The Sneaky Guide to...REGIFTING

Regifting.  Is it the ultimate gifting no-no?  Probably.  But in the words of the lyrical genius that was George Michael:

We’ve all received a gift we haven’t liked at some point in our lives and wondered ‘what the heck am I going to do with this?’  For some it’s a case of quickly donating it to the nearest charity store. For others they hang onto it, living in fear that the giver one day asks where it is.

To be honest have no problem with regifting, I mean, one person's trash and all.  But there is an art to it.  So here lie the Rules of Regifting.

  • The item must be BRAND NEW and UNOPENED.  Do not palm of sullied, unwanted goods as as gift.
  • Don't regift just anything to just anyone.  Ensure your regift will be genuinely loved by the recipient.
  • Regift OUT of the circle.  The third and most important rule.  Under no circumstances should the original gifter ever find out that you regifted the gift. That means the gift has to be given to a person who is never ever in a million years likely to meet the original gifter.

So time to spill.   What ‘I don’t like this present’ category do you fall into: The Donater. The Hider. Or, The Regifter.

And if you are you a regifter? What are your tips and tricks? If you’re not a regifter, have you ever discovered your gift was once upon a time the gifter’s gift and how did you feel about having their despised dregs passed onto you?

Don't believe I've ever done it ...

I have re-gifted before, always never opened and new stuff, one gift I regret re-gifting was a necklace and earrings set from my Mum and Dad. I passed it on to my niece, which I am now regretting, as my Parents have both passed away a few years ago.

Yes I am king regifter lol My rule is only products I haven’t used.

No I don't regift but if something doesn't suit my skin etc I would give it to someone who I know would use it.

I would never regift but don't judge those that choose to do so because they probably have a good reason why.I have also been the recipient of regifted gifts many times and usually from my Mother of all people.I think she just forgets that I was the one that brought them, bless her!

I don’t regift as I have been the recipient of a gift I had given and it felt stink.. so I try and give vouchers or ask what gift they may like or buy a gift I know they want so it’s not seen as a waste.. any gifts I’m given that I don’t want go to charity or the op shop so hopefully someone would use them.

I have never regifted, and don’t have a problem with anyone regifting, as long as the items haven’t been used. I have been the recipient of a regifted gift though ... My cousin was given a handbag for Christmas one year, and it was totally not her style (not mine either) - it was large, blue, had elephants on it and covered in sequins. She told me about the gift and sent photos, asking what I thought she should do with it as she’d never use it. I suggested she ask around and see if someone she knew would use it, or to regift it to someone she knew would like it, but to make sure it went to someone who didn’t know the original gift giver. Clearly my advice backfired. I was given the bag for my birthday a year later! Haha. It felt weird getting something that I knew she had received as a gift, and I’d told her I didn’t like it either. I think she forgot that we’d had that conversation. I never used it, the handbag was donated to an Op Shop.
