I've not really been a toner girl before, but I can now see the benefit after using this Thayers Facial Toner as part of a BR trial. I received the unscented formula, which was a good match for my sensitive skin. The witch hazel & aloe vera were soothing & cooling and definitely not drying as some other types I've tried previously. My pores appeared smaller after 2 weeks of use, and skin smoother & feels more hydrated. The plastic bottle has 355ml of product (retails for around $16 at Chemist Warehouse), but I hardly used any, as a little goes a long way on a cotton ball, makeup pad or even just splashing it on your face. I reckon I'd get a good 6-8 months out of this bottle, using it 1-2 times a day. Or, put some into a spray bottle to spritz on your face during the day, if not wearing makeup. Overall, pleasantly surprised & I'll keep using. Especially with working from home & not wearing much if any makeup- it makes my skin feel fresh & hydrated. But I've also noticed that foundation seems to be easier to apply and stays on longer, so maybe this is also a result of using a toner?

Tips: Don't squeeze the bottle when you're pouring the toner onto your cotton ball/ pad - a little goes a looong way :)
I confess I haven’t used a toner regularly for a long time so was interested to see if this improved pore size especially around my nose area. As the product claims it is unscented and felt like water on my face. There was no irritation but felt slightly refreshing. Good to see this product is alcohol, paraben and phthalate free. Not sure why it would be gluten free as you wouldn’t drink it but good I guess if you were very allergic. The container is too large for a makeup purse so a smaller pack size would work well for travelling purposes. One disappointing aspect I felt was the lid as it didn’t close tightly and could potentially leak if packed lying down. I did feel there was an improvement in pore size even after using for only a couple of weeks.
Tips: Apply directly after cleansing using finger tips or cotton ball.
I didn’t apply for this trial team as my life has been chaotic with a lot of travel. But when I was offered it, I went for it as the travel and flying has also been chaos for my skin. I didn’t think it would be great, I didn’t have high hopes of it being any better than any toners I currently use. And it is just a toner. But not all toners are created equal, and this one will now sit proudly alongside my other beauty products and come with me on trips in a mini bottle, ready to refresh and renew my skin and my feelings. It’s cool and fresh, it clears my skin without drying or stripping the good stuff. My skin can be quite sensitive at times but this product did not cause any irritation or reaction. It helped when my skin was verging on breaking out during that time of the month and calmed and soothed and helped prevent the breakout. Don’t be put off by the apothecary look. It’s like a cult classic icon product that should be a staple for all.
I've given this product quite low scores. It was totally inoffensive, I just didn't find it really added any value nor did it deliver on it's promises.
The packaging is a flexible plastic bottle with plastic flip top lid. The lid doesn't click closed very well and I think if this tipped over I'd expect it to leak. The colour and label design are appealing in a vintage kind of way.
On application: I'm the first to say I don't generally use toner in my routine. The toners I'm used to (from my teen years) all stung a bit and left my skin feeling sort of stripped. This doesn't do either of those things, which was a pleasant surprise. It felt gentle and cooling on application, dried quickly, and didn't have any noticeable smell or residue. To be honest, it was like wiping my face with a bit of water.
After effects: I used this product twice daily through the review period. During this time, I didn't really experience any improvement in texture, skin tone, or pore size. If anything it left me shiny throughout the day.
On the balance of things this just didn't impress, unfortunately!
Tips: If you run out of cotton balls / swabs / pads, you can apply a bit to the corner of a facecloth for similar results.
This is the first time I've tried this brand, Thayers. Comes in a very easy to use bottle and in a generous sized bottle for the price. A nicely soaked cotton pad left my skin feeling clean and toned and the witch hazel does.give a nice smoothness. The best part that the aleovera range has no scent and all the toners are alcohol free. The toner does do what it's supposed to do, all the while leaving my skin hydrated. Although not the best with waterproof eyeliners and mascaras but again that is expected as this is a toner and not makeup remover.
