I say it often. Live it, learn it. If you know me, you'll know when it comes to beauty trends I generally fall on the side of 'I'll give it a whirl'. That being said, I kind of like to know what to expect. Just so I can fully enjoy the ride. This didn't happen when I went for the undercut.
I went in feet first, caution to the wind. Letting my Hairdresser give me the world's highest undercut. I even let The Husband shave a design into my nape, leaving me with actual skin head lines. The whole experience was a bit unsettling - so many things I wish I knew beforehand, just so I could be mentally prepared.
I wish someone had told me...
...to be sure, really sure, that an undercut is what you want. Because growing it out is a pain in the arse.
I was growing mine out the day after I had it done. It just wasn't me. And let me tell you, no matter how many clips you use, how much hair spray you spritz, you will always look slightly unkempt. I mean look at this. I successfully pile my hair into a messy bun. I'm left with tufts sprouting out from below. No one likes a tufty below. (behave)
I wish someone had told me...
...to expect to become super paranoid about my neck. I discovered rolls I didn't know I had.
Turns out I have the back-of-the-neck of a fat Vin Diesel. Which also explains why my undercut wasn't photographically detailed.
I wish someone had told me...
...to manage my expecatations. I learned that expectations of Ruby Rose will quite possibly end in a Big Boo 'do instead.
Before anyone says I'm being mean - shush. I love Big Boo. She is the best thing in OITNB, but come on, her hair is shocking.
If y'all like the feel, touch, look of short hair - good on you, I love it too. On other people. In reality as soon as I felt my own shaved patch, I was repulsed. Bristles. God even the word makes me shudder.
I wish someone had told me...
...that you'll forget you have an undercut. My first shower post-buzz was like this.
Where's my hair gone? Why does my neck feel like Bruce Willis' head? Why the heck did I do this to myself?
I wish someone had told me...
...that you'll feel draughts you never knew existed in your house. Scarves are the ultimate undercut accessory.
Collar up. Turtle neck sweaters. Your hairstyle suddenly impacts your fashion choices.
I wish someone had told me...
...that if you go for a close shave, you'll probably get an ingrown hair, or five.
Seriously, the only upside to an ingrown hair is the satisfaction of digging it out right? I can still feel one under my three inches of grown-back hair. So. Annoying.
Have you had an undercut that turned a bit underwhelming? Are you thinking about geting an undercut and keep hearing "just do it" instead of reasonable points to consider? Or do you love it and rock it?

I use to have hair down to my lower back and decided a year a go to go short as I was sick of how much time and effort my long hair took. It was a gradual process going shoter but now I have a fantastic crop cut and an under cut.... Best decision ever!!! I have thin hair but LOADS of it and the under cut is way better than having to get it thinned all the time as my hair feels so heavy, I do need to get the under cut done every 6 weeks otherwise it gets too long but very quick and easy to get sorted. Its not for everyone but I love my undercut !! :D
