The Most Dangerous Beauty Product Ever?

By BR Kellie

The other day I stuck my mascara wand in my eye. It hurt. Quite a lot. And of course the resulting eye watering ruined my left eye’s look as well as the foundation base beneath it. Makeup and its tools can be a dangerous object in the wrong hands. The amount of times I’ve caught the skin of my eyelid in my eyelash curlers? Enough to make me not use them anymore because the pain is real. As for hair tongs? Yeah, nah. I own them but the amount of owwies that have resulted from attempts to curl the unruly locks has resulted in them being tucked away to become a dust catcher. But what is one of the most dangerous beauty items of all? One that won’t just ruin your makeup or cause a bit of grief in your eye, it’ll potentially turn your life to ashes?

Did your first thought drift to hair straighteners and curling irons that have been left on? They’re certainly dangerous (and please, always double check that your styling tools are turned off, unplugged and on a non-burnable surface before you head out), however they’re not the most recent culprits of some potentially deadly situations. We’re talking about the humble desktop makeup mirror.

Recently one woman’s experience hit the news. When makeup lover, Kasey Ault, came home from work she smelt smoke. She set out to find where the smoke was coming from and what she found was a burnt iPad case among a few other charred products. After checking all possible sources she put the fire down to the sun hitting her magnified makeup mirror.

This isn’t the only reported incident of a makeup mirror going all Firestarter, earlyin 2015 the Daily Mail reported an incident where the mix of a makeup mirror and winter sun looked to be the cause of a fire that gutted a multi-million dollar home.

So how can you reduce the changes of this happening to you? Quite simply, keep your makeup mirror (or shaving mirror for that matter if you happen to have one) in a sunless spot after you’ve used it. After all, the quest for makeup application perfection is admirable but it’s hardly worth burning your whole makeup collection for.

Do tell… do you own a makeup mirror? Have you ever had a close call with one? Will you be careful about how you store it from now on? Have any other makeup tools caused you grief or damage? Share away…

Good article Kellie, it's things like this we never think of :)

Wow - I now have a dark cover that I slide on to my mirror. Never had a close call but it could have so easily happened. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Scary to think really isn't it?! Here I was thinking it would be a curling iron or straightener :/

Definitely guilty of applying mascara to my eyeball at least once every few months! And the old forehead burn from straighteners!

never happen any kind of incidents mention it above. i do have magnifying mirror but after use i always put in the drawer as safe side. i'll make sure my other makeup tool put on proper place.

I don't own a makeup mirror for the sheer fact that I don't want to see my skin magnified haha. In saying that my eyes are getting a little crappy with age and I had an eye test recently, no prescription required but I do need readers. So I may have to get a makeup mirror hehe :)

I have a double-sided make-up mirror which is safely tucked away in the bathroom cabinet when not in use. I know of one person who had a house fire through the sun shining on a shaving mirror in the bathroom, so it's true, this can be a real risk. I have also heard of fires being started in cars through water bottles being left so the sun shines on them and reflects on upholstery and it starts smoldering.

I have a magnifying make up mirror, but it is in my bathroom and the sun dosent reach there, phew!

Oh my gosh yes! This has happened to me, was lying in my room and did a double take as I looked over at my draw and saw smoke?! Ran over and the magnifying mirror I had on my desk was burning/melting a tube of mascara! All I could think was, thank god I was home and thank god there wasn't paper or something super flammable lying there instead

Wow! It's so obvious when it's pointed out...but who would have realised how dangerous they could be! Thanks for the safety tip.

23rd January, 2016

That definitely opens your eyes to potential fire hazards, thankfully I don't own one.

23rd January, 2016

I hadn't thought of that. I immediately thought of hair straighteners.

I'm so glad for stories like this - I saw something on Facebook last year about that fire - it made me always store my makeup mirror in my makeup case or face down. Scary stuff!

I guess if we were one of those horrid kids that burnt ants with a magnifying glass we would be aware of this already! Years ago a flat mate left her hair straightener on the tv (pre flat screens) and it melted the top a bit. Another time I was trying to dry the carpet after a coffee spill with the hairdryer and it melted the synthetic carpet!

Wow interesting! I will make sure I turn my makeup mirror down so that it doesn't reflect like that! Scary!
