I'm a regular at the waxing bar - I get my armpits and legs waxed about every 6 weeks. I've never really delved into other ways to remove hair, I'm not sure why, I guess waxing just did enough to keep me happy.

Until now! The IPL has been a revelation, I won't be returning to the waxing bar...maybe I should send them a Dear John letter. It's not you...it's just...I've found something better.

The Braun unit is easy to use and hold, and comes in a lovely zip up case. I like that they included a great quality razor too - covering all bases.

I found the process quick to pick up and get used to, there wasn't really a learning curve, other than to be methodical. I use the glide method and mainly stick to the larger head.

The growth of my leg hair slowed during week one, it was incredible. Ive been treating my legs weekly and I'm due to do them tomorrow - as I can only feel the most minor fuzz growing back.

Is it painful? Hmm, not really. You feel a bit of heat, but it's bearable - I've been using it on the highest settings for both legs and armpits.

When I consider negatives, the only one that really springs to mind is the cost - but as soon as you weigh up the initial outlay to the convenience, effectiveness, comfort and results you get, well, it blows waxing out of the water.

I spent close to $3,000 a few years ago getting laser hair removal from a well established clinic. I had sessions every 8 weeks for a year and the pain was unbearable, but it did work and was the best investment Ive made.

Given the cost and the time invested in my last treatment I simply did not expect the Braun Silk Expert Pro 5 to be as effective as it was. So far it has won on cost, pain and effectiveness.

Its a third of the cost of my last treatment which was only for a few areas. With the Pro 5 I can use on all remaining areas and top up when/if necessary. Well worth the investment.

Pain - like I mentioned, my clinic treatment was unbearable. I was expecting the Pro 5 to be similar level of pain especially if it was to be as effective as my clinic treatment. There are three settings, I started at one and within seconds dialled it up to three. I have a very low pain threshold (almost pass out getting blood taken) and this is absolutely fine. The more dense and thick the hair is in particular areas the more it hurts but the zap is so quick its over in less than a second.

It is quick and easy. A minute on my under arms and a few minutes on my thighs. You can either hold and drag across larger areas or pulse/zap pressing on the more sensitive areas like under arms.

Ive used this four weekends in a row now and have already seen at least half the under arm hair disappear. I can see there are patches that are still there so I need to zap in tighter sections. But at least I can see that its actually working!

Absolutely recommend! Think of the money you will save on waxing and the inconvenience of all those appointments or having to shave every few days.

I started using this amazing device totally hoping it would work but feeling very unsure. I have always struggled with ingrown hairs and hate summer time so in the past I’ve spent thousands of dollars on laser at in-store clinic with great results (but it’s been incredibly pricey and painful).

I chose to use the Braun IPL every Monday (it pays to be consistent) and after three sessions started to see results. The device is really easy to use, quick and the pain is definitely bearable.

After three sessions my hair started growing back much slower and patchy and I imagine after 10 sessions I would see a massive reduction.

So happy to use this product and would def recommend to anyone!

I had seen these machines around but didn't want to spend a heap of money on something I wasn't sure would actually work. Then it came on special at Farmers and I took the plunge. I should have done this ages ago and saved thousands on salon treatments!

I used this on my arms, it isn't painful at all and results started showing within 4 weeks, I was using it weekly. Now I'm using in on my arms every 3 weeks (or when i remember) and just zapping the few stubborn hairs that need it. It states not to use this in the summer when you may be tanned, but I started right in the middle of January with tanned skin and it worked fine. I'm naturally pale with dark hair. Also use this on other areas of my body, including my face, and there's no pain at all.

Overall, it is fast and easy to use and the powercord is super long, which is a must, and while the results may be slightly slower than professional salon treatments, the price and convenience of it totally outweigh this one small con.

I am super stoked that I bought this machine. I was nervous about investing that much money, but now I wish I brought this ages ago!! It definitely slowed down my hair growth after a couple of consistent weeks of using the machine, and after about 4 months of using it, I have started to notice areas not growing back.

