The Year The Makeup World Tipped Upside Down

2015 was very much a backwards year for beauty. Not in a bad way though. From strobing to reverse ombre to smoky under-eyes, trends were turned upside down.

If one thing was to be on fleek during 2015 it was to be your highlight. Yep, highlight was hot and it only got hotter when strobing, aka reverse contouring, was introduced to the masses. Basically strobing was highlighting amplified and it set off a trend where contouring was shunned for creating a look on your face that meant the light would hit the high points in order to create definition.

Following on from 2014’s reverse under-eye wing was the reverse smoky eye. A look that quickly became must-try for beauty lovers.  This look that was both metaphorically and physically eye opening. How’d it work? In a nutshell, a light coloured shadow was applied to the upper lid before the under-eye area was transformed into a sultry smoky sensation, with black eyeliner applied and smudged out, followed by a smoked out dark eyeshadow and lashings of black mascara. Beautiful!

Ombre hair continued to be huge this year and it too saw the reverse treatment with fashion forward beauties sporting lighter locks up top fading (or should that be bolding?) into darker hues. Possibly not one for the naturally darker shaded – the maintenance costs boggles. But definitely a fun look to rock for those with lighter hair.

So what’s next in beauty? Will we see styles flip around again with a return to classic looks? Or will the reverse trend continue? Darker cheeks with highlight in hollows? Short on top hair with long tresses in a stylised mullet? I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to find out! So do tell, which backwards beauty looks were or still are your fav?

I love the ombré look (which I haven't personally tried)l I am only just beginning to get my highlight right,

I really loved the whole emphasis on highlighting (or "strobing" though I really can't see the difference other than as BR Amelia said - it's highlighting amplified). I'd really like to see more minimal / natural makeup. I love the whole glam / badabing badaba look but minimal can be just as stunning.

The Ombre look is amazing on a young person and the other two looks are lovely but I think both the girls would look lovely no matter what they used.

I love the reserve ombre and the smokey under eyes. Strobing is not really something for me. Ombre hair is something unique and beautiful :)

I enjoyed 2015 it was a year for self discovery for me as far as makeup has gone. It saw the reverse come back lol the grunge mix up 90s return and I was a teen in the 90s.I'm looking forward to what 2016 has in store I'm so ready

I really enjoyed 2015 in regards to hair and makeup, it seemed like there was much more that was acceptable, in example dark and bold lipsticks. I would love to see the mullet back, I have always been a big fan! Im excited to see what is in store for 2016 beauty wise :)

I'm looking forward to seeing new trends too. I only follow what I think suits me but I still like seeing them on other people! I can't see highlight going anywhere although maybe this year it might be all about matte?

I like all three looks, tho not necessarily on myself!

9th January, 2016

I like both the reverse ombre and the smokey under eye best.

I need to try strobing sometime but more like lightly applied strobing since I think it will make my skin look oily if I highlight to the max. I don't remember the reverse smokey eye. But something I started doing last year and will continue to do is blend colorful eyeliner on my lower lids and go with a neutral/nude eyeshadow and winged liner on my top lids. I have monolids so my lower lids stand out more than my top lids.

I love the reverse Ombre but the upkeep puts me of doing it myself (how I missed this trend last year I don't know). Thinking I might have to try the reverse smokey eye but I have dark circles and what worries me is that I would look like I have gone ten rounds in the boxing ring :p

The ombre hair is my favourite out of them all. I love highlighter but it can be overdone and look kind of greasy looking.

I love the ombré still. I reckon if you used your natural colour at the top then the maintenance costs wouldn't be too bad because you could leave it ages between redoing it. I'm pretty annoyed my hair isn't long enough (if it was this would be awesome as you could do it up to hide it at work).

I like the look of it all- just not on me! I'm too set in my ways.
