The Insiders Guide To Eyelash Extensions

Article by BR Natalie

We recently sent one of our Superheroes to an eyelash bar to experience eyelash extensions - and the results were so outstanding we knew we had to find out more!

Eyelash extensions have become a staple salon treatment, with people paying around $250 for fibre extensions. You can choose to have eyelash extensions as a one off for a special event or have regular infills.

What are eyelash extensions?

Most commonly eyelash extensions are made of silk, rayon or even mink.  The strands can be anywhere from 6mm to 17mm long, depending on how dramatic a look you want.

They are light weight and can be incredibly natural looking, so get all those fears of looking like a drag queen out of your head!

Each strand is individually applied to the lash line, using a specially formulated adhesive.

Why do I need them?

Eyelash extensions add depth, volume and length to the upper lashline and are great for people with fine, short or few lashes.

They're also really great for gals that don't like to apply mascara or curl their eyelashes everyday, as well as those who don't like having their lashes permed or tinted.

Can you just have them done once?

Yes! You can choose to have lash extensions for a one off special event, or as a regular treatment - much like acryllic nails!

How long do they last?

Eyelash extensions grow out with your natural lash cycle, which can be anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months.  But because your lashes aren't on an even cycle, that is, strands are often at different stages of the growth cycle, you can expect to have the refilled every 4-5 weeks.

How expensive are they?

Depending on the amount of individual lashes and the type of lashes you choose, you can expect an average of around $100 - $150 for a 'better than your natural' look.

Any tips?

  • Keep your new lashes away from water for 24 hours.
  • Avoid pulling your lashes out, even if you sense they're loose - you could also pull out your natural lashes.
  • Only use mascara if you have to - and if you simply must, use it on the ends of the lashes to avoid a very clumpy lash line.
  • Check with your technician, but commonly if glue for sensitive skin is used, you'll need to avoid oil-based cleansers and makeup removers.
  • Ensure your technician is lash certified - ask around and find a salon with a great reputation!

I really, really do not want them tbh. So expensive and so bad for your lashes in the long run.

I've never had my lashes done because I'm a lash puller but I love the look.

Sounds exciting but a bit expensive for my taste. Not sure I could justify the expense even for a one off occasion.

I've never had eyelash extensions, I would love to try them. But I'm scared, I touch my lashes so often I just don't know how they would hold up on me, but if I wasn't having to apply mascara it could be awesome :D

Eeek I've never even worn false eyelashes lol.

I wear extensions permanently and am so inlove with them, they shorten my beauty routine and give and awesome flare to my eyes. I also am trained in applying them and honestly, I just won't charge that much, it's not affordable for many people. I also have personal experience of technicians that charge much less and do a MUCH better job than the salons do (mainly because the girls at the salon have to do many other beauty treatments, where girls that specialize in extensions tend to have much more training).

A while ago I went to a salon to have the eyelash extensions put on and opted for the slightly more expensive option as I believed they would look more natural. Firstly it does take time and took close to an hour to apply . I found the application very uncomfortable and after the first 15 or 20 minutes literally could not wait for the therapist to finish. The results did look lovely, they definitely gave the appearance of my lashes being far thicker and a little bit longer, and although they did not look completely natural they certainly did not look like 'false eyelashes'. What I did not expect was the discomfort at night. I lie on my side to sleep and the pillow appeared to "push" the eyelashes into the eyelid and wake me up literally two or three times a night. This caused a sensitivity around my eyes. For this reason, and probably this reason alone, I would not have them applied again. The cost was probably in the region of about $140.00 at the time and they lasted about four weeks before they started falling off and I had to pull the others off as it did look odd with 'gaps'. I tried removing them with oil and cleanser but when you want them to come off they are difficult to remove and as I said I resorted to pulling them off. This probably did my own lashes no good as I am sure I pulled heaps of them off too. I would recommend you seriously think twice before having them applied.

A tip I can share is brush you eyelashes! If I don't do it in the morning and at night they start spiking out in all directions and brushing them keeps them stay in place, I have converted into an eyelash junkie thanks to beauty review :)

Unfortunately this is far out of my budget but I would get them if I could, I think done right they look stunning and best of all, so natural. Maybe sometime in the future!

I've heard they ruin your natural lashes, is this true??

Seems very pricey, I will stick with mascara.

I am lucky to have naturally long thick lashes but I'd like to get a couple extra lashes put in the outer corners though as mine seem to be short there.

29th December, 2014

Wooah lol I definately wont be spending that much.

29th December, 2014

I've seen both amazing eyelash extensions and some ones that weren't so great. Personally I get my eyelashes tinted on a regular basis and don't see the need for eyelash extensions. If I wanted them for a special occassion I would just use fake lashes (not that i've tried them before).

Love the mystery shoppers lash extentions, I have had a few shocking cases on myself though :( had my eyes glowed shut and had glow used on me that stung my eyes so bad! But then I found a place in chch (zippity doo) that do an amazing job.

29th December, 2014

I have a friend who does extensions and she has offered to do mine but because i pull on my lashes she advised against it. I really don't like things out of place around my eyes so even a mildly loose lash annoys me. I do love the result I have seen though (trying to see how long I can go without touching my lashes).

They sound amazing! It would have to be a pretty special one off event to get them done once though!

If they're applied by a trained beautician they won't ruin your eyelashes, your natural eyelashes fall out every few days and a trained beautician will glue one eyelash per real eyelash and doing this doesn't ruin your eyelashes :)
