There are few things I fear more than going to the dentist. Dealing with Auckland traffic on a busy day? Easy peasy. Calling out bad behaviour? No worries. Sending food back when something's wrong. I barely blink an eye. But booking in that dentist check-up? Let's just say due to traumatic childhood experiences involving a mouthful of fillings given without anaesthetic of any kind, it strikes terror into my beauty editor heart.

However, due to my fear of the dentist, and the potential of one getting their drill on, I'm particularly careful about my oral health regime, and being so makes my trips to the dentist less teeth gnashingly terrifying, because I know when I sit in that chair I'm doing so having minimised the chance of any issues. So what are the best ways to keep our teeth in tip top condition? Check these out...

Brush twice a day... for two minutes.

If you only do one thing then brushing twice a day for two minutes, being careful to cover every available surface (that's inside, outside and on the chewing areas) of your teeth should be it. This will help keep the bacteria - which helps create plaque, which then can contribute to gum disease and tooth decay - at bay.

You'll also want to keep your toothbrush in good condition. Changing it every three months or when it's showing signs of wear.

At this point it'd be remiss of me not to point you in the direction of our latest trial. The Oral-B iO Series 9 Electric Toothbrush rated an overall whopping 5/5. This is only the second time in Beauty Review history that a Top Rated product has achieved a 5/5 overall rating. It's seriously that good. So what sets it apart from your usual toothbrush? First of all there's the app that you connect to that gauges and shows you where you're brushing, ensuring you cover every part of your teeth evenly and accurately. Then there's the Smart Pressure Sensor that lets you know if you're brushing too hard (something my dentist tells me I do). And, to take it to the next level, there are seven modes to choose from, including sensitive, gum care, tongue, intense clean and daily clean, to help you ensure you're getting the best clean for your needs. Reviewer comments were absolute raves:

"My teeth have never felt cleaner and I haven’t experienced “fuzzy” feeling teeth since using this brush." - Ashiley

"I am noticing a difference and seeing whiter, shinier teeth already!" - Gem83

"After the first brush it felt like I’d been to the hygienist." - BusyMum

I don't know about you, but with raves like that I know what I'll be putting my Christmas gift money towards! So what else can we be doing to improve our overall oral health?

Don't rinse with water post-brushing.

While it's tempting to give your mouth a good swill with water after brushing, it's best to avoid doing so if you're using a toothpaste that contains fluoride (which is recommended by the Ministry of Health). That's because rinsing will dilute the fluoride that is included in toothpaste as it works to prevent tooth decay, and therefore reduce its ability to do so. What should you do? Simply spit out your excess toothpaste then go about your business.

Mouthwash?

Been buying mouthwash thinking it's the thing to do? Think again. Mouthwash, while leaving your mouth feeling even more minty fresh is a step you can skip after brushing. However, if you do feel the need for a post-lunch swill to help prevent tooth decay, there's nothing wrong with using a mouthwash that includes fluoride. Just remember not to eat or drink anything for half an hour afterwards in order to give the fluoride time to be effective.

Floss.

Kellie confession: I hate flossing. I find it uncomfortable, awkward, I'm not that good at it, but I still do it. A good floss gets into the areas that your toothbrush can't, removing debris and helping to keep the plaque that causes tooth decay and gum disease minimal. The trick is to work it into your routine in a way that doesn't make it a chore. I find flossing while watching a television show or bit of YouTube before bed works best for me, especially as soon after I'll be brushing my teeth before hitting the hay.

Watch what you eat.

For years I was cavity-free as an adult. Any cavities I had happened in my teenage years when I mainlined fizzy, lollies and chocolate like there was no tomorrow. Then I had a particularly stressful period where I ate candy-covered chocolates by the handful all throughout the day. Reader, I got my first adult cavity. While I can't directly blame the sweets, I do believe there's a correlation happening there, which is why when dentists suggest you watch what you eat if you want to avoid tooth decay, I now listen.

The key things to minimise is eating or drinking anything sugary or acidic. And if you do it's recommended that you rinse your mouth with water afterwards.

Lastly, get regular check-ups.

Suffice to say, regular check-ups are important. Twice a year is the recommendation. However, in between check-ups if you notice any issues, do make an appointment to see your dentist, because a small problem tackled early is better than a big problem tackled late.

As for me... I now have a case of the guilts and will be calling my dentist for a check-up the moment I finish this article... followed by sending an email to my family letting them know that I want Christmas cash for that Oral-B toothbrush! I’d love to win so I can get cleaner healthier teeth than I do with my manual toothbrush. My dentist is always recommending I try an electric one and given the ratings this must be the best but the cost is a little out of my reach

This would be amazing to win, I read most of the reviews and can’t believe how good it is, this would really be an asset to my daily routine!