Very affordable and great toner. Highly recommended.
For starters, this toner is in a huge bottle! Great value for money - thinking about cost per use. I have now used this both morning and night after cleansing. It is a very liquid texture, so I squirt it onto a reusable cotton pad and sweep it over my skin. I have sensitive skin, but this unscented toner didn't irritate my skin or make it flare up in any way. Unfortunately I have had a big breakout around my chin and mouth before using this product, so I cannot comment on it's balancing aspect. However, my skin is not left feeling dry after using this toner, rather it feels fairly refreshed. I think I will be continuing to use this toner to see the effects claimed: visibly smoother skin, smaller appearing pores and more even skin tone.
Tips: Use on a soft reusable cotton pad
Thayers Unscented Toner was interesting from the get-go. The label and style of bottle gives it that authentic, old school sort of vibe. Having ingredients grown in the town that it is made, 98% natural ingredients, vegan, cruelty free, no alcohol formula sure makes one feel like they're doing the right thing by choosing Thayers. Having very sensitive skin myself, I was admittedly a little apprehensive using a toner every day for this review as I have never used one on a regular basis before. I found it being unscented helpful, using a make up remover pad to apply, it was smooth, light and non-oily which was nice. I used this daily for the past week and aside from seeing residue which my cleanser obviously left behind using this toner, I couldn't really see much of a difference in this time. However, my skin has been rather oily this week. Could it be the season? Could it be the toner? It is hard to tell considering having only a week to write this review and based on not having used a toner before nor paid much attention to how my face feels every day it seems a little unfair to blame Thayers toner. I would like to continue to use Thayers Unscented Alcohol Free Toner with Witch Hazel & Aloe Vera as it might give me a fair idea of its long term benefits.
Tips: Use after cleansing with a cotton make up remover pad.
I’ve had mixed success with adding various toners to my routine over the years due to skin sensitivity and am yet to find one I would happy repurchase again and again.
The Thayers Unscented Alcohol-Free Toner with Witch Hazel Aloe Vera has a vegan formula, and is gluten, phthalate and paraben free.
The bottle, although plastic, has a label which implies the brand has heritage, and it’s a large bottle which will last months for a low price.
I’ve been using a reusable crocheted pad to apply the toner twice a day after cleansing, before my serum and moisturiser, and have found it to be gentle yet effective. The formula offers antioxidant benefits and can smooth skin, make pores appear smaller and even out skin tone, and I guess I’m seeing some signs of this.
I appreciate the lack of scent and love that that the entire range of Thayers toners are alcohol free and non-drying as it didn’t leave my skin feeling tight, tingly or dried out. It does what it says on the bottle without massively astounding me.
Tips: Unfortunately I find using toner to be an easily forgotten step - often slathering on serum after cleansing and realising I’ve neglected the toner. I recommend placing the bottle in front of your serums to overcome this!
I suffer from red cheeks and forehead, this is often bumpy like acne as well. I have been using this toner morning and night for around a week now - there is a noticeable improvement- the redness is now only on my cheeks and there is no bumps. The bottle says it moisturizes- so I did try using just that. My skin doesn't feel dry at all, so it works perfectly well alone but for personal preference I will continue using this alongside cleanser and moisturizer.
The product itself looks like water and smells like water. However the slight tingle when applying assures me it is not in fact water. I imagine it will last a long time as you don't need alot on the cotton pad to cover your whole face and neck.
If I'm being picky and trying to find negatives all I can say is the packaging is bit bland- but again that's just personal preference.
Tips: This would be great for traveling (in a smaller bottle perhaps) to help freshen up om a long trip as it doesn't dry out your skin so no moisturizer is needed
I was really nervous using this, I have really sensitive skin and some toners can make my skin feel too tight and too dry. This surprised me. I have really enjoyed the feeling of my skin following using thus and I am going to keep using it, hoping to see some more progress in closing up some of the troublesome pores!
