A great beginners palette

I purchased this palette from splashstore about a month ago- kind of exciting since it hadn't quite hit other stores in NZ yet. The concept with the palette is that it is sorted into quads or trios so that you can do complete eye looks and it will coordinate with each other. The trios or quad combo's are shown in diagrams on the back of the palette which really takes the work out of deciding which colour will go with which. The pigmentation of this palette is not the most amazing, particularly for some of the matte shades, but it is pigmented enough that you can easily build up an eyeshadow look from more natural to more of a dramatic look which I like. I found the shadows to be really easily to apply and to blend. The only negatives I really found with this palette is that some of the shades are a bit similar to each other, and there is only a couple of shades I could use in the crease as this tended towards the more shimmery shades. Still, this is a great and totally affordable option particularly if you are just starting to build up your makeup collection. Would absolutely recommend this to others.

Thank you for answering all my questions (in my head haha). I'm with Lutece - I will be giving this one a pass as well, even though Sophie did an amazing look with the palette.

Not THAT kinda nude!

For me, the term 'nude' conjured up the image of wearing nothing at all, and that may be why I have avoided nudes until now...boooooo-ring! But when BR emailed me with the superhero task force offer to trial this palette (from a company I've often had good results from!), I had to say yes. This product has been hyped, and so I figured it would be a good place to start! Plus, I was on my way back from a dream trip to Japan and needed a new focus...perfect! (Thanks, BR xx)

The Maybelline The Nudes Palette comes packaged in a sleek black case with a clear window through which you can easily see the 12 shades. There is a plastic sleeve around this when you first pick it up, which has info on Quads, Trios and Duos from the product which go together. Interestingly this same information is on the back of the actual case - but it's different there, and the one on the plastic sleeve makes more sense. Typo? Confused packager? Not sure, but don't throw out the sleeve!

The palette tends towards shimmers in the lightest shades, with a couple of matte bone/taupe shades thrown in, and more matte darker colours from a mid brown through to a black.

I used all three quads, then went back to a couple of the colours that suited me better to trial this for brows, lips, and as an under-cheekbone contour. I found that using the guides helped, but instinct also helps, and if you like two colours together then they are worth a go! There is a golden shimmery shade 3 in on the bottom row that I love for inner eye and upper central lid as it really pops the gold flecks in my hazel eyes.

This is a multi-use palette, but it can't do everything – I still used base, liner, mascara etc as normal.

I haven't tested this on a full work day yet... my workdays can get up to 13 hours though :S However, I've worn the shades 4 days in a row and I'm happy with how they've lasted through a chill holiday time where I've put my makeup on closer to lunchtime than breakfast! They've also helped make me look less jetlagged and more myself!

When I applied the shadows as lip colour (over a clear gloss) they adhered exceptionally well and I was really impressed. When applied as a contour you need to blend them out with your face powder to avoid a line. On the eyes, they blend nicely. I've heard people complain about the pigmentation but I feel it's adequate for a nude palette, especially as the colour is buildable and easy to work with.

In short, I'm really impressed with this palette. I'm a 'brights and darks' girl and this was my first real foray into nudes, and I like that you can go softer or more dramatic with this palette depending on your mood. I think the shades are really well thought out and complement each other (and me!) well. I would recommend this to most people but feel that it might be too much of a range for a beginner, especially as the instructions are a little confusing with being non matching.

Tips: Use the right brushes. I used a blending brush for the 'entire eye area' and 'lid' shades, then a thinner, stiffer brush for the crease and edge of lid, and an angled brush for eyeliner and brows. It makes a huge difference.

Fabulous beginners palette

I was lucky enough to get to trial this as a superhero challenge. Thanks BR x Now I have to be honest with a couple of things. I've been so sick and applying makeup is the last thing on my mind. I tried to soldier on. At first this palette really annoyed me. Let me explain...

So the packaging I really like. It's compact, sturdy and looks classy. It closes with a click and is quite stiff to release. Great for travel. I love how you can see the colours through the clear peak lid and the logo is simple yet classy.

As soon as I got it I swatched on my arm. I won't lie I was really disappointed at first. I was swiping and swiping to try and build the colour up. It's not very pigmented. I took photos of the swatches inside and out to see how the colours changed. They are really really pretty colours. This I loved! It annoyed me the colours didn't seem very pigmented. I kept playing on my arm and figured out keep building the colour up to make deeper. Sweet I like this now.

The shadows have different textures I quickly found. A couple seem to be a bit more crumbly, there are a couple that are creamy and others a normal pressed texture. I like how they are different. I love how there are shimmer and flat and matte colours.

So to apply I didn't use the applicator that came with it as I prefer brushes. Now I found with other palettes you swipe the brush once or twice and you have ample colour. These you really need to build up as you go which is fantastic for people learning about applying eye shadow.

