Don’t you love a good bun? They can take your hair from bad to fab, from easy going to elegant, from frumpy to fun, all with a simple swish and a twirl of your locks. The humble bun has been my go to style for two decades. The messy bun was my thing during high school, during the late nineties and early to mid naughties I was a huge fan of the double bun, and in recent years the top knot has been my favourite way to do my hair - up until recently when I cut it short in an attempt to break my bun habit after reading doing your hair the same way everyday can cause baldness. Unfortunately after doing this I’ve read that the double bun is back in a big way. My favourite! Gah. Typical.
Anyway, the return of this bun trend, previously rocked by such people as Gwen Stefani, Bjork and various Spice Girls has inspired us to go through and find some fab bun looks to inspire you, and to torture me as I wait for my hair to grow back. Enjoy!
I wish I’d had a Zoella around back in the days when I was in high school, she’d have probably ensured my top knot was a little more pulled together as opposed to looking like I’d popped my hair up and then dragged myself backwards through a hedge… Still, it’s such a great way to do your hair when you want it out of your face, when you want it to look good, and when you want to look like you haven’t tried too hard.
The ballerina bun is the top knots more pulled together friend. It’s sleek, it’s tidy, it’s effortless. And it’s a little shy, as unlike the top knot that says ‘oh hey, look at me, just hanging out all bouncy on the peak of the head’, the top of a ballerina bun should be created at the crown of your head so that the top just peeks over your head. (But, as always, that’s just what the great ‘they’ say, you do you!)
The low bun is a thing of many faces. It can be filled with curls. Plaits can be weaved through it. It can have hair jewellery added to enhance it. But our favourite look is the simplest. A tidy low bun, which can take you to work, and then with a slick of red lippy and some black heels can take you out onto the town in style.
We like to think of the side bun as the low bun’s more frivolous cousin. Like the low bun it can be simple or styled, yet with its jaunty to-the-sideness happening it says ‘oh hey, I’m up for a good time, let’s play!’
And finally, my favourite, the double bun, as sported by none other than the divine Cara Delevinge. One day my pretty we will meet again. One day.
So do tell, are you big on buns? What style is your favourite? Feel free to share your bun game on the Photo Wall – we’d love to see it! And if you’re after some bun inspo, check out the collection of bun tutorials we’ve put together. (http://www.beautyreview.co.nz/videos/have-fun-with-buns
I only have enough hair for double buns. But patients might not think it's professional..
