I received a sample of the Black Opium from Farmers a while ago and was sufficiently impressed to return and purchase a bottle - size was 30 ml and retail price was $113.00. The box is black and gold and embossed with the YS which is slightly 'glitterised' and impressive. The bottle is extremely elegant and impressive. I am not a fan of Opium but discovered that this was a completely different fragrance and not as heady or spicy as the original. It was a warm floral undertone, and a sweet, light spicy undertone. I don't think it is light enough for me to wear during the day and would be inclined to wear it in the evenings. Very sexy fragrance!

Tips: Spray a little on the bedside light bulb and when the lights go on it permeates the room.
I’ll begin by saying, I never expected to like this perfume. When I heard about its release, I didn’t even flutter an eyelid. I was basing my excitement on the previous versions of Opiums.. the one my mum uses and a smell I myself don’t enjoy. But when I heard about a free sample of this at farmers I had to get my hands on it! What can I say, I love free stuff.
The sample was tiny, but enough to wear the scent for a few days and get the feeling of how it smelt on my skin. Let me just say after the first spray, I was hooked.
I love everything about this perfume. They packaging I think is aimed at a younger audience, being pinky metallic gold, and black! The box is very elegant, and is the first perfume box I haven’t thrown out immediately after buying a perfume, and it has the YSL logo in a raised glittery text. The bottle itself reflects the box, being black, and textured with a glittery appearance. I thought this looked so fun, and girly-I’m a girl who thinks a girl can never have too much sparkles. It has a clear circle in the middle of the bottle which lets you see the pink perfection inside and so far.. even after daily use, I still can’t see the perfume level dropping! I brought the 30 ml from Farmers which retails for $113.
Now to the smell I fell in love with. When I first spray this, I get a hint of coffee. It’s not overpowering, it does not smell like you tipped coffee on yourself. It just a beautiful hint of coffee that last moments before I smell the sweetness of vanilla coming through. I find the mixes of these two notes are really pleasant because it takes away the sweetness from the vanilla, and doesn’t leave the sickly vanilla smell that some perfumes have. I would describe this scent as feminine, and it almost has delicateness about it. I use a couple of sprays In the morning, and I just love the smell. Honestly if I could afford to I would probably fill my bathtub up with this stuff and just douse myself in it! The thing is, I cant actually smell this on myself after an hour, because I think im used to the smell now so I occasionally do a spray throughout the day just to top up the smell.
I can’t recommend this perfume because everyone has different perfumes tastes, and perfumes smell differently to everyone! However, I can’t describe in words how much I love this perfume and if you have similar tastes to me in perfumes (flower bomb and dolce and gabbana being other favourites of mine), then I do think you should try this!!
Tips: If your interesting in trying this, ask for a sample at farmers. Not sure if they still have any but worth a try
After hearing a bit of buzz about samples of this being given away, I asked a friend if I could try their sample. It was sent to me as they didn't like it.
One squirt and I was sold! It was totally unlike anything I have ever tried before. It smelt sexy, romantic yet very adult.
I took the leap of faith and brought the 100ml size. Again another BR friend was so kind to get it for me and send to me as I'm rural. Getting to shopping centres is tricky for me at the moment.
The box it came in oozed glamour! The bottle is a statement. Think of that romantic night you go out in your sexy black dress, with your loved one beside you in a tux kind of glamour! The lid is like his top hat. The circle is clear and you can see the magical liquid inside. Just a peek as to not give away the secret. The bottle is heavy and needs to be shown off.
When you press to release the delicious fragrance it's like being wrapped in a warm embrace. I can smell coffee and vanilla. It makes me want to hug my husband and press my nose into his neck as I can smell the warm fragrance encircle the both of us.
To me it's a romantic night out treat. Once we are all dressed up and going out, the looks I swap with my husband, the YSL Opium warming up the evening, is the final touch of romance.
Dessert is chocolate as this is a sweet smell. Vanilla, coffee, chocolate and my husband is a perfect combo.
Don't get me wrong, I love to wear this on many occasions. To me this one would be the number one use. It lasts me all day. I sprits it all over my clothing and not my skin. Perfumes cause irritations and can't be worn on my skin. You only need a max of 4 sprays for the full on strong effect.
Highly recommend it
This is one of those perfumes where after one sniff you're hooked! I was lucky enough to grab a small vial sample from Farmers when it was first released and knew in an instance that I had to own this perfume. Lucky for me the hubby loved it and so paid for me to get a 50ml bottle as part of my Christmas present.
Its a grown up perfume and has the ability to make you feel all feminine and sexy which was confirmed by the attention it attracted from my hubby.
It comes in a super sexy bottle too, decked out in black with sparkles on the body of its glass bottle, with a small glass circle at its belly so you can see how your quantity is going, this glass is slightly tinted pink. It has a easy to use ball topper lid that I have found if you accidently drop onto your makeup table will roll right off!!
Now how to describe the fragrance, its dark with hints of magic and musk. I think of dark ripe cherries, lilacs in a evening sunset, old romantic movies, there just seems to be a few different scents all playing beautifully together. With a burst of warmth from a musky vanilla and touches of coffee just hitting lightly on top of the darker floral my nose detects. Its good, so damn good!! I want to bathe in it.
