The true cost of an Oscar Nomination

The one day of the year I look forward to the most isn't Christmas.  It isn't my birthday.  It isn't Halloween.  It's the Oscars.

As a film nerd it's the cumulation of awards season, it's the night where the magical escape of cinema is celebrated   As a beauty buff it's the night where fashion, beauty and bling collide in the most fantastical way ever.

All eyes are on the nominees and just think of the pressure to look good - they'll be heavily photographed and appear on TV and in magazines the world over.  And if they're lucky enough to take home a statue, they'll be immortalised in what they're wearing.  And we all know how that can turn out, don't we Cher?

So it's no surprise money isn't spared when creating an Oscar's Red Carpet look.  But just how much money are we talking?  We headed straight to the bible of money, Forbes and added up the cost.

Entourage:

  • Hairstylist - $2000 - $4000 for the day.
  • Makeup artist - $4000
  • Stylist - $7000
  • Seamstress/Tailor (for the perfect fit) - $1000
  • Personal trainer - $110 an hour
  • Dietcian - $7000 (over six months)

Treatments:

  • Facial - $345 a week, usually they'll begin 3 weeks before the event.
  • Laser skin touch ups (for feet and decolletage) - $600 a session
  • UV teeth whitening - $1000
  • Spray Tan - $85

The look:

  • Dress - on average around $15,000 (although Kate Winslet's 2007 Valentino gown was a reported $100,000!)
  • Handbag - $1000
  • Shoes - $1000
  • Jewellery - No less than $250,000.  (Beyonce's cocktail ring a few years ago was worth $10 million)

Now of course, when it comes to Oscar nominees, designers and jewellers will be throwing their wares at the starlets, hoping their name will form the answer to the most asked Red Carpet question "who are you wearing?".   And more often than not, it's actually in the studio's budget to have their stars looking fabulous. But whoever is footing the bill, the cost of a Academy Award nomination sure ain't cheap!

Wow I knew it would be expensive but when its broken down like that its way more than I expected! This lil kiwi girl can't even afford the cheapest item, the spray tan haha!

This is really scarey -I would be looking at Max $200 and then I would be trying to spend less. The stars though do have huge incomes so I suppose it is part of the fans expectations.

I don't think I think about any event more than a week in advance and it's mainly which dress would I wear and plans for my hair, but then I don't have any really fancy events. My wedding day would be a different story I'd be thinking about that a year to 6 months in advance for a good reason. I guess the $4,000 for a makeup artist includes the manis and pedis.

My biggest night out was definitely ball and I spent $50 for makeup and hair, $200 for dress and $40 for shoes. And I definitely hit the gym more, but probably too much, because my dress ended up too loose :(

For important weddings I like to do the works...waxing, spray tan, professional hair stylist, a new dress. How ever, depending on my financial situation at the time that may be DIY or if lucky a trip to the professionals. This really only happens 2-3 times a year.

O to be rich a famous! I most assuredly wouldn't be wasting my money on crap like this!

25th February, 2015

I guess if you have the dollars?? Well even if I did have the dollars I doubt very much I'd be spending that sort of money on going to 1 event. But for these celebs these 1 events are soooooooooooo important! So bully for them - gimme my Opshops any day :) I actually just purchased a pair of leather sandals for $10 from an Opshop and they haven't been worn huzzah!!!

25th February, 2015

Wow if I only had the time and money to spend I to could be worthy of the red carpet.

Wow I have never thought about it like this before, great read Tabatha! There is no such thing as big night outs in this household, except recently my mum was up and she offered to babysit so we could have some "adult time" I took an hour doing my hair and makeup and carefully picked out an outfit to wear just to eat at a restaurant and play at the arcade afterwards, my profile picture was my "date night" :)

Absolutely frightening!

23rd February, 2015

I sometimes will buy a dress but I don't often go all out on a spending spree as money is tight but if I did have the money...heck yes ;-)

23rd February, 2015

If I had a big night out to go to, I might buy a new outfit, but that;s it, do my own hair and make-up, maybe get a spray-tan.

23rd February, 2015

How the other half live! I actually quite liked Cher's dress but there's no way I'd have the nerve to wear it lol

23rd February, 2015

Wow that's nuts! I could buy my own piece of paradise with what they spend hehe. If it is a huge night like a birthday or anniversary I might spend.....

$100 on a dress $40 on shoes and do everything else myself.

For my wedding night of course it was different my wedding dress cost $2300 and the shoes $100 but in the end I wore barefeet no amount of stretching was gunna fit my size 12 feet in those heels.

23rd February, 2015

Wow!!! I cannot fathom spending that much for an event! I don't think I'd even spend all that on myself for my wedding! I rarely buy something new if I do have something special. I do it all myself with the odd exception of a visit to the hairdresser or beauty counter at Farmers. Money is far too tight to do that several times a year though.
