The Primer You Need Right Now

Oh primer, what would we do without you? Actually for a long time there a fair few of us did seem to do without you but in recent years you’ve exploded over our beauty shelves showing us the error of our ways. Beauty Review has been loud and proud in our view of ‘it’s a crime not to prime’ but we also think it’s a crime not to prime with a primer to suit your needs. So what kind of primers are out there and why might you need them? Read on…

The primer to first catch our eye was Benefit’s Porefessional, a primer designed to fill pores. Pore filling primers minimise the look of pores and fine lines while creating a smooth base on which to apply your foundation. Many contain silicone, which while wonderful for creating a beautiful base may not be best for those who are prone to breakouts as it can be clogging to the pores.

Speaking of breakouts, if you suffer from spots why not put your primer to work while it helps your foundation? Look for a product that contains salicylic acid, like Smashbox’s Photo Finish More Than Primer Blemish Control, as salicylic acid works to prevent pores clogging whilst helping heal your skin.

If you love looking radiant than an illuminating primer will be right up your alley. Illuminating primers often contain light-reflecting and/or skin restoring ingredients that work to give your skin a luminous glow. The most famous example would probably be Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, which even gets the royal seal of approval from our very own Queenie!

If too much illumination is your problem, in other words your skin is on the oily side, a mattifying primer may well be your must-have. Mattifying primers work to keep oil at bay so your face doesn’t slip off half way through the day. Our pick? We hit up the Beauty Review primer section to see what our oily-skinned beauties thought and Youngblood Mineral Primer got the big tick, meanwhile the interweb sees many raving about Too Faced Primed and Poreless.

Skin dull? Is redness an issue? Pick up a colour correcting primer. Colour correcting primers can reduce the look of redness, brighten up dull looking skin, even help hide things like age spots and those bruised-looking under-eye patches you get when you’ve had a rough nights sleep. The NYX Studio Perfect Photo-Loving Primer range features specific primers to work with your concerns or if you’ve a whole bundle of concerns Stila’s One Step Correct may just be the ticket.

So have you got your primer down pat? Are you yet to find one that works right for you? Any recommendations to share? Get chatting!

I have never used a primer, but need to find a good one, as I have noticeable pores on my face which I want to diminish.

I'm still on the hunt for one that works for me. I've just finished a deluxe sample of Porefessional - I actually don't think much of it to be honest (it really pains me to admit that). I tried Bossy Cosmetics Prime & Fix this morning & while it's actually a fantastic Primer (yet to find out about the Fix part as the face has only been on for 3 hours) it did give me a burning feel after putting it on, so I'm picking I'll be waking up with may pimples tomorrow... I have tried quite a few from other brands, claiming to do all sorts of different things but I am yet to find the one that makes me go "wow!"

I picked up Make Up Forever Smoothing Primer while I was away. It's nice and light and helps blur the piting I have. Doesn't seem to make my face extra oily after a few hours and seems to stay light and fresh (you know that awful feeling that you have something on your face that you really want to wash off? this doesn't do that). Would I buy it again? Probably not.

OMG I have only just started using my first one and this is so overwhelming- I have a lot to learn

27th November, 2015

I am new to primer. I just started using primer recently. I used to use moisturiser as a primer before my foundation. I currently sample Dermalogica Hydrablur Primer. It's so good so far :) I really want to try the Benefit’s Porefessional ( a bit pricey)

Stila’s One Step Correct is amazing! Some days I just wear that with a bit of mascara. It covers my redness so well and is the perfect coverage.

26th November, 2015

No, I don't use primer. Did I just swear lol I haven't been using one. I normally just put my normal moisturiser. Is it really worth buying a primer..lol

26th November, 2015

I'm not wonderful with primer. I think an illuminating primer would be a good one for me to buy.

26th November, 2015

I used to be a massive skeptic of primers, I'm still not entirely sold on the fact that they're a necessity lol...but I do use them currently! I go through phases, sometimes my skin just refuses to cooperate with them. I've also found that the super silicone ones, like the Porefessional and Smashbox primers, really don't work with my skin and/or foundation choices.

