What You Need To Know About YOUR Wrinkles

Nature gives you the face you have at 20. Life shapes the face you have at 30. But at 50, you get the face you deserve. – Coco Chanel

Something strange is happening to my body. Little lines are appearing on it, and not just every now and then, it’s happening on a regular basis. It’s like I wake up and * boom * there goes a few more lines etched around my lips and my eyes. The existing ones have deepened, especially on my forehead, where soon they’ll be giving the Mariana Trench a run for its money. It’s kind of like how one day you see an ant or two in your kitchen and then the next day they’re swarming over every inch of your meticulously clean kitchen counter * cough *.

I know what’s causing these little lines too. Partly it’s because I’m far too happy. My little human makes me smile all the time, which is totally causing the crows feet around my eyes. We spend far too much time having mummy/daughter kissy kissy moments, which is to blame for the vertical lip lines (I’ve never smoked, so no blame can be laid there). Other causes? Well the small valley running between my eyes can be blamed on being a particularly grumpy teenager, followed by general life/job stress in my 20s.  And the last cause of these new and wholly unexciting lines? The march of time. There’s no denying it, I’m getting older. I’m on the slide-side to 40 and gravity, environmental factors and a well-lived life is taking its toll.

So what’s a girl to do? Get her Wrinkle 101 on! And find out which lines can be reduced, eliminated and put on hold, that’s what!

First question? What causes wrinkles? Especially the ones you get when you’re still relatively young?

Lifestyle can play a huge factor in premature wrinkling. If you’re a sun bunny chances are you’ll end up a wrinkled sun bunny. The sun’s UV rays are known to break down both elastin and collagen in the skin, and when that happens your skin starts to sag and that, in the long run, causes wrinkles.

Smoking is another way to increase your chances of wrinkling earlier. Not only does it dehydrate the skin, making it easier for wrinkles to form, it also hinders blood from reaching the surface, therefore depriving skin of oxygen and precious nutrients. And the chemicals in cigarettes are known for playing havoc with the all-important collagen and elastin our skin needs to keep looking plump and youthful. As for all that repetitive squinting from smoke getting in your eyes and lip puckering from sucking, well that doesn’t help stop wrinkle formation either.

Sleeping (I know!?) can also cause wrinkles. If you’re waking up from sleeping to find grooves in your face (and trust me the older you get the longer they take to disappear during the day), those grooves over time if you don’t change your sleeping position will go from sleep lines to proper wrinkles.

Being free and easy with your facial expressions can cause premature ageing too. Repetition of movement, from eyebrow raising and lip pursing to smiling and frowning, causes areas of the skin to crease and over time those creases become more prominent.

And of course there’s genetics. If you’re in your twenties and already seeing forehead wrinkles or wrinkles forming under your eyes go stare at your parents or grandparents and see if they’ve got them too, because chances us you’ve inherited them from them.

So what’s a gal to do? The biggest one is to avoid the sun unnecessarily. If you’re heading out, slop on that sunscreen, slap on a hat, and hide in the shade while repeating to yourself “The Sun! It’s buuuuurns!” If you smoke, cut down or stop.

If you’re a side-sleeper the best way to avoid sleep-induced wrinkles is to sleep on your back.  If sleeping on your back is not an option due to pregnancy, back issues, health problems like sleep apnea, you can always invest in a satin pillowcase so your skin can slide over it, rather than get stuck in a cottony rut.

If like me you lose every poker game because your face is one big old expression, well, you can try and control your expressions by practicing a Mona Lisa-style countenance.

As for genetics? You can just try and prolong the inevitable. If corrugated iron foreheads run in your family, try not to lift your brow too often. If crows feet appear out of nowhere, start using eye cream early and try not to squint too much.

But let’s be honest, we can apply moisturisers and oils and serums galore, but there’s no easily escaping the passage of time. As we age our skin is going to wrinkle, some more than others, but at least we now have some idea how we can slow its progression over our face and body - and I sure wish I’d known about some of them, mainly keeping out of the sun, a whole lot earlier.

