Things I Wish I knew before I had an Undercut

I say it often.  Live it, learn it.  If you know me, you'll know when it comes to beauty trends I generally fall on the side of 'I'll give it a whirl'.  That being said, I kind of like to know what to expect.  Just so I can fully enjoy the ride.  This didn't happen when I went for the undercut.

I went in feet first, caution to the wind.  Letting my Hairdresser give me the world's highest undercut.  I even let The Husband shave a design into my nape, leaving me with actual skin head lines.  The whole experience was a bit unsettling - so many things I wish I knew beforehand, just so I could be mentally prepared.

I wish someone had told me...

...to be sure, really sure, that an undercut is what you want.  Because growing it out is a pain in the arse.

I was growing mine out the day after I had it done.  It just wasn't me.  And let me tell you, no matter how many clips you use, how much hair spray you spritz, you will always look slightly unkempt.  I mean look at this.  I successfully pile my hair into a messy bun.  I'm left with tufts sprouting out from below.  No one likes a tufty below.  (behave)

I wish someone had told me...

...to expect to become super paranoid about my neck.  I discovered rolls I didn't know I had.

Turns out I have the back-of-the-neck of a fat Vin Diesel.  Which also explains why my undercut wasn't photographically detailed.

I wish someone had told me...

...to manage my expecatations.  I learned that expectations of Ruby Rose will quite possibly end in a Big Boo 'do instead.

Before anyone says I'm being mean - shush.  I love Big Boo.  She is the best thing in OITNB, but come on, her hair is shocking.

If y'all like the feel, touch, look of short hair - good on you, I love it too.  On other people.  In reality as soon as I felt my own shaved patch, I was repulsed.  Bristles.  God even the word makes me shudder.

I wish someone had told me...

...that you'll forget you have an undercut.  My first shower post-buzz was like this.

Where's my hair gone?  Why does my neck feel like Bruce Willis' head?  Why the heck did I do this to myself?

I wish someone had told me...

...that you'll feel draughts you never knew existed in your house.  Scarves are the ultimate undercut accessory.

Collar up.  Turtle neck sweaters.  Your hairstyle suddenly impacts your fashion choices.

I wish someone had told me...

...that if you go for a close shave, you'll probably get an ingrown hair, or five.

Seriously, the only upside to an ingrown hair is the satisfaction of digging it out right?  I can still feel one under my three inches of grown-back hair.  So.  Annoying.

Have you had an undercut that turned a bit underwhelming?  Are you thinking about geting an undercut and keep hearing "just do it" instead of reasonable points to consider?  Or do you love it and rock it?

I use to have hair down to my lower back and decided a year a go to go short as I was sick of how much time and effort my long hair took. It was a gradual process going shoter but now I have a fantastic crop cut and an under cut.... Best decision ever!!! I have thin hair but LOADS of it and the under cut is way better than having to get it thinned all the time as my hair feels so heavy, I do need to get the under cut done every 6 weeks otherwise it gets too long but very quick and easy to get sorted. Its not for everyone but I love my undercut !! :D

I wish I knew my dad would absolutely kill me! When I was 14 my cousin did mine with a pair is scissors and a razor in the bathroom. My dad didn't notice for months and maybe o got a bit careless but then he suddenly did notice and I was so grounded. The horror was when I went to the hair dresser and said I was growing it out so they gave me this kind of Victoria Beckham short back and long sides cut - when it was oh so not in fashion in the early 90's.

I have been here but I loved mine the whole time. I like breaking that stigma around girls not being able to do certain things because it's not feminine. Well I have had the works, shaved side, mohawk and now an emo looking cut. Although I didn't experience all of what you did Nat I am at the point now where I am annoyed that it's much shorter than the rest of my hair cause I am in the process of growing it out. I think I will keep my one side shaved hair for a wee while longer cause I love how bold it is and how it magically gives me some much needed self esteem. Go figure, I dunno how but it just does. Good points though Nat. Thanks for the read xx

Your little pony tail is so adorable!! I haven't had an undercut just a side cut and I find the regrowth so annoying that I just keep shaving the side, as for my sister, shes growing her side back and she said its so frustrating trying to prevent it from looking silly, would you re-do it Nat?

I know an undercut wouldn't suit me so I've never tried one. But a great article on things you should know before you try one.

hahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha #dead. big boo is fabulous, i love her. as for the tufts, thanks to copious amounts of bleach I also have those... all over my head. but i am living with it, they're usually the softest part of my hair so i enjoy playing with them hahaha

I have one! Completely forgotten about it for the past few weeks... it's getting quite scruffy now. I've also never had an ingrown hair in my undercut either... pretty glad about that. To be honest, I only got one so that my hair wouldn't be as thick, and that didn't really work that well anyway.

No not for me -Very effective for a short time and then so scruffy !!! I must admit some people can wear it but they are the exception and probably have someone available to do their look and keep it pristine.

I can't tell you how much I love this article!!! From tufty below to OITNB, your writing is impeccable

Your so brave! Yes I did wanna get it done last year. But I've gone off the idea of it. I can't imagine having uneven curly under hair lol

9th January, 2017

Andddddd i still want to do it! I had my hair exactly like ruby rose did in that picture!!! Shaven one side short on the other thankfully nothing like Big boo lol I think you're brave for giving it ago! I am still tempted to do it. I think if i do, i'll maintain it to stay that way because that wee tuff of hair under your bun looks like a pain in the bum!

I will keep my hair long until I'm 40. Then I'll cut it short like yours. Is it still short?

I feel like it would be so refreshing to have an undercut in the summer for the heaviness reduction. Hair on your neck can get so hot and sweaty.