My current faves are the L'Oreal Lumi Magique for a dewy, glowy look (which I go for, pretty much daily). Mine's nearly finished though, pretty sure tomorrow will be the last pump out of it (yay, empties!) so I'm one step closer to being able to get my hands on the Mecca one. Also loving the Hourglass Mineral Veil for mattifying my sometimes-oily cheeks!

I find that NYX Shine Killer works well for my oily skin. I also like Innoxa's Pure Silk Skin Primer.

Ohhh the illuminating primer has my name all over it - now to find one that suits my oily sensitive skin - ahhh the joys! I currently use Benefit Porefessional - it does a good job but not sure if I want to continue to splurge on it.

How do you read my mind BR! I'm actually in the market for a new primer at the moment. Love Porefessional, Smashbox, and Flash Balm... might look into the Stila one next (if I don't just repurchase Porefessional, I just can't get over the price)

Ohhh Kirsty you've tried the Flash Balm? Is it a lovely illuminating primer? I totally understand what you mean about the Porefessional price tag - eeeek!

I loved it! My skin really liked it as well. I got it in a GWP but I do think I would repurchase. Didn't find it that illuminating, more colour correcting because it is orange in tone so brightening in that way.

I got the Mecca lit from within illuminating primer- it's really nice, gives a nice glowy look, I also have the flash balm in the cupboard to try when the other runs out...always prepared!

Hahaha I like that you're always prepared! I love the Mecca one, smells amazing and gives a lovely glow for sure - finished it last month so I'm feeling like I should try something new?

Ooo I've heard a lot about that Mecca one, Ringy! I'm hoping to try it after I'm done with my current ones. Koni, I'd recommend looking in that direction for illumination, I found the Beauty Flash Balm more moisturising than anything else.

Doh, we wrote our replies at the same time! Baha. Nevermind :P The only recommendation I have is the L'Oreal Lumi Magique primer, but I don't imagine it's that great for you more oily skinned beauties. Excited to see what you find! Tehe

Aw thanks for the feedback on Flash Balm Sarah *crossed off list* :-) I'll try Lumi again - the first time I sampled it at Farmers it was a little to stark on this chocolate skin but maybe because I was little too excessive hehe.

Aw you're probably right, Koni, I think I've seen a few people say it looks "silvery" on their complexion, so may not be the best recommendation after all. What about the Becca Back Lighting primer? That looks right up your alley! :)

Koni
27th November, 2015

That's actually on my list but haven't seen any convincing reviews. Your swatching episode at Mecca reminds me that I should go in and sample it :-)

Wooohooo today is the day - another beauty product panned!! Dewy and glowy? Hmmm I really do need to revisit this Lumi primer.

They make your skin feel sooo smooth, prettyclotheshorse. Then you go in with your foundation and it's game over! Haha

No you didn't swear lol you just gave us the evils LOL. I guess if you find the primer that works for you then it'll be worth it. I haven't found the best primer for me but I can't NOT put any on my face, it just doesn't feel right haha.

Sounds like I need to try a primer Koni. You've convinced me lol

I tried the Stilla one also and really LOVED the effect it gave me. Alas it also gave me the shinies after a few hours so is now in my drawer to look at but not use :(.

I don't think it's too silicone-y, it just leaves my skin feeling nice and smooth! I find later in the day if it's s bit shiny I just pop a teeny bit of powder over the top which does the trick for me!

My Bossy prime and fix did that too, but after I put on foundation it stopped. I have given it away now but still. Primers shouldn't burn!

I'm curious to know what ingredient has caused it. It stopped once I put the Foundation on too. I sprayed over top also & it didn't burn then. But yeah.. nothing should sting or burn! It's actually a great product though! My face has stayed on!

I've tried the Rimmel stay Matte & I didn't like it, it made my foundation go weird & blotchy. I want to try the NYX Angel Veil though... Hoping to get to the NYX counter next week whilst in Auckland....
