Would you cut your own hair?

There are some salon results that can be achieved at home.  Waxing, tanning and pedicures for example.  And then there are some things that should just be left to the professionals right? Like cutting hair.

I cannot fathom taking a pair of scissors to my own hair - judging by my colouring-in skills and my un-even picture hanging, I'd be better off taking a set of clippers to my head, than attempting to cut my own hair.  The thought of an uneven and unsightly hair cut is enough to keep any second thoughts away.  I can safely say I never have, nor ever will, cut my own hair.  I will not trim split ends, I will not tidy my own fringe and I will not attempt to shape my hair in any way.

The main reason for cutting your own hair is likely to be the expense of regular hair cuts.  Which is where I've been lucky my whole life, by always knowing a hair dresser.  And by knowing I mean in the family.  My auntie, my cousin, my sister-in-law's sister.  My current stylist is my sister-in-law.  Her salon is literally a 2 minute walk from my house.  Fringe trims, split ends, brightening up my colour - it's no more than a text away.  And yes the mates rates probably add to the convenience.  But seriously, even if I knew no hairdressers, I think I would still prefer to opt for a low maintenance style, colour my hair at home and leave the cutting to the professionals, at whatever interval I could afford it.

So I was gobsmacked by recent chatter on the forum.  I had no idea so many people cut their own hair at home - and not just trimming, but actual re-styles!  So I got chatting to the hairdressers in my fam-bam and asked for their tips on cutting my own hair.  This is what they came up with:

  1. Don't.  To be fair, this might just be aimed at me - I'm not known for my hand-eye coordination.
  2. Invest in a decent pair of scissors.  Hairdressers spend hundreds of dollars on the perfect pair of scissors - they also have them regularly sharpened.  Buy the best scissors you can afford - this is not a job for the junk-drawer scissors!
  3. Start small. Maybe just attempt taking a small amount off of the ends, snipping off your splits ends or neatening your fringe.  Take it slowly - this is not something to tackle when you're short of time!
  4. Remember - hair stretches when it's wet, so take extra caution when trimming wet hair - it may end up shorter than you think!  BUT always keep your hair wet while cutting it for a neater finish. You'll also want to soften the line when you're finished - pull your hair into a hair tie, slide it as close to the ends of your hair as you can and make small vertical snips.
  5. Don't over compensate!  Like your eyebrows, you want to avoid the 'even trap'.  You know, where one looks thinner, so you pluck the other one, which then becomes the thinner one, so you pluck the other one some more, until you end up with no brows?  Do not do this with your hair.  If it's not looking right - admit defeat and go to the hairdresser.  Less you want to go much shorter than you envisioned.

Do you cut your hair yourself?  Why do you choose to DIY rather than see a professional stylist? How adventurous do you get - do you just trim the ends, or do you do proper cuts?  Or are you like Tabby, and refuse to let anyone but a trained hairdresser cut your locks?

I have trimmed it in the past but because it is curly I can get away with it but I prefer not to. Nothing makes you feel better than a great cut!

I used to have a regular hairdresser, but after moving away I didn't find a new one so I cut my hair myself, usually only the fringe though. I haven't actually been to a salon since around this time last year - but I'm not bothered. I would rather know that if I stuff up the only person I can blame is myself, and I didn't pay for a shoddy hair cut ;-)

I have done this before many times while being very broke, I have to say I've gotten better at it over time and sometimes i just don't feel like forking out $100 just for a trim, for a new style i'll fork out but still not that much

I used to trim my hair myself all the time. I did not trust hairdressers AT ALL. I went to a really expensive place in Newmarket once and asked for a fringe. They cut it so wonky that one side was 1 1/2cm longer than the other side (and yes, I actually measured my fringe length). Ugh hairdressers were not to be trusted.

Nothing ever really went wrong. My hair always just looked a bit boring because it was never cut into a proper style. For my hair type, I really need layers.

Since those dark days, I have found a really awesome hairdresser who actually listens to what I want and I don't end up leaving in tears hahaha!

I have light trimmed in between cuts as sometimes hairdressers have one side slightly uneven. I often trim my granddaughters hair if they get split ends too.

No. No no no. I would never cut my own hair. I'd rather splurge and get it done properly

This reminds of a period during my early teens when I was very much a tom boy and went through the short spiky phase. I would stand in front of the mirror snipping away with mums scissors. And yes no matter what I did it would never stay even and I frequently ended up sporting the bald patch look where I made a mistake. Thinking back now it must have looked terrible! I would never have the nerve to try it now.

I'm also lucky, my sister is a hairdresser at a great salon that's only a few minutes walk from my house also. However I don't get a lot of time so there has been the odd occasion where I've trimmed my split ends & fringe. I mostly colour at home too. I do have my sister cut when I need a thin out or want a complete restyle

I'm way too scared to let a hairdresser near my hair, let alone myself!!

No way would I cut my own hair, it would probably end up a disaster lol

I have cut my hair I did three times the first time I was six and wanted bangs then when I was nine and the last time I was ten. I failed miserably at giving myself a flattering and not to mention even hair trim. So I leave it up to a hairdresser or my mom to give my hair a trim.

i tried to cut my own hair after watching a youtube video lol.. Never again!

I would never cut my hair at home, but I do occasionally get out some scissors and trim off my split ends.

I've cut my own fringe before and I cut it way to short nearly ended up a number two, I kept trying to even it up, now I would rather walk into a lamppost because my fringe is to long and I can't see. Was so horrible now only my hairdresser only her x

22nd September, 2014

I've been cutting my own fringe for a long time now, starting from when I had a full fringe, hairdressers always managed to cut it wayyy higher than my eyebrows despite me asking for just below the brows. In the past two years I've started cutting my entire head of hair alone, just trimming the ends, at the start of this year I cut it back to near shoulder height and have never really had a problem. If I wanted to go for a new style I would definitely go to the salon, but for trimming/cutting below shoulder height, I'm happy doing it myself :)
