I have zero problems with people indulging in cosmetic tattooing. If it makes them feel good, if it rectifies an issue that's bugging them, if they want to do it 'just because', I say go for it. Eyebrows, eyeliner, lip liner... go forth and be emboldened. However... recently I saw a picture of a woman who'd had freckles tattooed on her face and I truly didn't know what to make of it.
First of all, I love freckles. I think they're super cute, but I am not in ownership of them so I can't speak to what it's like to live with them day after day. However, I have friends with freckles who range from loving them, to hating them, to being indifferent. But none of them, when I asked, said that they'd have freckles tattooed permanently. Why?
Because it's not hard to create freckles with makeup that can then be washed off at the end of the day.
Perhaps that's what has got me so confused about this cosmetic tattooing trend. Lips, eyeliner, brows I can understand because it's all the most basic of beauty. Some people line their eyes every day and, for them, it's not a trend it's a way of life, so tattooing eyeliner on their lids makes sense. Some people find with age that their lip line looks blurred and their lips lose colour so, once again, tattooing your lips to create more depth and crispness makes sense. Brows do have their trends, but if you've gone too far with the skinny brow and regret it, or if you're experiencing hair thinning in the brow area and are tired of creating brows every single day, brow tattooing is a great way to go to save time and hassle... but tattooing freckles?
Let's be honest. Freckles are big right now. I feel like 90% of the beauty YouTubers I watch when doing a get ready with me are dotting freckles with their brow or eyeliner pencils all over their face, or adding a beauty mark here or there for effect... but are they racing out to make it permanent? No. Because it's a trend. In the same way that yellow blush was a trend. Something that is fun to play with, but not a forever thing.
Is it great that freckles are getting highlighted as being something beautiful, considering how so many people report being teased as kids for having them? YES. I love that. But again... I see no benefit to making a smattering of freckles on your face permanent...
That is, unless you really, really, really love the look and are doing it every single day for months on end and see no end to your adoration. In which case, you do you. As stated above... if it makes you feel good, if it rectifies an issue that's bugging you, if you're enamoured with the idea... go for it. I, however, will be sticking to my brow pencil freckles.
