What Your Winter Skin Needs Right Now!

By BR Amelia

As much as I adore dressing up in coats and hats, gloves and scarfs and going for a walk in the fresh winter air, my skin hates me for it. Whilst in summer my skin behaves itself, in winter it dries out like a piece of bacon left too long in the oven, and from what I saw in the forum recently I’m not the only BR Babe to experience this.

So what are we girls to do? Well, crack into some new skincare of course! (Any excuse, right?!) … And there are a few not-do-dos we need to keep in mind too.

The key things you need to think about in order to maintain hydrated skin over winter are moisturisation, exfoliation, and avoidation. Yeah, that last one’s not a word, but I was on a roll.

Obviously if your skin is screaming out for moisture you’ll want to give it some. But what kind? Should you reach for the thickest moisturiser you can find? Yes and no. A thicker moisturiser is all well and good, but you need to make sure that it’s still appropriate for your skin type – in other words if you’ve oily skin and it’s feeling drier look for a richer moisturiser suited for oily skin, because a moisturiser for dry skin could cause your skin to get even oilier.

So what should you be looking for in a winter moisturiser? Keep an eye out for one that features hyaluronic acid as it keeps moisture in while plumping up the skin. At night you can apply a richer moisturiser, and if it has a retinol or Alpha-Hydroxy-Acid component, all the better as it will help to increase cell turnover.

If you haven’t already, add a serum into the mix, like Antipodes Hosanna Serum, which is specifically designed to hydrate the skin while improving the skin’s appearance. You can even layer your skincare, with a serum and then an oil for an extra-hydrating boost. Argan or jojoba oil are ideal.

Up your exfoliation – but not too much – you don’t want to leave your skin irritated, you just want to ensure that cell turnover is on the up, removing old cells and revealing fresh new ones.  Check out Za’s True White Exfoliating Clay – an amazing two-in-one exfoliant and mask product that is designed to clarify and brighten your skin whilst unclogging pores. Brilliant!

Oh and you know how some of us have a slight addiction to lip balms? Winter is the time to apply them with gusto in order to avoid cracked lips. (That’s a great excuse to buy another couple to have around the house, in the car or at work!)

So what should you not do if you want to avoid dry skin? You know how when it’s cold and you hop into the shower and you just stand there with the scalding hot water streaming down over you for as long as possible? You might want to stop doing that, as the hot water depletes your skin of its natural oils. (Hear that sobbing? Yeah, that’s me, oh how I love my long hot showers… but not anymore…) Keep your showers speedy, and don’t forget to moisturise as soon as you’ve gotten out and dried off to ensure you’ve trapped in all the moisturiser's hydrating properties. Another tip to help stave off dry skin is to not turn your heater up full bore. And if your skin is getting really bad consider investing in a humidifier in order to keep the air around you moist and your skin hydrated. Lastly put aside your facial and body foaming cleanser until the weather warms up again and swap it for a cream cleanser, as it’s gentler on the skin.

So are you suffering dry skin? Have you found a holy grail product that we all need to know about? Sharing is caring!

Definitely guilty of hot showers and just slathering moisturising products onto my face. I do find that having a dehumidifier works really well - it absorbs excess moisture from the room leaving it drier and slightly warmer, so you don't have to use the heater as much and won't dry out your skin. Your body will also be better because of the drier enrironment.

I still havent jumped on the serum bandwagon but I think I need to. My skin has been really dry this winter but I try to keep it moisturized daily, I am using a Vaseline face cream, I cant remember the name at the top of my head but I think I need something heavier.

I have dry skin on my body even more so now since winters hit and my hands are terribly dry I need to know what works. The other thing is I've found that my face has partial dryness, I've been exfoliating more and targeting the area of concern. I'm considering purchasing g a Clea sing brush asap

My Body moisturiser seems to go out the window during winter simply because its just too cold and I want to stay snug in my comfy clothes but I really should try to get into a routine of regular moisturising. Good point switching to a thicker/more nourishing face moisturiser though, I always use the same one all year but may consider switching seasonally to help keep my face happier!

I have found my holy grail moisturiser I'm sorry Olay fresh effects satin finish but you have been replace with MAC Mineralise Charged water moisture gel.

It's pretty expensy at $84 but oh my gosh, I first got a sample from the store which lasted me a week and I could already see the difference in my skin after a week, so I gave in. My skin is now the best it's ever been, and in a southern winter that is a bold statement.

I have no patches of dryness or windburn like peeling, my skin is plump bright and looks amazing, the size of my pores around my nose have reduced and oh gosh I sound like a bad infomercial but I love it. I love it so much.

I've recently started using serum and I'm hooked - it's soooo nice on dry skin and gives a nice healthy shine :) My skin is dry so I like to stick to a heavy night cream - for better or worse!!!

I love Antipodes Hosanna Serum, in fact I use it year round nightly under my regular serum or facial oil. I also have found that just a non-spf moisturizer at night in winter doesn't really cut it for me I need a nighttime moisturizer or at least something thicker. I can however layer a non-spf moisturizer under my spf moisturizer for an extra moisture boost.

Guilty of the hot showers and not moisturising enough when I get out. It's just so cold putting the stuff on!

My skin is pretty cruddy over winter to be honest, it doesn't really dry up heaps but just feels and looks yukky :( I also work at a Hospital so very drying conditions and not good for the skin.

I would love to try a serum, have heard a lot about them

I've been quite sick this winter. Actually have just gotten over a nasty cold/flu and that was a good 10 days worth.

And also trialing new medication for anxiety/mild depression, these always wreck havok on my skin as well. I am so bad at not sticking to night time and morning routine. And I really do need to get my butt into hear and do it, I mean I've noticed my skin is so thirsty and dry!! From being sick and looking at my face it's like all my deep lines (eg between brows) are screaming look at me atm!! And when I'm strict with my routine, these angry lines are really softened. I need to get on it!! Actually could totally do with a facial lol.

I still have trouble with my skin but it has been better this year as I have been using trilogy rose hip oil.

I was suffering from patches of dry, and I have found that my newest acquisition of Snowberry Starbright Moisturiser is actually doing a really great job at keeping my skin hydrated (and I Rose hip oil! for an added boost). Of course internal hydration is paramount too and I have increased my warm liquid intake to help ;) hot lemon drinks to stave off colds etc.

I find antipodes handcream very temporarily keeps hands from getting dry and vaseline on the lips to keep them moisturized. The rest of my body however still suffers dry skin a little bit in winter.

My skin is usually quite dry in winter and this has some great tips im already following. I use a very hydrating moisturiser, a serum and the use of the new cleansing brush has been great for my skin. All the recommendations have paid off, as my skin feels so nice!

Great article! I'm currently experiencing dry skin for the first time ever so heaps of handy hints here. I have always been curious as to what order to apply a serum and oil, good to know I'm doing it right! I do think I need to up my exfolliation though, as I was reading this I was applying my serum over my cleansed skin and could feel so many dry, rough patches that need some work!
