The Most Dangerous Beauty Product Ever?

The other day I stuck my mascara wand in my eye. It hurt. Quite a lot. And of course the resulting eye watering ruined my left eye’s look as well as the foundation base beneath it. Makeup and its tools can be a dangerous object in the wrong hands. The amount of times I’ve caught the skin of my eyelid in my eyelash curlers? Enough to make me not use them anymore because the pain is real. As for hair tongs? Yeah, nah. I own them but the amount of owwies that have resulted from attempts to curl the unruly locks has resulted in them being tucked away to become a dust catcher. But what is one of the most dangerous beauty items of all? One that won’t just ruin your makeup or cause a bit of grief in your eye, it’ll potentially turn your life to ashes?

Did your first thought drift to hair straighteners and curling irons that have been left on? They’re certainly dangerous (and please, always double check that your styling tools are turned off, unplugged and on a non-burnable surface before you head out), however they’re not the most recent culprits of some potentially deadly situations. We’re talking about the humble desktop makeup mirror.

Recently one woman’s experience hit the news. When makeup lover, Kasey Ault, came home from work she smelt smoke. She set out to find where the smoke was coming from and what she found was a burnt iPad case among a few other charred products. After checking all possible sources she put the fire down to the sun hitting her magnified makeup mirror.

This isn’t the only reported incident of a makeup mirror going all Firestarter, earlyin 2015 the Daily Mail reported an incident where the mix of a makeup mirror and winter sun looked to be the cause of a fire that gutted a multi-million dollar home.

So how can you reduce the changes of this happening to you? Quite simply, keep your makeup mirror (or shaving mirror for that matter if you happen to have one) in a sunless spot after you’ve used it. After all, the quest for makeup application perfection is admirable but it’s hardly worth burning your whole makeup collection for.

Do tell… do you own a makeup mirror? Have you ever had a close call with one? Will you be careful about how you store it from now on? Have any other makeup tools caused you grief or damage? Share away…

I have had a mirror but it was a wall one. The one on my dressers are big but not magnified. I have thought of investing in a magnified one for close up but maybe not so much anymore.

I though blow dryer as it is easy to use and pop in the drawer after when it is still hot but this is really good to know although I haven't got one and now I don't think I would bother as too easy to leave in the wrong place if you are in a hurry.

I have a old hand mirror on my dresser and is alway mirror side down because of what could happen if sun can get onto it. Yes I did know that this can happen.

Mine sits facing my bedroom window. I think I'll shift it!

Wow thats an eye opener. I haven't ever wanted one of those mirrors before. I normally just grab the closest mirror to me lol plus the one on my desk.

I have a makeup mirror and I leave it on my desk which has the sun hitting it during the day so now I'll be moving it just like how I moved my makeup because of the sun and heat. No wonder my landlords had the makeup mirror like mine in the ensuite

I have a double-sided mirror that stands on my chest of drawers (where I do my make-up). I've always been conscious of this happening, so I store it in the far corner, against the corner of the wall where I know the sun won't get it. I also angle mine after putting it away, so that its pointed in such a way that if sun did miraculously reach around the wall and get it, it won't reflect light. This also stops it from reflecting anything when the lights are turned on at night. Call me paranoid!

OMG...I just bought my makeup mirror 2 weeks ago. Its on a stand and double sided. Might have to tuck it away now...and it was in my fave color...rose gold :-(

Wow, I would never have thought of This! I do have a magnifying mirror but I don't really use it so it is safely tuned out of the Suns glare.

Good article and with all the comments shows it is really important to think about.

By all means display it (it sounds beautiful!) but just to be on the safe side make sure it's out of the sun's reach :) x

I thought the most dangerous would be blow drying your hair in the bath or plucking your eye brows in the dark.