Oh, this is definitely a prize I would love! I went through so much pain and agony to get straight teeth (braces, two surgeries) that I’ve always tried really hard to look after my teeth. This brush would be super amazing!

18th November, 2022

Wow! I’ve never actually tried an electric toothbrush! I’ve been manually brushing for as long as I’ve been brushing! I do brush twice a day but my poor teeth just don’t look any better for it (I floss once a day too). Can’t get rid of some of the staining and can’t afford the dentist, would love to win this beauty!

Omg I would love this fancy toothbrush. I am a regular brusher but only with a manual brush. Would love to give my old teeth a good clean up

Why have a baby Nissan when you can have a Rolls Royce? My teeth deserve this, they have cost me a fortune in recent times and I have no intention of allowing them to deteriorate (or cost more!). What a review this Oral B top-of-the-line has received, and in reality it's no big deal to 'sacrifice' a couple of minutes at each end of the day to ensure your dental health is top notch. I would absolutely love to own one - it took me years to even brave the basic Oral B electric toothbrush, now I want the racy model!

I would love to win this toothbrush. I’m a regular brusher but would love to try a high tech toothbrush

18th November, 2022

I would absolutely love to give this electric tooth brush a go!! I am pretty good with brushing twice a day but not so good with flossing. My current toothbrush is Defo out of date and I am looking for a new one. I have read some of the reviews on this and it looks amazing!!!!!

18th November, 2022

Running my tongue around my fuzzy teeth, I'm relishing the thought of this dynamic Oral B - mouthful of model - luxurious toothbrush. Never thought I'd think of an electronic toothbrush as being luxurious, but after reading the reviews, Wow! I'm totally sold! (And yes, I'd class this brush as electronic, given all the amazing functions!)

Do I brush twice a day? Religiously. For two minutes each time? Doubtful. Have I thought about timing myself? Yes, but not when I'm distracted with my attempts to gently but effectively brush all surfaces thoroughly, and properly, without causing damage to teeth or gums. Phew! I get stressed just thinking about it.

Oral-B's iO Series 9 Electric Toothbrush would transform my toothbrushing routine into a joyful ritual, I have no doubt. My dentist would definitely approve, and so would my wallet, having just been through several rounds of filling replacements, due to cracking. Partly due to meds, and harsh brushing, and nocturnal teeth gnashing & grinding. Me thinks Oral B may be the miracle solving solution to a multitude of dental matters.

Plus my teeth and I could really do with some pampering!

18th November, 2022

I have spent alot of money on my teeth with a second set of veneers almost ten years ago which now look dreadful. My gums are moving, despite twice a day brushing! Maybe it’s a case of something as powerful and specialized as this to help? SOS

18th November, 2022

I am currently on my second year of using Invisalign and I am going through toothbrushes like crazy. I’ve been wanting to find a good electric toothbrush, not just the cheapest one because I know it’ll last longer given that I brush 4-5 times a day at the moment. An electric toothbrush would make my 4-5 brushes so much more convenient and less of a hassle because half the work is being done for me!

18th November, 2022

I would absolutely love to try this tooth brush. It looks and sounds amazing. I have a glued wire on the inside of my lower teeth and it is very hard to reach under it and recently I found out there was a plaque build up under the wire. I was told using a electric tooth brush would benefit and reach better due to its smaller brush head. This one would be absolutely perfect and I would be so grateful to win one xx

In whitianga we have 2 dentists who are fully booked months in advance, so you really need to be proactive about your own oral care. Such a highly rated product would definitely help!

18th November, 2022

I won’t say how much I have spent on my teeth in the last 5 year I’ve had braces on and I’ve had and still having restorative work done I’ve had to space it out as it’s so so expensive. And it’s all going to be in the upkeep of my teeth and gums to make all, this money and hard work stay in tip top condition the oral care will be ongoing so would be nice to have a perfect way to maintain my perlie whites x

18th November, 2022

Because I've spent years being told by my dentist that I have to start brushing my teeth more gently - and I've spent years telling him that I'm trying!! I just don't seem to be able to do it right, so I keep receding my gums apparently and scrubbing away my enamel. Eek! So this brush with its smart pressure sensor sounds like an absolute god-send for me. Plus the brilliant sensitive and gum care modes, and the clean-teeth gauge... I so need this in my life! What an amazing prize :).
