I have a decent amount of greys to cover these days and L'Oreal once again gives me the tools I need to succeed. This easy to use product is available in a bunch of locations and gives me the bright vibrant hair colour I love. Like any box dye, it does smell for the first couple of days till you can rewash and get that fresh dyed hair smell to go away. The price point is great considering I have nearly waist length, thick hair and need a few boxes to get its all covered.

Tips: Make sure you buy enough colour to really saturate your hair, its better to apply more, than to risk dry patches.
I have used this dye in Scarlet Intense Red and twice in the shade Havana Brown 6.51. I used to dye my hair red and out of all the brands of red dye I used, the L'Oreal Preference Scarlet dye earned me the most compliments. It was a lovely red shade with purple undertones and when it said permanent, it meant permanent, I haven't dyed my hair red for 6 months and from that dye it is still stubbornly red. Compared to other red dyes it didn't fade or wash out too much. Application with the red dye was a nightmare though, it seemed to splatter everywhere in the bathroom and stained the floor and it is hard to wash it out of your hair when you are supposed to rinse the dye out, it doesn't want to budge. Havana Brown is a lovely caramel shade, I have used it twice and have been impressed with how well it went over my red hair and how natural it looked. Havana Brown seems to apply and rinse out of my hair a lot easier than the scarlet shade did. The preference dye smells quite strong and the scent lingers on my hair after washing my hair, so if you don't like hair dye fumes, this isn't for you. The dye comes with black gloves that actually fit but they do tear easily. The bonus of the dye is it comes with a decent sized tube of colour conditoner that lasts me for about 7 weeks each time and I wash my hair 2-3 times a week. Overall, I will always go back to this dye for whatever shade I decide to dye my hair next due to its lovely range of colours and good long lasting quality.
Tips: Apply vaseline to the edges of your face to prevent the pesky red dye from staining your skin.
I used the platinum blonde shade from this range as I wanted to achieve a lighter look on my hair.
I was a bit hesistant because of the price but decided to treat myself and buy it.
I found the packaging to be effective because I felt like I was buying a top knotch product because of the classic black box.
Application was simple enough and I could bare the smell. It wasn't to overpowering like some of the blonde hair colours I have used in the past.
I left the hair colour on for the desired amount of time and washed it off but was a little bit sad to see the hair colour hadn't really done much for me.
It came with a toner treatment which wasn't really helpful and I found myself using another toner to try and enhance the silver tones.
I would use this product again but would recommend some good oil treatments afterward which is expected when going blonde :)
I was really excited about using this as i spent a little more this time round, Awesome coverage and love that it gives you a big conditioner that apparently does 6 treatments depending on hair length. I prob wont buy again as it was quite runny and splattered all over the place. Also was excited about the gloves being black(felt more pro) but i could barely get them on with out tearing them, lucky i managed but they might want to look at the sizing, def made it hard to aplly with tight gloves also
I'm a home hair dye fanatic and I'm always exploring and changing my hair dyes every 6 weeks to find out whats new and whats amazing on the market.
I bought the colour fiery red which is blazing pinkish red colour and absolutely beautiful. My hair is naturally dark so a bright red colour would never transend to my hair I but I love the dark red hues that come off these colour onto my hair.
Application and dvelopment was quite pleasant and one box is enough for my medium length hair in the middle of my back. I keep the hair dye on my head for about an hour and theres no chemical burn sensation with this dye even though it has ammonia present.
Rinsing was quite pleasant as well because it only took a few washes and the colour was completely out of hair and the water ran clean. I hate it when rinsing hair dye becomes such laborous task. Not with this one.
The colour payoff obviously wasnt fiery red because I hadnt bleached my hair blonde before, but the red it turned out to be was perfect, very pigment and it looked fiery red out in the sun. The last power of this hair is amazing as it last me 6 weeks and the colour was still great. Some of the red had washed out, but unlike other dyes that wash out almost immediately the colour fade was very gradual.
Tips: If you want a diamond shine along with beautiful pigmented hair colour then this hair dye is for you.
The joys of living rural is you don't really get much of a selection when it comes to beauty related products at the supermarket. When I saw this I was so excited because I had read how good it was and I was lucky enough to find it and now I can't remember where I brought it
I brought 2 boxes of the platinum blonde because of longer thick hair I need 2 boxes and recommend buying 2 boxes to anyone with hair past their shoulders or thick hair.
When mixing this brew you have 4 things to mix the developer, the colour, a powder and an oil it's quite a brew. Application was easy and it wasn't a cough cough I'm going to take your breath away super strong smell of ammonia. I waited the time stated on the box and washed.
Yay when I washed it out yep my hair was platinum blonde alright it was not far off white. My hair didn't feel really damaged after i dried it either. I've had no breakage like I can get after dying my hair either. All in all I'm so happy with this dye and I will be definitely buying it again if only I can remember where I brought it......
