Take a moment to think of all the technology we have in our lives that take what used to be long, arduous tasks and made them simpler... Off the top of my head I can think of the washing machine, the dishwasher, the microwave and the car. Those four pieces of machinery have made washing clothing and dishes easier, defrosting food faster, and getting about from place to place more efficient. I appreciate them all, in fact you could say I love them, and yet when I read about a new piece of technology - the Clockwork manicure machine - I felt a sense of discomfort.
According to the website, the Clockwork manicure machine is the world's first nail-painting robot, that is designed to give your nails a lick of colour in less than ten minutes. Aside from speed, the benefits touted include: not needing a lot of space, more sales per square foot for the business owner and, due to its contactless nature, it's safer in these Covid times. All benefits I understand and can get on board with. However, what left me feeling uncomfortable was the lack of soul.
Part of the joy of going to get your nails done is the chance to connect with another person; to chat about your day with your nail technician and/or the person who's getting their nails done next to you. A manicure isn't the same as getting a pap smear - something you want over and done with as quickly and efficiently as possible - it's a treat. It's self care. It's pamper time. I love choosing a colour before sitting down to have my nails tidied, filed and buffed, before watching the nail technician perfectly paint the polish on. Oh, and if there's a hand massage in there, I'm extra happy, and I know for a fact that a machine can't massage the way a human can...
You see, I once did a few session on a full body massage roller machine, and while it was nice, in no way did it feel anywhere near as good, or hit the spots that needed the extra work, in the way a pair of trained human hands could, and I feel that even if a manicure machine could massage, it would in no way be anywhere near the same or as enjoyable as what a pair of hands attached to a living, breathing human can do.
As for intricate nail designs? There's no sign of the manicure robot being able to do that...yet.
While I can appreciate that there are those who don't want to deal with people, who want a quick polish inbetween appointments, for me, it's a no. I'm all about the real deal. Give me a cosy salon, with cool music playing, and a smiling face any day of the week. That's my idea of nailing it.

I'm all for machines to help out but not steal an entire job!;
