With A Wave of My Wand

Article by BR Tabatha

If eyes are the windows to the soul, eyelashes are the frames – and if you’re anything like me you prefer your frames to look as lush and full as possible. Of course we all have different needs, some require length or lift, others volume or separation, we might even want a little of all of the above.

Alas, it’s not as easy as reaching for any old mascara. You have to choose the right one for your needs. And in fact, some makeup artists would tell you it has nothing to do with the formula and everything to do with the brush – so depending on your needs what type of brush should you be looking for?

For thick va-va-voom lashes you need a thick and bristly brush. They work by pulling the lashes together, creating a closer more lush look. Check out the wand on Maybelline’s Volum’ Express to get an idea of what to look for.

If you want long flutter-worthy lashes, look for a long and skinny wand to define and stretch, like Clinique’s High Lengths mascara.

Do you dream of lifting your lashes in the same way you lift your ‘girls’? Look for a wand with a curve in it. These imitate the shape of your eye, and when wiggled back and forth as you sweep the wand through your lashes with the curve facing upwards, will create a beautiful curl and lift. Check out the curve on Max Factor Club Defy mascara!

Are you dying to create defined eyelashes? Find a bristly ball wand, like the one seen on Givenchy’s Phenomen’Eyes Mascara. It may look weird, but this little ball helps you give individual attention to each lash, and gives you the ability to reach every single one – from the longest most easily accessible through to the smallest lashes in your inner corners.

Our poor old lower lashes are often left looking like mangled spider legs, or ignored altogether, but these too can look lovely with the right wand. Clinique’s Bottom Lash Mascara features the tiniest of wands so you can get in there without clumping or smearing.

So what’s a girl to do once she’s finds her perfect wand, especially if it’s on the expensive side of the fence? Keep it! Then use it with an affordable mascara – that way you can continue to create beautiful lashes, even if you’re on a budget!

Was this an eye-opening read or are you already au fait with the ins and out and ups and downs of mascara wands? What are your favourite mascara wands, and do you have any tips and tricks to creating beautifully framed eyes?

Wow! So many options and I want all of them. Have never used or seen anything like the Givenchy brush. Love Givenchy Parfum so I think they would make a fantastic mascara too.

Gosh I'm learning so much:) I knew there were different brushes but I didn't realise there were so many

OMG I am going to go buy a mascara in all of these brush styles or the brush in all styles and have a play to see if I can make my lashes perfectomundo

I use and love the Clinque's High Length mascara. The brush makes it really easy to get in close to the lash line without worrying about getting any in your eyes. It also means no clumping for nice easy, natural looking lashes.

Great article! I My favourite wand would have to be Benefit's 'They're real!' wand. It's shaped a bit like the Maybelline one above but has a few little spikes on the end to get the definition right in the corners and of course the lower lashes!

Oh em gee that Givenchy one looks like a torture device! I love the look of that clump defy one, that might be next on my list after I use the 4 sitting waiting for me already.

I didn't know there were so many different brushes to choose from. That Givency one looks pretty interesting, wouldn't mind giving that a try.

Yikes! There's a lot of choices. personally I like to stick with the thick and bristly type of wand. My eye sight isn't good enough to get up close and personal with anything too technical :)
