So, a little bit of background to start off with...my hair is super curly, frizzy if I dont use product, very dry especially at the turn of the season and unruly at the best of times. I have searched, unsuccessfully, for years for a product that isnt too heavy but that will have give my hair some control. Usually the products I've tried are either so heavy that it makes my hair limp and oily, or at the other end of the scale, only lasts a week because I have to use so much.
Last week my much anticipated package arrived in the mail...eeekkk I was sooo excited! I immediately opened it, and to be honest, I was a little bit disappointed, the bottle wasnt huge, about 10cm in height, (my initial thought was..mmmm this wont take long to use as my hair sucks up product) and there was no smell. In my mind hair product had to smell gorgeous. My disappointment didn't last long.
Ok, now for the Verdict...Caithy Marula Enriched Hair Oil is the answer to all of my hair problems! On opening the unassuming brown bottle I discovered that there was a stopper in the top, like you find on essential oil bottles, so when I tipped it up hardly any came out, literally 3 or 4 drops landed in my hand. I thought...how on Earth is this going to be enough?? Well, it was! This product is amazing, I needed very little to achieve healthy, shiny beautiful looking hair...I was truly surprised. I have now been using Caithy Marula Enriched Hair Oil for almost a week and Im hooked. It doesnt feel oily or heavy in your hair, you wont need to wash your hair more often to counteract the build up of product either, it feels light yet healthy. $80 seems quite a lot to pay for a hair product, but honestly, you need so little of it it will last months and I have finally found the perfect product so I would pay this willingly. I have also decided that smell doesn't matter, it doesn't smell bad, there is just none which is fine. So basically Im beyond happy, I will continue to buy this slightly expensive, aromaless Hair Oil in the unassuming brown bottle because it gives me healthy luscious locks that I feel proud of.
I was given this product by BR to trial (thank you!). With regular use and more time I feel it can help to improve the condition of my hair. To start I have long wavy hair, prone to dandruff, balayage with Keratin treatment and a good hair care regime in place.
I think for $80 the packaging needs some work. It has an inverted dropper which dispenses the product one drop at a time. On first use it took me a few firm shakes to get any product and when I did, I had to check that I didn't get it anywhere else but on my hand! By day 3 I removed it and used an external dropper to get the job done - much faster and less mess.
The oil smells like a mix of Olive oil and Castor oil. It's not overpowering but if it's in my hair I'd really like it to smell pleasant. Using no more than 8 drops I tested this product by applying the oil to dry hair that had been styled, partially dry hair, wet hair and lastly dry hair before styling.
Despite being an oil I was impressed that in all four scenarios it didn't feel greasy or leave any oily residue behind; in fact I felt like it helped me in that area. There were times where I felt like it LOOKED greasy however colleagues / friends told me I needed my eyes checked.
I was worried that having oil in my hair would transfer onto my pillow and break me out because I have sensitive skin but I had no issues. In addition I was also worried that the oil would make my dandruff worse however I found that my dandruff was under control to the point that I had to keep checking the mirror to see if it was even real!
Out of all the applications I preferred to apply the oil to dry hair that had already been styled (i.e. curled). It's a nice 'retouch' to the hair, smoothing it out while conditioning and softening my tips. My problem with this application was that my curled hair seemed to go limp and lose its volume - had I put too much? Surely not.
With the partially dry and wet hair my hair appeared more straw-like. It didn't feel straw-like it just looked rather stringy and evident that it had product in it. I put my hair in a bun in both cases and noticed that the flyaways were not that easy to get rid of so it's important to note that the product smooths your hair but doesn't necessary keep the flyaways down.
The application I hated the most is the one mentioned on the product - applying the oil (on dry hair I assume) and then styling. After applying the oil, I straightened my hair but half way through I gave up. Instead of looking polished and clean it was looking like I had "straightened" my hair in a rush and looking rather stiff not to mention the degree of satin shine (and not the good type). I then tried to curl it and was super annoyed when it fell limp. Needless to say up in a bun it went.
Overall I'm impressed with the properties of this product and I intend to finish using it and update my review accordingly.
Tips: Unfortunately the "directions" doesn't recommend the ideal number of drops to use and neither does their website so I can only assume that I had the right amount of product given my hair type and how much hair I have.
Start with a small number of drops and add more as needed. Rub hands together to warm up product and apply to your scalp. Section your hair off (I split it into 4s) and apply the oil - in total I use 8 drops of oil on my long wavy hair.