Tips: Buy 2 boxes for longer thicker hair
Bought this in the platinum shade as I wanted to touch up my roots to match the rest of my light blonde hair. Being I have been bleaching my hair blonde for years, I knew what I was looking for but decided to try something different and paid abit extra for this. I left on for 45 minutes and rinsed out and used the conditioner that this came with. I did find my hair came out a bit brassy, but with a good fudge toner it came out blonde. My hair did feel quite damaged afterwards though so I'd definitely recommend monitoring it quite closely so you don't fry your hair, as with any bleach/colouring products though.
Tips: Use a good deep conditioning treatment and toner if your hair is slightly brassy.
I bought this after already lightening my hair to do regrowth and to lighten my hair further. It was already quite light but I had some darker sections that still remained. This wasn't on special nor is it the cheapest on the shelf but I thought that would mean it would do a great job. I was eager to try it and finally get the platinum look I wanted.
So that evening once the kids were in bed I made my way through the instructions and it was a bit confusing as all the colour/lighteners directions are on the same page so you have to search out your chosen one... that done and understood I got myself ready. It was easy to mix and apply, I managed to do my hair with the one kit as it was above my shoulders in length and I waited for the length of time specified. It wasn't uncomfortable or anything like that, but the smell was stronger than I had hoped (manageable though).
So I left it on a further 5 mins longer than stated as my hair didn't look very light... in fact it looked darker than it was when I started... I started to feel concerned and checked the packaging again to make sure I had the right colour... I did, but it wasn't looking right and way darker than the picture on the packet.
I washed it out as per instructions and I was fearful of what had occurred. It was browner than I was to start with... how?? was something mislabeled in the packet? I was so upset. I woke my husband to show him... he said I thought you were going lighter?
I had applied the special conditioner as directed in the hope that it would do something magical but alas it didn't do anything other than condition it. Being particularly unhappy with the results and not wanting to damage my hair by doing another lightening immediately after I decided to throw some colours over top to mask it. So my blues went green, my pinks weren't very bright and well I felt happier I was still eager to rectify this.
In hind site I should have contacted the company to let them know but I put it down to me choosing the wrong colour or maybe I had done something wrong but I know that I had the right one and I followed every instruction. Chalked it up and moved on.
I've been dying my hair for 20 years, and will try anything once. I hadn't actually tried this product before, that I remember, so when I was short of things to review and it was on special in Countdown I decided to check it out. Being a new product (to me) I did something I almost never do, and did a 48 hour patch test. I didn't react, so I went ahead and tried out the product.
L'Oreal Paris Preference Hair Colour comes in a black and grey box, with a very 'modelly' looking cover model in terms of her look. I don't usually assume my hair will look like the models, so I like to read the info on the box. This one claims that you'll get up to 8 weeks of brilliant, lustrous hair... literally every hair dye I have ever used has given me 2-3 weeks. I will update this if I'm wrong, but I am expecting this one to be the same. It also includes a 'Hi-shine Elixir' and claims 'perfect grey coverage.
The bottles are seriously easy to mix together. The colourant is a liquid, and you simply pour it into the applicator bottle along with the 'Hi Shine Elixir' (pretty much a vial of nice-smelling oil) and shake it all together.
The applicator bottle is a nice squat shape with a long thin nozzle, which makes application easier.
I hate the gloves that came with this product. I found them hard to get on, and too tight, then they ripped, so I threw them out and used a spare pair I had in the cupboard.
I find this dye to be quite pungent, and you should definitely ventilate the room while using it. I also found that it stained if I got it on anything other than my hair, but that could well be more to do with the shade. I used Shade 3: Brasilia, which is their darkest brown.
The colour thickens a bit in your hair and sits well. It washes out easily and cleanly.
The conditioner provided is a generous 54ml of a thick, delicious, salon scented cream which leaves hair feeling nourished and healthy - and there is more than enough for at least half a dozen decent conditions of your dyed hair.
My hair has been left richly coloured, glossy, and looking great. I will amend this review if the product lets me down in some way with longevity etc but at this stage I'm pretty stoked with this as a new find (apart from those nasty gloves!)
My hair colour to start with is 2nd lightest blonde on the chart. Going by the guide i was impressed on the box what the result would be like. Followed directions to the letter, unfortunately it turned out nothing like what it ideally should be.... or thereabouts. You cannot see the pink/rose in my hair it is so pale. Even after using the colour extender, following instructions, it made absolutely no difference to the colour, it was no more pink/rose than it was before. Very disappointed.
Tips: If anyone could give tips on this it would be great cos i was not impressed and will not buy again. A shame really cos this was the brand i always use.
