The latest dental trend from Japan...

This latest trend from Japan may be a blessing in disguise for those of us with not so perfect teeth. Its official name is Tsuke-Yaeba, which is roughly translated to ‘canine teeth’ and involves gluing fake teeth over the top of a patients regular teeth all to give them an appearance of crooked teeth.

While most of us are paying money to get our teeth straightened, Japanese are paying $300 (US) to get this crooked look. In fact demand is so high that dental clinics are getting ‘creative’ with their marketing to promote their clinics and drum up business. One clinic called Pure Cure has created a girl pop band named TYB48 who all sport, can you guess it, crooked teeth. They released their first song last year titled “Mind if I bite?” – what more can be said really?

If you’re struggling to understand why it’s so popular well apparently the men of Japan find the imperfection of crooked teeth to be attractive, likening it to a ‘childlike’ quality and making women more approachable. It’s an interesting thought to ponder on really; does striving for beauty perfection make us more unapproachable for men?

Terrible! Nobody likes the look of a snaggle tooth, whats next.....screwing bolts into the sides of your head to look like frankenstein?

Great, I have really messed up teeth so this works well for me! Seriously though, what is it with teeth trends? A while back, the whole gap tooth thing was 'trendy' (thanks to Lara Stone; Georgia May Jagger; Ashley Smith; Lindsey Wixon, etc).

As for the child like qualities, supposedly this is linked to an evolutionary idea. This is where males prefer females that appear younger (and therefore, more fertile). Reproduction potential is considered important in a partner according to this theory

I'm all about embracing and loving your imperfections, I think it's great to be happy with who you are...but manufacturing imperfections is a little odd! Especially if it's for the purposes of attracting men! I do think there are distinct cultural differences at play here. I doubt NZ men want women to be less 'perfect' so I don't think this will catch on. I think there is some truth in the fact that some men are intimidated by beauty, but if someone really wanted to get to know you, wouldn't they put that aside and approach you anyway....?

Trends come and go don't they. Let's hope this is over sooner rather than later.

The top pic on the right hand the teeth look normal all the rest of the pictures their teeth don't. It look weird that they would pay money to look like that.

It's not really new, I've seen videos and pictures about it 6 months ago. I have found it very stupid that time and I still find it really really stupid. What's happening lately in people's heads?
