image: ASOS Clip in Man Bun
By BR Tabatha
I’m a member of the man bun appreciation society. I love a good topknot or low-down look, especially when combined with a hint of beard or a whole lot of beard for that matter. I may have even been known to Google Image search ‘man bun model’ and spend probably more time than I should drooling. I mean, researching. Because you know, man buns are beautiful and I work for Beauty Review … and … yeah…
Anyway, I was reading Stuff the other day and saw the word ‘man buns’ and immediately clicked onto the headline because the other words in the headline contained ‘clip in’ and ‘we’re very upset’.
I couldn’t believe what I then read. Didn’t want to believe. But apparently it is true.
Clip in man buns exist.
Can’t lie, I may have mentally rocked backwards and forwards in horror for a minute there. What did this mean? Was my favourite man-bunned barista lying to me? What about the hot guys on Instagram? Were they not for real? And what if I met a man-bunned man and we had a connection and then we got to know each other, started dating, things lead to other stuff and then one day I’d wake up to see his man bun lying beside the bed? Could I love a man who lied to me?
And that was the kicker right there, because just like that I had memes pop up in my head about false advertising and how we women are apparently good at it. Think push up bras and makeup and how what you see isn’t necessarily what you get. Normally I’d hear a man spout on about how a woman is lying to him by pushing up her girls and I’d be thinking ‘what a blow hard’. But what did that make me if I felt the same way about a man wearing a clip in man bun?
Beard Baubles (charity product)
It was time to change my tune. I showed the article to one of the BR crew and she mentioned how you can buy beard baubles as well and then she said this:
“The world is finally making things right.”
Light bulb moment right there. We women have been big on beautification for centuries upon centuries and while men during that time had dabbled in it on and off I had to wonder if it’s ever reached this level. A level where men can now wear makeup, adorn their beards with flowers and trinkets and clip in man buns because they want to rock the look without committing to it – the same way we’ll add in hair pieces to lengthen our hair without committing to being a fulltime mermaid – without anyone batting an eyelid.
It’s a beautiful thing and I’m glad to live in an age where it’s ok for men to do that. It’s an age of beauty equality and I’m going to embrace it! Men, go forth and wear your pretties in your beards, apply lashings of mascara, wear those man buns… and if I run my hands through your hair checking for a hair clip or two… forgive me, because, well… some changes do take time…
So are you a man bun fan? Would you be ok with finding a man bun lying next to the toothbrush in a bathroom? Do you love that men can embrace beauty in the same way we do or would you rather they go rough and ready while we continue to paint our plumage? Get chatting….
First Lady would like to add two things.
1. This hilarious video of men trying on the Clip In Man Bun:
2. This has to be the most enjoyable stock image search ever. So I simply had to get our money's worth. Here is 'Young Man Adjusting Hair' as seen on the homepage.
Not my cup of tea (or shot of liquor either), but the issue of men not having 'real' hair is a double standard and if it were men standing there pointing finger at women then all chaos would ensue. Rocks shall not be thrown in glass houses my pretties (disclaimer: I see this as no different to a wig or toupee though and to be fair it's still not for me).
