The Colour of 2016

Towards the end of each year we wait with bated breath for Pantone’s Colour of the Year announcement. What will it be? Why will they have chosen it? Will we like it? This year they’ve surprised us by choosing not one but two colours.

The first is Rose Quartz, a gentle soft pink.

The other is named Serenity and it’s a tranquil blue. So how did this come about? You can read the full reasoning on Pantone’s website, but in a nutshell they felt that by melding of the warmth of the pink and the coolness of the blue they were fulfilling society’s need for reassurance, wellness, peace, order and connection. They also felt by choosing two colours that wouldn’t usually go together they were showcasing the change we’re seeing in regards to the blurring of genders in fashion.

The reason behind the colour choice is a pretty fascinating read, especially in relation to the fluidity and equality of genders. When applied to the world of makeup it’s something we are seeing more and more often, with men embracing cosmetics, while women are applying traditionally male colours. The boundaries are disappearing and it’s a beautiful thing.

Now if I were to be honest, and this is only my opinion and the rest of the world is free to disagree, I probably wouldn’t make this year’s Pantone colours part of my décor and they most likely wouldn’t make an appearance in my wardrobe either. However, I think it’s a perfect makeup match and whether you’re blending the two or just working with one of the colours you can create some stunning looks. With that in mind I went searching to find products that reflect Pantone’s Colour of the Year.

L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Forever Pink is a divine way to add the colour of the year into your look. Wash it all over your lid, sweep it underneath the lower lash line, pop it in the corner of your eyes – it’s up to you what you do with it but you can be sure it’ll create a gorgeous look.

Want to experiment with the Pantone colours as well as some others? Check out Chi Chi’s Pretty Palette! This fabulous palette gives you so many options to embrace this year’s colours while mixing them up with different shades.

Essie Bikini So Teeny nail polish was well loved when Beauty Review members trialled it. It’s such a close match to Serenity and a perfect colour for summer too!

Not afraid of adding an interesting hue to your lips? Then NYX Macaron Lippies in Earl Grey is another Serenity-esque colour that’s sure to turn heads.

But if you’re girly through and through and like to keep things natural then Cover Girl Continuous Colour in Rose Quartz is for you!

Pick up Lush’s bestselling bath bomb, Twilight, and you can even bathe in the colours of the year!

Wait, there’s more. Pantone has teamed up with Sephora to create a range based on the colours, check them out here

What an interesting article, I have never heard of this. I do love the pink, I have been using pinky shades lately and I have seen some gorgeous pink clothes about as well.

I really like these colours. I think their great colours for the summer season. I've been wanting that colour from essie for so long now. I just havent been able to find it locally. Im going away from pinky lips. Im going into darker tones and nudes. I would like to try a blue lip out.

I happen to like both colours and funnily enough happened to be wearing a rose quartz type shade of lipstick and an eyeliner similar to the serenity shade today. They're colours I'd wear together in make up like that or individually in clothing. But I'm more of a bold colours girl, although these are both nice enough colours. I will have to check out their website and Sephora range now.
