The true cost of an Oscar Nomination

The one day of the year I look forward to the most isn't Christmas.  It isn't my birthday.  It isn't Halloween.  It's the Oscars.

As a film nerd it's the cumulation of awards season, it's the night where the magical escape of cinema is celebrated   As a beauty buff it's the night where fashion, beauty and bling collide in the most fantastical way ever.

All eyes are on the nominees and just think of the pressure to look good - they'll be heavily photographed and appear on TV and in magazines the world over.  And if they're lucky enough to take home a statue, they'll be immortalised in what they're wearing.  And we all know how that can turn out, don't we Cher?

So it's no surprise money isn't spared when creating an Oscar's Red Carpet look.  But just how much money are we talking?  We headed straight to the bible of money, Forbes and added up the cost.

Entourage:

  • Hairstylist - $2000 - $4000 for the day.
  • Makeup artist - $4000
  • Stylist - $7000
  • Seamstress/Tailor (for the perfect fit) - $1000
  • Personal trainer - $110 an hour
  • Dietcian - $7000 (over six months)

Treatments:

  • Facial - $345 a week, usually they'll begin 3 weeks before the event.
  • Laser skin touch ups (for feet and decolletage) - $600 a session
  • UV teeth whitening - $1000
  • Spray Tan - $85

The look:

  • Dress - on average around $15,000 (although Kate Winslet's 2007 Valentino gown was a reported $100,000!)
  • Handbag - $1000
  • Shoes - $1000
  • Jewellery - No less than $250,000.  (Beyonce's cocktail ring a few years ago was worth $10 million)

Now of course, when it comes to Oscar nominees, designers and jewellers will be throwing their wares at the starlets, hoping their name will form the answer to the most asked Red Carpet question "who are you wearing?".   And more often than not, it's actually in the studio's budget to have their stars looking fabulous. But whoever is footing the bill, the cost of a Academy Award nomination sure ain't cheap!

Oh my....that is a ludicrous amount of money to spend!!! I can't remember the last time I splurged for a night out, maybe my wedding?! :) I do my own hair/makeup and find something chain store to wear if there's nothing in the closet. Mind you, with 4 kids going out is pretty much an alien concept at the moment

Ummmmm why do you need laser touch up on your feet? Ha ha what am I missing?? Have hit the gym, out for walks, watched what I ate, had hair/make up done, new outfit, shoes and accessories for an event. I was on healthy wagon a good 6months before and all my new bits were on sale. Great deal with hair and make up as well. Doing the math now, would be fair to say $300.00 for everything. And being prepared, I brought things along the way. Crikey, that wouldn't even get a star studded facial!

We could feed many countries and rescue many animals with that amount of money!!

*Jaw drops* well after reading this article I don't think I'll feel bad on splurging on a night out (which is equivalent to peanuts compared to Oscar money). But I guess if you have the means why not? If it's a special event I'll always buy something new, whether a dress, shoes or top to go with what I already have. It would never be more than $150 - if it is it better be made of gold!

2 years ago for Hubby's work do I coincided getting a haircut with his work christmas party - but that's the most I've spent (and doesn't REALLY count) since my 6th form formal!

I spend nothing on a big night out. Although thinking about planning my wedding coming up... Regular facials might happen, expensive dress will happen, but I'm thinking I'll probably still do my makeup myself :)

Oh wow my first high school ball I spent $140 and that was a dress, shoes, handbag and jewellery. I got my makeup and hair done for free. My last one I spent $100 as I got my dress of trade me which was a bridesmaids dress so gorgeous, my shoes of trade me, a $10 jewellery set from paganism which I still have and got my hair and makeup done at the shop.

Gosh, in the old days (pre-child, pre-SAHM) I would maybe spend $200 tops. That included dress and hair. My last event I did my own hair, did my own makeup and wore a vintage frock that I'd had reworked for $40. Cheap as chips, and I felt a million dollars. In saying that, if I had a money tree I would go all out.