The "nude" name is perfect as the whole palette is so easy to create a soft nude no makeup look or build up for a deeper nude brown smokey look. I've been really happy with the looks I have managed to create. I've used the colours as eye shadow (obviously), highlighter for strobing, contour, brow filler and eyeliner. I struggled using it as a contour as you can only use a fine brush to pick up the colour and apply to your face, then you need to blend blend blend to hide the stripe lines. Be great if the contour and highlight colours were 2 times the size pans.

If I had seen this in a store and I had swatched in store I absolutely wouldn't have brought it. As I was dedicated to the challenge I kept playing at home and i actually really like it now. So for me it's a don't judge the book by the cover. What I don't like is it doesn't have names of the shadows written on the compact. Small thing.

I'd totally recommend this for a teenagers first palette, to someone wanting to try a smokey eye but not into bold looks yet, to a business professional.

Tips: If you get this play, build up the colours and have fun with it. Read the BR article for tips as well

Perfect for beginners (and everyone else!)

I was so excited to trial this product thanks to BR. My first impressions of the case were good. The palette seemed smaller than I had imagined it to be, but it was nice and sleek looking. I liked that you could see all the colours through the clear window, but I do wish it came with a mirror. It was helpful that the packaging came with detailed instructions showing which colour combinations would work best together, and where each shade should be applied. This makes it perfect for first time eyeshadow users.

The palette comes with a sponge applicator, but I suggest you chuck it and use proper eyeshadow brushes. There are 12 shades ranging from shimmery to matte. It is easy to get both day and night looks out of these shades. For the most part they were well-pigmented and they blended easily. Some of the lighter shades required a few layers, but aside from that they worked well. I also found that the darker colours applied a lot smoother and felt more velvety, while the lighter shades were a bit powdery. The colours definitely lasted longer and were more pigmented when paired with an eyelid primer. However if you don’t use a primer it’s not a big deal, as it should still last all day.

My favourite thing about this palette is that it has more than one purpose. I used it to fill in my eyebrows and found that it worked just as well as other eyebrow fillers. It can also be used as a contour and highlight.

Overall I really enjoyed this eyeshadow palette. I would definitely repurchase this again. This was my first time trying nude eyeshadows and now it is part of my daily makeup routine. If you are just getting into makeup or eyeshadow, I seriously recommend this product for you. It is affordable and great for experimenting with.

Highly recommend this palette - surprising results

While travelling, I picked up this palette. As a fan of nudes and other palettes, I thought this would be a great product to try - and I was right!

This palette is so versatile with 12 shades (variety of bronze, browns, champagnes, and taupes). It ended up being the only eyeshadow I used for three weeks, and I never tired of the looks I could create.

While I tend to use more expensive palettes, I was curious if these eyeshadows could stand up to them, and they did surprisingly well.

The palette is shorter than others I have, but wider, with smaller square pans, however, after three weeks of continuous use, they still look full.

The shadows are soft, and there's a mix of matte and shimmer. And surprisingly, the darker shades were quite pigmented. The lighter ones not so much, and I really had to work them to get coverage, but the light shades are beautiful colours so it was worth it.

Highly recommend giving this a try, I think you'll be surprised by the quality.

A good first beginners palette

I was lucky enough to get to trial this palette and was very excited to have a play with a new palette. I love nude/brown eyeshadows so always on the lookout for any new products.

Firstly I thought the packaging was quite good - the case was sturdy and I liked how it was compact - perfect for travel if you have limited space but still want to bring a range of shadows. I tried swatches of all the colours and felt like some of them took a bit to build up a good colour, they weren't as pigmented as some of the more expensive palettes I own.

I used an eye primer (urban decay) to make the shadows stay on my lid and wore them all day - at the end of the day there was a small amount of creasing which does not normally happen when using my eye primer so a bit disappointed about that.

I enjoyed the majority of the colours - some of them were quite similar but in different finishes (sparkly, matte). I thought it was a good range for a basic nude palette and you could do many looks with the palette from day time makeup to a more smokey eye for night.

Overall I think this product would be good for someone wanting to buy their first palette for an affordable price. You can't go past 30 bucks for 12 eyeshadows it really is a bargain.

I will probably use this palette again to go travelling with especially as you can use the matte brown as a good eyebrow shadow which makes it multipurpose.

Tips: I would recommend using an eye primer to help the shadow stay on longer. The matte brown can be used on eyebrows too.

The Nudes...

Straight away I give this a product 10 out of 10! Could be that I'm a beginner when it come to Palettes or could just be that I find it simply stunning and easy to work with!

I received it on a Friday morning and by Midday I had it on!

