Mermaids. My Little Ponies. Rainbow Brite. Unlikely style icons, but the current trend for brightly coloured locks enable us ladies to channel our inner childhood characters.
Bright colours are no longer just for the young, teenage rebellion or for a fun night out, they're an every day expression of our personalities.
But if you're not ready to enter Cotton Candy Land just yet, there are ways to go bold with your hair colour without going over the top. Deep, intense colours like plum or mahogony offer more wearable shades for those who don't want to be too bright, and of course you can always incorporate just a hint of colour with splices, ombres or even just random streaks.
Whether you opt for bright-as-bright or a more muted colour statement here's some points and tips to consider;
- Consider your comfort zone. We're all about pushing boundaries, but it does take a certain amount of confidence to rock bold or unusual colours. There's no point taking the plunge if you're going to hide under hats.
- Think about the rules of the workplace. There's no point shelling out for a new 'do, only to have your grumpy manager tell you it's against policy and has to go!
- Bold hair choices will attract attention, so make sure your hair is in great condition - you want people noticing the shade, not the dry/damaged/split/frizzy strands.
- It's easier to acheive a bold colour on light hair. However if you have dark hair and want to introduce a hint of colour, consider using a bold colour, say purple, over your existing shade. The result will be a colour sheen that is more vibrant in sunlight, without being in-your-face bright. It'll also save you hitting the bleach bottle.
- Bold colours require maintenance - unless you're happy to rock faded/pastel locks, you're going to want to use semi-permanent dyes in between colouring, or specially formulated colour shampoos to prolong the colour.
- If you're nervous about taking the full head plunge, consider strategically placed splices. Colouring the under layers is a great compromise - a bold look, without having to worry too much about how the colour affects your skin type. If you're considering going the full head, why not try semi-permanent splices around the front of your face, so you can better understand the effects against your skin, before taking the plunge.
I love it! Just hate the maintenance