As a gal who has always suffered from excessive hair growth in all the wrong places, the Braun Silk-expert Pro 5 was absolutely life changing for me. I have previously done multiple rounds of laser hair removal treatments at well known laser hair removal clinics in NZ for chin and upper lip area. While the treatments were somewhat effective, as the hair growth around chin and upper lip is often caused by hormones and is at the mercy of good old Aunt Flow, you really needed to keep up with maintenance treatments to ensure the hair does not just grow back and not to mention laser is quite painful! I then got pregnant and basically all off the hair(and some) grew back and I took to plucking and then shaving(bad move). I really didn't have the time to be going for laser treatments every week or two as a busy working mum, so I read the review for this machine and decided to bite the bullet and order it. I started off using it weekly on upper lip and chin and then eventually incorporated my armpits and then my legs. I went from having to shave my upper lip and chin DAILY to now only having a few stubborn hairs which I usually just wait until they start to grow and then give them a zap. My arm pit hairs are now non-existent and my legs(after only 3 weeks) are very patchy and the hair growth is very slow. I am so glad I purchased this machine, it is so easy to use and even better you don't need to leave the house! I don't find this painful at all, similar to others who liken it to a ping of a rubber band but it doesn't bother me at all.

I was lucky enough to be chosen to trial the Braun Silk-expert Pro 5 PL5137 IPL. I am a bit of a wuss and I have only ever shaved to remove unwanted body hair (never waxed), so I was curious to see if the IPL was both better than shaving and pain free!

The Braun Silk-expert Pro 5 PL5137 IPL comes in a big box. Inside the box is a zip up bag with a gold scalloped pattern on a white background. The bag contains the IPL Pro 5 with the standard head, the precision head, an Australian/NZ power cord, and a European power cord. It also comes with a Gillette Venus razor, and an instruction booklet.

I was quite nervous about using the IPL as I had never had laser hair removal treatment before. So I read the instructions very carefully and I proceeded slowly with the device. They recommend using it only once a week for 4 – 12 weeks. I started on one strip of my right leg only, leaving my left untreated, so I would be better able to compare them.

The device itself is quite easy to use. In order to use it the area needs to be newly shaved. The device works by using two skin tone sensors on either side of the head. They both need to be in contact with the skin at all times. The sensors read your skin tone and selects the appropriate light intensity from that. For large areas you can move the device slowly and continuously across the skin area. The device flashes bright red pulses of light as it moves across the skin. It can sting and feel a little bit like being pricked. The device has three settings of light intensity: standard, gentle, extra gentle. Because I was apprehensive about using it, I opted to use the extra gentle setting each time.

I have been using the IPL for about 4 weeks now. The area that I have been using it on, my right leg, has a noticeable reduction in hair growth in comparison to my left leg, which has not had any treatment. The only difficulties I have encountered when using the device is that even with a large area, such as my leg, the curvature of my calves means that sometimes it is hard to get both light sensors on the standard head in contact with the skin at the same time. However, the package comes with the precision head, which is narrower, so it is great for ankles, knees, armpits, etc. The laser flashes themselves are very bright when using the device, and it can be uncomfortable to look at them, so it is best to look away if you can. But other than that, I found it simple, efficient, and quick to use. After my initial trepidation, I was down to using it for only about 5 minutes per week.

Altogether I think the Braun Silk-expert Pro 5 PL5137 IPL is a great way to remove unwanted body hair if you are a suitable candidate for skin and hair tone. Once you are used to it, it is a fast, efficient, low discomfort way to remove hair.

The title of my review might sound a bit dramatic but as someone who has fast growing, dark body hair in abundance this device has seriously made life easier. After using consistently for months I am at a point where hair growth is not only slowed but also the amount of hair looks to be permanently reduced with only sparse amounts still growing back, albeit slower than usual. It's too early for me to tell how long it will take for the hair to grow back as it's not meant to fully permanent and I'm still doing my weekly sessions but after a week of not shaving I'm confident to go swimming without needing to shave and this in itself is great to me. No more daily shaving!! The time and energy saved is so worth it.