Being a YSL product you know what you are paying for, its a high priced tagged item for a high quality fragrance. Its not a everyday perfume as it is more suited for evenings out, dates nights or special occasions. Only a small squirt is needed as it warms up with your body and lingers for a good few hours without losing much of its original smell. I have found personally that after wearing this for a night out that I wake up the next morning with the most lush musky vanilla scent over me which can only be the leftover perfume that has mellowed on my body during my sleep.
Wow wow wow after reading the great reviews here I went to my local farmers to try it for myself and fell in love straight away and brought the 50ml bottle for $170.
The bottle says it all it is black with blue glittery sparkles over the black. It is gorgeous it makes you want to wear your little black dress and your sparkly shoes. That is what the bottle reminds me of. It also has a pink circle in the centre which has black opium and the trademark Yves Saint Laurent stamped on it.
This very sweet alluring fragrance has you hooked as soon as you first spray it. Instantly I can smell pepper and spice then you can smell vanilla and patchouli and a musk and topped off with a tiny hint of espresso coffee that has just been freshly extracted from the coffee machine.
The longer I wear it the more it mellows. The spice and pepper seems to fade and I think this is where a tiniest hint of orange comes through and definitely more of the vanilla comes through. It is Devine! This lasts on me throughout the day and I think it is the perfect scent for the cooler months ahead. It makes you feel warm and cozy. Like a long cold winters night and your inside with the fire going and you are all snuggled into your man.
Even my partner who is a real manly man that doesn't take any interest in anything beauty related said that smells good quite vanilla-ry as soon as I sprayed it. Which said a lot to me that he noticed it and liked it
I was given a small sample bottle of Black Opium at Farmers and I LOVE it! I have been looking for a fragrance that makes me feel confident and sexy on a night out and this is it!
It is sexy, sweet, seductive and warm all in one! I have been using the same perfume for years and have only just started looking for something a little more 'grown up' but something that i still love the smell of and feel sexy and feminine in! Something that I can spritz on myself as the final touch to a perfect outfit!
My partner loved it and commented on how sexy I smelt every time I wore it and has promised to get me a bottle for my upcoming birthday and I cannot wait!
I am drawn the the delicious vanilla smell of it mixed with a hint of coffee and a floral undertone, it is such a treat to my nostrils! When I wear it, I just feel like a movie star - like that is what a movie star would wear on the red carpet!
Words can not describe how amazing this fragrance smells . This is what heaven would smell like.
The packaging is beautiful, I'm not one for glitter but this bottle looks classy.
To be honest when I heard YSL are bringing out a new opium I couldn't care less... Until I smelt it. I must admit on me it smells like vanilla which is a scent I love but I've notice guys also love this scent as I've been complement I smell good. At lest I think it's a complement.
I must admit it is a bit pricey but it's worth the money. If you haven't smelt it go to your nearest fragrance or ysl counter and ask to smell it who knows they might have a sample.
Tips: Don't knock it till you try it on yourself.
This fragrance is like no other. I'm usually a sweet/floral type of fragrance girl. But I was walking past the fragrance area at Farmers when this had just been spritzed. I had to stop and do a double take and ask what it was. One word, WOW. It completely caught my attention, which is what you want when wearing a fragrance. Needless to say I had to get my hands on it and have it in my life.
This fragrance has got coffee and vanilla notes and is truly one of a kind and makes you feel sexy when you wear it. I purchased the 50ml bottle for around $170. ($230 for the 100ml was out of my price range at the time) Totally worth it! It's the fragrance I've always been looking for. Even though it is COMPLETELY different to something I'd normally wear. It has a sort of warm feel to it. Perfect for night time or winter but I wear mine all year round. It's so yummy! I own a lot of fragrances but this one is my absolute favorite.
I'm not a huge fan of the bottle it comes in, but it's not too bad. Apart from that, 10/10 would recommend!
One of the good "Vanilla Oriental" perfumes. This type of perfume is my favourite, if I was to compair it to another perfume it would be a less sweet and strong version of angel. The perfume starts off with hints of floral but the vanilla shines threw on me. Around 4 sprays lasts 5/6 hours on me and still lingers, I only respray as I like a stronger smell, but this si personal preferance. I have the 30ml bottle and it was a gift so not sure of the price, I know it was around $100. The bottle is beautiful, the traditional opium design but with black glitter! Whats not to love.
I received a sample of this at Myers in Australia. Personally I cannot find any resemblance to the original Opium in this fragrance whatsoever. To me this scent smells like a love child of Black XS, Flower Bomb and Jovan Black musk. A fruity-patchouli. I was worried when I saw coffee mentioned as a note as personally I don't want to smell like a beverage but I didn't notice it. I did get some berry notes, leather/suede, burnt sugar and patchouli but nothing wowed me about this. The bottle on display was also covered in glitter which personally I found quite tacky. I would have expected that this may have had a more oriental base hence it's association with the original but like the Belle variant which was released a couple of years ago this is a completely different scent geared towards a modern audience. Too overwhelmingly sweet and burnt sugar smelling for my nose. If you delve in expecting a scent like the original opium you are bound to be disappointed.
