Would You Like A Peel With That?

Why Facial Upgrades Are A Must In Winter
By BR Amelia

There’s nothing like having a proper facial done by a trained therapist. Yes you can create the facial experience at home, but it’s never quite the same as having a firm pair of hands that don’t belong to you slip and slide and moisturise and massage your skin, while you lie back with your eyes closed enjoying the sensation of someone taking else care of your skincare needs for a change.

Facials in winter are especially luxurious, the warm room, the soft towels, the candlelight, they all seem that much cosier and welcoming in winter than they do during the summer months. But the extra ambience isn’t the only reason you should see, or continue to see, a therapist during the cooler months. The number one reason to go is that winter, when your skin can be at its driest and gluggiest and the sun is at its weakest, is the perfect time to enjoy some add-ons on top of your usual facial. The two top treatments being microdermabrasion and skin peels.

Regular exfoliating during winter is a fantastic way to battle dry and flaky skin. It sloughs of dead skin cells and promotes cell turnover, helping to create softer smoother skin. At-home exfoliation does a good job, but in-salon microdermabrasion takes it to the next level. Most often a wand is used to blow crystals onto the skin before suctioning them away. In some salons diamond tip wands are used as they’re gentler, but the process and results remain the same – the top layer of skin is gently worked on to remove dead skin cells and encourage cell renewal and collagen creation. It can also help reduce the appearance of scars, fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage.

Another salon add-on that is perfect for winter is a facial peel. These can range from lactic to fruit enzyme to salicylic to glycolic acid peels, and within those categories the strength of a peel can vary too, so it pays to do your research before you book. Much like exfoliation, a peel’s purpose is to remove dead skin cells and rejuvenate the skin, whilst working to reduce the visible signs of ageing like lines and sun damage. A peel can be preferable to exfoliation as it can be tailored more to your skin’s needs. Peels can also penetrate the skin more deeply, provide quicker and more obvious results.

The other reason to peel or try microdermabrasion in winter is that after the treatment your skin becomes much more sensitive to the sun, so you’ll want to apply spf and keep out of it as much as possible, which is a lot easier to do in winter than in summer when the sea, sand and sun beckon.

Whatever method you choose you can be sure your skin will thank you for it while you sit back, relax and enjoy the cosy atmosphere inside as outside the wind howls, the trees shiver and the rain lashes the windows.

Have you had microdermabrasion or a peel before? How did you find it? Tell us all about it! (and don’t forget to review the salon in our Salon Review area.

I have never had a facial before, The closest thing i have had to a facial is one of those little sachets of face mask that you can buy from the chemist. I think it needs to be on my to do list though. Would be perfect for some me time

I'd love to be pampered and have a facial done in a salon it's been too long I've had microdermabrashion done years ago & I didn't really see the effects then. I did feel the difference I believe I'm in need of both the peel & the microdermabrashion. Being closer to 40 then 30 treatments are a needs must.

I haven't had either, although the microdermabrasion has often tempted me. I miss having salon facials and sadly are either a yearly or less often treat now.

I have never tried a peel or microdermabrasion before, maybe would prefer the peel if I had to choose.

I went for both earlier this week. It was my second visit to a Caci clinic and I must say the experience varied enormously. The Auckland city Caci really do go all out on the customer service and have a much nicer environment to the one I went to this week. I was quite dissapointed by that part of the experience to be quite honest.

It was my second dermabrasion and first peel and I'm glad I had both together. My skin is looking a little better for it that's for sure. I wish I could go once a week for a while to see maximum benefits though. At $128 a pop for both that's just not going to happen unfortunately.

Not able to have the luxury of any salon treatments, as have a sick husband and also support our son on a training course, no help from government, so I am the bread winner of the home. Interesting comments, some for and some not so keen.

Ive tried both but I really feel that you do need to do a course to get the best results- I haven't had the commitment or $$ to do this though...one day ~sigh~

Tbh I would not consider microdermabrasion. It sounds like sandblasting your skin! My skin is sensitive and I don't exfoliate very oftrn and when I do, it's a more gentle version. I will make a mask with milk or milk powder or I will use my Konjac sponge. I would worry that anything heartierwould aggravate.

I only had a few massage and a facials done when I traveled Asia. I haven't had a microdermabrasion or a peel before. It would be an amazing experience!

Love love love microdermabrasion and peels! Nothin at-home ever makes my skin feel and look better.

Yes! I had two treatments of microdermabrasion done the year before last year, as close to winter as possible for me to claim the special online. I loved how smooth it made my skin and all the little skin colored bumps were gone. It stung I'll admit it's not a completely relaxing facial especially when they do microderm and then a peel afterwards in the same treatment as your skin is sensitive but I like results. It doesn't fade pigmentation but it will smooth out your skin and give you a glow. I would have them on a regular basis if I could afford them or perhaps a series of laser, peels or something that should be done in a skin clinic every winter. I currently use low glycolic, salicylic, latic and other acid peels at home as a treatment weekly. I love peels they tend to be more pricey but they are so worth it in my opinion for the visible results of smooth and glowing skin. Just don't forget to apply spf daily and if you have a peel done in a clinic they will tell you to avoid sun for the rest of the day and makeup to and avoid going to the beach or somewhere really sunny for the coming week so your skin can heal. Another thing to take into account is you shouldn't really go for microderm if you are in the middle of a breakout it's best to wait till at least your pimples are healing or better yet gone.

Microdermabrasion freak me out slightly and I've never tried a peel. Facials are fairly far down on the to do list, I struggle to find time to cleanse my face let alone take time off to relax and have a facial.

This sounds amazing -I have only ever done home exfoliation.I had a normal facial at a salon once and it made my skin feel great so it would be lovely to try this.

I really want to try both but just cannot justify the spend. I've actually been wanting a chemical peel for years to reduce the scaring I have around my chin.