The packaging is great, I really like how it comes with the wee plastic glove over the compact. On the back of the plastic glove it shows the Duos, Trios and Quads and where they should go upon the eyelid. The compact with the shades in is sturdy and tightly sealed. The wee see through window on the front is Cute, I would love to see it have a wee mirror on the inside for when you're out and about. I'm not a big fan of the brush it comes with, it didn't pick up the amount I needed and didn't serve its purpose in the looks I tried to create. My advice use an eye shadow brushes and blender if you have these x

The colours them selves are simple and stunning. I found using different techniques to apply them to the eyelid made them stand out more at times than others ie using the brush provided they come out quite light, using my own makeup brush they came out darker.

Now for the first two attempts I didn't have a brush to blend the looks together, I used the middle quad and found even though I didn't blend they still sat nicely together when just applied with a brush.

For being a newbie to Palettes I liked the info on the back about what should go where. For my first try I did what it said, it worked great. For beginners I think this is a really cool feature on the product to have it's really helpful. Eventually I got brave and changed things up using just the shades I wanted too and they still looked great together.

From shimmers to Matte shades, you can create any look. From an everyday makeup look to a Smokey eye going out look. What's even better?? I used it to fill my eyebrows in to give them more definition!

All in all I love this product, I will continue to use it. Thank you BR and Maybelline for introducing me into the world of Palettes. this product for me is ACE!

Tips: I found having my own brush to apply the eye shadow much more handy than the one provided x

Not the best but it's okay

My first impressions of the palette is that it looked very sleek & elegant, no unnecessary bulk or packaging. It was love at first sight but the first time I used it I was disappointed there was no mirror as I prefer to use a hand mirror when applying eye shadow. At first glance I thought the colours of the shadows were gorgeous & a good variety for creating a lot of neutral looks. I really loved the narrow ends of the sponge brush which I used to smudge the eye shadow to create a smokey effect & helped to intensify & add definition on the lower lash & inner eye area.

I liked the "how to use" duos, trios, quads demonstrations on the bottom of the palette which I thought would be really helpful for beginners and for those people who aren't really familiar with using more than 1 eye shadow, it's really good to have that direction of what to do. Also the placing of the eye shadows in the palette is a very well thought-out concept of mixing & matching.

Due to the fact that the eye shadows aren't highly pigmented or glittery I can't recommend using an eye shadow primer enough, it'll help bring out & make the colours last a lot longer. However something to think about & maybe the direction where Maybelline was heading with this product... Do you really want over the top sparkles with a nude palette? After all when I think of "nude" it makes me think of a product that enhances your natural beauty not a product that is designed to dress you up as a Vegas showgirl.

I found most of the shimmery shades to be creamy in texture but sheer once blended (again, not highly pigmented), the downside is that the matte shades were a bit difficult to blend, they were chalky/powdery and were a bit more challenging to get the desired look. I did find using a more dense brush in a patting motion worked a little better but still had to work at blending more than I would have with any other palette. I didn't like the black in the palete, it's not the blackest of blacks.. more like a ashy black/grey.

I am some what impressed with this palette, it's great having a variety of colours where you can be creative while enhancing your natural look however I do not think it is worth $30. No mirror, a little stiff & awkward to open and the textures of the eye shadows didn't perform as well I would have expected from Maybelline.

A classy number

I was fortunate to trial this product from BR. This is a stylish nude palette filled with colours to suit every skin tone. I liked the different eye look combinations illustrated on the back of the packaging; however I found I was selecting my own combinations that I thought worked with my eyes and skin tone. I always use a primer with any eye colour but I noticed you do need to build up the colour and blend. Some of the lighter shades didn’t really show up and some shades were a bit powdery. On the flip side some of the shades were beautifully pigmented and had a smooth blendable finish that lasted. I did use the sponge applicator that came with the palette which I think is a reasonable quality and I also used my own eye brushes when applying. Overall I like this palette, I am reaching for it daily and it’s been living in my makeup bag. It’s an all-round palette which has something to suit everyone and gives the opportunity to create some stunning eye looks.

Tips: If you can try and swatch this first to make sure you are happy with the colours and finishes.

Nice palette

This palette is really quite lovely, the colours in the range are gorgeous. Good mix of shimmery vs matte shades. I really liked how the palette is set up in a logical/complimentary way for you to use colours as duos, trios or quads. The packaging is nice and sturdy, but didn't like the brush (usually dont though). I recommend applyin with a proper eyeshadow bristly brush. In terms of staying power - I tried this on it's own with no base, and it creased within a couple of hours. (this my reason for a 4/5 rather tahn 5/5). I also tried it using the maybelline colour tattoo white shade as the base, and it really helped with the staying power. Using the right brush so you can pack it on will help as well. I am happy with this product and I am sure I will get awesome use out of it!

Tips: Use an eyeshadow base & proper brush to apply.