So tell me, are you already on wrinkle patrol and taking as many measures as possible to stop them coming earlier than necessary? Have you been doomed to certain wrinkles thanks to hereditary factors? Or are you not bothered by them at all, and see them more as marks of a life lived to the fullest? Chat away ….

I am constantly on wrinkle patrol. I didn't know that about satin pillowcases time for me to invest in one I'm a foetal position sleeper and can never stay on my back no matter how hard I try. I definitely need to up the water too I am using much more SPF now than ever but the damage of lots of running in my teenage years without SPF may have taken its toll

I am so totally taking all measures I can think of to try and keep from getting wrinkles... I'm starting to see my smile lines :( Time to stop smiling!

1st September, 2015

My frown lines are prominent, blame it on a hard relationship. To my advantage though they only go half way across(well I think it's an advantage ) due to my scarring on half of my face. My undereye wrinkles believe it or no have somewhat decreased same with my eyelid wrinkles I'm giving credit to 1 Oasis beauty lips and lashes,2 bossy cosmetics under eye boudoir & Lancome eye gel. I do have laugh lines & the eye contour dip which I think is from sleep aswell as product overload in the past.... I'm grateful for genetics and my oily combo skin. I don't seem to have age lines around lips but that being said I do have scarring there so this ca uses me problems with lipstick application. Ohhhh the list is long. I did smoke drink and have a heavy 20s with incorrect lifestyle hardly sleeping due to working the graveyard shift then partying most days and nights and definitely weekends then midway thru my 20s I became mum which lead me into the whole sleepless parents nights no skincare routine and a volitile relationship like I said the list goes on...... I think in all I need to be more grateful for the skin I'm in be it scarred, aged or uneven tone. It's me who I am at this time of my life. :)

I've definitely noticed sleep wrinkles! I've heard a silk pillow case is meant to help this problem but they are pretty pricey @ $70 each. I make sure I have an extra glass of water before bed when I take my wrinkle reducing collagen tablets. I'm trying to stretch out my Botox treatments as they are pricey in NZ to 6-8 monthly and so I'm trying everything possible to mankind for wrinkle reduction. I do not take wrinkles in my stride- I find them horrid and a symbol of the end of my youth!

I've got a few horizontals on my forehead and a faint eleven. But the ones that bother me are the smile lines because the forehead ones are caused by tension and the smile lines aren't so they don't iron out. I would recommend facial massage for your forehead as that relaxes you.

Good article, I knew about smoking, sun damage and sleeping on one side causing extra wrinkles. Thanks to good family genes, I have managed to stay looking a lot younger than my actual age for a long time, but now I am (ahem) in my more mature years, I am very aware of wrinkles, especially around my eyes, top lip and sides of my mouth. Since joining BR, I have been making more of an effort to keep ageing at bay.

I am definitely on wrinkle patrol I know I have to give up smoking eeeeek that's my major problem and spending all day and every day out in the sun with no SPF for years playing with my horses. So I am using anti-ageing creams and staying out of the sun unless I have some protection. And drinking water with a squeeze of lemon and I have a silk pillow case buy I'm not sure anything is helping lol :)

I find the lifestyle factors play a huge part on how my wrinkles look. They there because I'm 51, but if I'm rested, not stressed and have been eating well, then they are less noticeable. However if I've been burning the candle, have too much going on with loads of stress and don't generally be kind to myself, I can look quite haggard. The moisturisers with hyaluronic acid really make a difference to the plumpness of my skin. A good slathering is like wrinkle poly filler.

I'm not really on wrinkle patrol (yet) but my skincare regime has definitely improved since joining BR (flipping awesome community)!

