With A Wave of My Wand

Article by BR Tabatha

If eyes are the windows to the soul, eyelashes are the frames – and if you’re anything like me you prefer your frames to look as lush and full as possible. Of course we all have different needs, some require length or lift, others volume or separation, we might even want a little of all of the above.

Alas, it’s not as easy as reaching for any old mascara. You have to choose the right one for your needs. And in fact, some makeup artists would tell you it has nothing to do with the formula and everything to do with the brush – so depending on your needs what type of brush should you be looking for?

For thick va-va-voom lashes you need a thick and bristly brush. They work by pulling the lashes together, creating a closer more lush look. Check out the wand on Maybelline’s Volum’ Express to get an idea of what to look for.

If you want long flutter-worthy lashes, look for a long and skinny wand to define and stretch, like Clinique’s High Lengths mascara.

Do you dream of lifting your lashes in the same way you lift your ‘girls’? Look for a wand with a curve in it. These imitate the shape of your eye, and when wiggled back and forth as you sweep the wand through your lashes with the curve facing upwards, will create a beautiful curl and lift. Check out the curve on Max Factor Club Defy mascara!

Are you dying to create defined eyelashes? Find a bristly ball wand, like the one seen on Givenchy’s Phenomen’Eyes Mascara. It may look weird, but this little ball helps you give individual attention to each lash, and gives you the ability to reach every single one – from the longest most easily accessible through to the smallest lashes in your inner corners.

Our poor old lower lashes are often left looking like mangled spider legs, or ignored altogether, but these too can look lovely with the right wand. Clinique’s Bottom Lash Mascara features the tiniest of wands so you can get in there without clumping or smearing.

So what’s a girl to do once she’s finds her perfect wand, especially if it’s on the expensive side of the fence? Keep it! Then use it with an affordable mascara – that way you can continue to create beautiful lashes, even if you’re on a budget!

Was this an eye-opening read or are you already au fait with the ins and out and ups and downs of mascara wands? What are your favourite mascara wands, and do you have any tips and tricks to creating beautifully framed eyes?

Wow, these brushes made my eyes boggle... especially the Givenchy one. I never knew so many different types were out there and how they all work differently from the next.

Ha ha I have never seen or heard of the Wand Ball before. What a funny looking brush.

Wow! Ii didn't realize there were so many different types of brushes lol, must be living in a cage! The ball brush intrigues me...............might have to have a look at that, or have a look and see if any reviews on BR.

I had not idea that they were so many different types of brushes with mascara. I will have to try a different type next time I buy a new mascara.

I am going to try the Maybelline Volum' Express mascara next, my lashes are too thin.

To be honest I haven't ever really paid attention to the mascara wand but I do have a hard time getting in the corners in bigger brush wands so I prefer smaller wands.

I agree that its all about the wand! I like curved brushes like my maybelline falsies.

I can say that over the years I've spent quite a bit of time trying to find the perfect mascara for my long lashes. So far it's the Moisture Mist Impressive Lash. I'm dieing to try EOH mascara but simply can't afford too. This is a great article. I never knew that there was a mascara just for your bottom lashes!

I am actually now keeping my old mascara wands so I don't have to buy many different types of mascara

Great article Tabatha! Really happy to see this on here so I don't have to google and mark it on a different website; I can now source it from one place :-)

I've always wanted to know the point of a bristly ball wand and I'm quite tempted to try it along with the wand for the lower lashes.

I know there are many choices because on my search for the "perfect" mascara I have tried many! I love the Max Factor for lift and I have a fully thick Covergirl for when I want thick lush lashes.

That bristly ball wand looks fascinating and thanks for the article. Wouldn't it be great if you could buy these brushes individually and apart from mascara. I have a few old brushes here actually that are different. I must clean them and give them another shot.

Aww the tiny Clinique wand is so cute! I really want to try the spikey ball want but don't think I'll be able to afford that anytime soon.

Darn it I always reply before finishing my novels!? Favourite "wands" would have to be Rimmel Glam Eyes Flirt (long and skinny) and the Benefit Roller Lash (skinny and curvy).
