The BR Guide To Picking A New Hairdryer

Article by BR Merilyn

So let’s get one thing straight upfront. I have thin hair but I have a lot of it, and despite the fact that it’s currently in a short crop, it would still easily take 15 minutes to blow dry. It’s just the type of hair that soaks up moisture.  It probably defies the imagination therefore, that I have hair that NEEDS to be styled!  Oh no, no flippy pony for me.. Needless to say then, that blow-drying my hair is one of my PET hates in the morning!  Which to be fair, is understandable, when you calculate that it equals 52 hours of my life every year (52 hours!)  just spent blow drying my hair!  What else could I be doing with that time? Sleeping? Relaxing? Drinking wine?

A hair dryer, or blow dryer (whatever your term for it), is something every woman will no doubt possess, and yet, I have now decided. it is probably also the one beauty accessory completely taken for granted.

You don’t have to search far for threads about hair straighteners  - there is more about “ is brand X better than brand Y?” than you can poke a stick at.  Yet, not unlike the 2nd born to the heir to the throne, the humble hair dryer appears to be relegated to the position of “I’m glad there is one and what were you saying again?”

So I can’t help but wonder, “Could the Hair Dryer  be the least appreciated beauty accessory ever?”

Case in point, I’ve had my current hair drier (a Remington) for I reckon,  close to 15 years. 15 Years!  Crikey, that’s longer than 50% of marriages last! It’s still going, it still blows out hot air, so why would I need to replace it? It still goes …right?

All of the above is true, however, in the interests of research for you dear readers I decided to go on a quest to (drum roll) replace the hair dryer!

I promptly took myself off to Farmers where I spend a good 20 minutes perusing the shelves –  frankly, leaving 20 minutes later none the wiser.  Oh there was plenty to choose from don’t get me wrong, but, what did I want? What did I need?  What were the most important elements for my new friend to have?

Did I want speed? Heat? Silence? Ionic technology to smooth my hair? Multiple heat settings? Multiple speed settings?  Crikey? Frankly, yes, yes, yes and yes, all of the above sound good, but, surely one hairdryer can't serve them all? And, would I end up with a model that does everything just averagely, as opposed to doing one thing well?

Hmmmm more research required. So, after extensive research I determined that  for me the three critical things were:

- Airflow.  I want to be able to dry my hair FAST!
- Quiet is good  I am often up before the rest of the house.
- Budget. Well I had in my head $100 – and lets face it, if the next one lasts 15 years, well it’ll be money well spent.

Given  that criteria,  I then consider what about the brand? Does it matter to me that my blowdryer is endorsed by Hermen McWatsit? Hairdresser to the stars?

And the answer…is an emphatic NO!  So, Ultimately my thought process went like this;

My last hair dryer (a Remington) lasted 15 years..
That’s pretty good
Here’s a new model that claims to be quiet. And fast
That sounds like me. Well…,not actually like me… but you get the gist.

So there you have it. My new Remington Euro 8000.  And wouldn’t you know it? Technology has come along way in 15 years! My new Remington Euro 8000 not only looks good, but dries my hair in 5 MINUTES! Saving me a massive 10 minutes every time I dry my hair – I love it!

It was retailing for a lofty $149.95 BUT, like most retailers Farmers have hot specials almost every week. I  picked it up for $79.95 so $20 under my budget.

So there you have it. My guidelines on what to look for in a hair dryer. Ultimately you need to think about what’s important to you and then go from there. My one advice would be though.. don’t take your hair dryer for granted!

I also have a remington hair dryer and straightener, they just seem to last forever! The feature(s) I most like about the Remington Euro 8000 is the ultra silent technology, I have a teeny unit and I hate blowdrying my hair at night incase I wake up the people living above me! Also LOVE the fact it has a five year warranty! Five years is a crazy long time!!

Definitely love the cool shot feature...I am currently using my trusty Wahl hairdryer that doesn't have one (and i suppose it would make sense to also mention I am a hairdresser). Cool shot is great as it helps set whatever it is you are blow drying into the hair. Be it volume, tucking under a bob or blow waving in beautiful curls the cool shot mode cools the hair quickly to set it in place. My Wahl doesn't have this feature so I have to flick switches from hot to cold. The long nozzle gives enough room to hold the section of hair on it when alternating with a brush so I wouldn't have to fidget around with that either. This would be a perfect addition to my hairdressing kit and make a lot of my jobs a lot easier. Would be keen to use it to dry my mop as well haha.

Ultra silent technology AND the Removable filter <3

I love that it's quiet.... While my toddler is sleeping is just about my only opportunity to do my hair nicely!

Oh wow...this hair dryer sounds AH-MAZING! Being a blonde my hair is very porous - which means takes AGES to dry! I love the sound of the 2300 watts - my current dryer definitely needs a update but it is a trusty Remington which I have had for 7+ years!

Like most - the silence is what suits me; aswell as the chic design - its looks so nice! Not because I get up any earlier than my household; but I normally have music going while I get ready - annnd there's nothing worse than a loud hair dryer first thing in the morning :/. My current hair dryer is also a Remington - it's good, but it's a "cheapie" so is loud and takes a wee while to dry - does the trick; just requires patience haha!

I love the colour..red is my fav wow it sounds like a god send my dryer is over 20 years old lol this would be so cool

6th November, 2014

Wow - definitely love the colour. Bright red with a slim handle to easily hold while drying hair.

Also the Ultra silent technology would be handy to have when drying daughter's hair as she sits still when watching TV & complains with my older (over 30yrs) hairdryer. Very handy.

Bet this hairdryer lasts as long!

I own a cheap $20 hair dryer and to be honest it puts me off drying my hair. I have been meaning to upgrade but I never have gotten around to it. The Remington Euro 8000 looks snazzy, I like how it is ultra silent (so I wont scare my cat hehe) and it has 6 switch combinations 3 heat & 2 speed.

6th November, 2014

My old hairdrier died two weeks ago and I decided I'd wait till next year to get a new one, as we are a one income family so I can be home with my daughter. So If I could win this awesome new one, I've love to!! Its red and sounds like it will save me time in my day by drying my hair faster, what is not to love about the Remington Euro 8000!!

6th November, 2014

I LOVE that it's quiet, my daughter gets scared of my cheap noisy one! And the five year warranty is BRILLIANT!! Things just don't last long these days so that makes it very worthwhile =)

5th November, 2014

Ions & silent, I can't decide which I like more!

5th November, 2014

Ohhhhh wowww!!! I need a ultra silent hair dryer!!! With two little toddlers normally asleep by the time in get to have a shower my blow dryer is far to loud to use and as much as I'd love to blow dry my hair I wouldnt dare wake two sleeping baby's! :)

5th November, 2014

I love how powerful it sounds and that it drys your hair five minutes

5th November, 2014
