Some trends we can see coming from a mile off. 'I think the time for glossy, juicy lips is over - bring on the rich, berry lipsticks just in time for Autumn.' They're seasonal trends, they come, they go. Others... 'Oooooh, skin's been very matte of late, it's time for dewy to be back in style'... are a result of our fickleness. The pendulum swings one way, eventually it'll swing the other. But this trend? The Bratz Doll Challenge? We didn't see this becoming a thing. Not even remotely.
It first came to our attention when NikkieTutorials uploaded a video to YouTube. Then we saw James Charles jump on board. By then it officially felt like a thing, a moment.
While Nikkie mentioned Promise Phan's Bratz doll video from late October 2017 as the person who first went all Bratz-y, the trend goes back even further than that to Instagrammer Matte, aka missgaymatte, who has been creating Bratz-esque looks since 2017 (and posting before Promise Phan). But somehow, someone, somewhere brought it back in 2019 and the makeup lovers of the internet are here for it.
Check out these amazing looks...
The artistry is beyond anything we BR gals can do. We can but sit back, scroll, stare and admire.
Sure, it may not be around for more than a few weeks but if you're looking to dress up as a Bratz doll for a fancy dress party of Halloween this year, next year or ten years from now, at least you know there'll be no end of YouTube tutorials and Instagram inspiration to show you how to get the look!
Wow! Some get close to looking very similar.