I do have a few fine lines on my forehead but they're not obvious only to my big eyes because that's how I judge if my liquid foundation application is any good haha. This year I started to apply my mascara and straighten my hair with as little frowning as possible - I still catch myself doing it but not as bad as I used to.

31st August, 2015

I have lots of smile wrinkles but my worst ones are my neck which are heredity and I would love to do something about them but would require a neck lift .My mum and her Mum had a saggy neck and I am heading that was=y too.

30th August, 2015

Thanks for this article BR! I'm nearing my mid twenties and its good to know what to start doing to prevent those pesky wrinkles! I am a side sleeper so will be looking for a silk pillow (what a great excuse to be luxurious!!) and will try not to frown so much hahaha (im a huge worrier so always frowning!).

30th August, 2015

I am already on patrol. Trying to stop them before they happen. I will get a satin pillow case.

30th August, 2015

Kids do have the tendency to make you smile constantly :) the cheeky wee things, and yes I am sure the smiles will turn to frowns as they reach teenage years, but sleeping causing wrinkles I am not happy about... I don't even get that much sleep and I am still getting too many lines for my liking... I guess I have genetics to blame there :/ my mum did age prematurely but she blamed us kids lol

30th August, 2015

I'm on major wrinkle patrol! Poor genetics, dry skin and being useless with SPF left me with deep, deep forehead wrinkles, so last year, at the age of 26, I decided I had to take action. They just made me so self-conscious, they aged me like crazy, my makeup would settle in to them and because I have a giant forehead there were a LOT of lines.

So, I got botox, and have continued to do so since. I've only told a couple of people close to me as it's not really something you shout from the rooftops, but nobody else has ever noticed because it doesn't make me look strange/contorted etc it literally just smoothes the lines out, I can still move my brows and what not. I understand wrinkles are a part of life, I have wrinkles around my eyes and mouth that are from normal wear and tear for someone of my age that I'm fine with, but I just couldn't accept living with the wrinkles of a 50yr old on my forehead! And the bonus with the botox is that they're now not going to get worse as the years go on.

Wear SPF ladies! I keep meaning to buy a silk pillowcase though so need to remember to do that!

mine are just the outer eye ones for now... hopefully the rest stay far away lol

Good on you. I've always found botox a bit terrifying.

Thank you for sharing Sarah - I was thinking I was going to have to take you to get your eyes checked if I meet you one day lol but I understand now :-) Dumb question alert - does it hurt to get it done?

Sarahbeautynz
31st August, 2015

Haha Koni, you hardly feel it - it just feels like a couple of tiny pin pricks. Itsclearascrystal, as long as you go somewhere reputable it really is nothing to be afraid of, you'd be surprised by how simple the whole process is :)

Botox is the one treatment I really want. When I'm done studying, it's attack if the Bottom on my frown lines and crows feet.

Oh dear, my phone is playing tricks on my typing and now I can't change it. It shoukd say botox!

Sarahbeautynz
31st August, 2015

Sounds like a fabulous plan Janini! You'll love it. Not sure if you're already aware but you can on to a plan to pay for the botox monthly which helps make it affordable, not sure if that would fit a student budget though.

Prettyclotheshorse, I know it sounds cliche but it really does depend on how many areas you want done and how deep your lines are, this dictates how many units (injections) you need, hence the need for a consultation. I only need 10 units.

Sarahbeautynz
31st August, 2015

I believe most people require more units than me, but I pay $900 annually to get my units every 3months. From what I understand fillers cost more, it costs $710 per 1ml (juvaderm) but they only come in 1ml tubes so you have to buy at least 1ml lol

*Sniffles* 1ml - goodness me. Where's Candylipz at hahaha. I swear that 1ml better have specks of gold because that hurts just reading it :-S

Lol I agree Koni, it's a tad ridiculous! Good ol NZ prices. I've just gotten to the point of intrigue that I just have to see what happens though! It's a bit more palatable when you don't have to pay the full amount up front x

yes in winter but summer leaves me a bit self conscious
