty' to any one brand. A sign that cosmetic brand loyalty is diminishing? Or maybe there's just to much choice?!
5. Women spend 30 minutes to apply make-up in the morning and use on average 5 different cosmetics.
6. Women spend 45 minutes getting ready in the evening and use 8 different cosmetics/
7. The one cosmetic product that most women could not live without? A foundation/tinted moisturiser is 41.3% of ladies must have product. Mascara came in second place with 29.3% of ladies saying they couldn't live without it!
8. 60.1% of you started wearing makup regularly between the ages of 13 and 16. 13.5% were 20 or older.
9. The average woman owns 13 lipsticks and 23 nail polishes.
10. And here's the bit that might have you heading to that river in Egypt - how much are we spending? Over the last 3 months here's what you said you spent;
- 14% spent $20 or less
- 29.8% spent $20 - $50
- 26.8% spent $50 - $100
- 29.4% spent over $100

The findings of this research result from a survey of 1939 New Zealand woman who are members of a beauty related website. This data provides a detailed snapshot of spending habits, attitudes and opinions of New Zealand woman towards make-up overall.
I have decided to go for quality, not quantity. I own a lot of make up but it is not all quality. I am one of those women who could not go without make up. Even on weekends I will at least have a bb cream on.
