I just found it was drying on the skin, it didn’t help with my black heads like I had hoped. The smell was strong but it went away quickly after washing off.
Just wasn’t for me.

This cleanser has a thick consistency and effectivly washes away the day & night's grime. The gel is dark grey but as it lathers it turns white which is fun! The product claims to specifically target blackheads but unfortunately I have not noticed any improvement to mine. Perhaps in conjunction with pore strips or scrub this product may eliminate/prevent blackheads from reforming. I wouldn't reccomend it as an effective blackhead eliminating cleanser. The bottle is very pretty and the size is great! I also love that it's a pump top because it makes it so easy to get the right amount of product out.
Firstly, I really like the packaging, simple and the pump top makes things much easier to use. The first thing I noticed when using this product was the smell... Very chemically and artificial. It foams well on the face and does feel like your skin is getting a good clean. It left my skin feeling tingly and cool afterwards which felt like I had washed my face with peppermint or something! Very interesting. Overall, I didn't notice a change in my blackheads. I wouldn't buy this again as I feel it didn't do what it said it would and smelt way to chemically for me.
Tips: A little goes a long way
Having blackheads I've tried a few cleansing options But this dried my skin out. It's way to harsh and striping for me personally.
First impression of the bottle was great, it is a nice sleek look packaging and I love the pump! Certainly makes it easier to dispense the face wash. Product foams up well and definitely washes the face well. However that is where the positives wnd for me. The next day I woke up with a greasier than normal face. I thought to myself, maybe this is one of those things that gets worse before it gets better but after a whole week I am getting more blackheads by the day in places on my face that zi didn’t have them before. Therefore I don’t believe it does what it claims to do. It does clean off makeup nicely though.
The Garnier Pure Active Charcoal Gel Wash comes in a nice bottle with a pump. My pump was slightly hard to use which is always awkward in the shower reaching up to shelf etc. Furthermore, products with pumps are never easy to just chuck in your toilet bag and take away due to leakage. The other option is to put some in a smaller pottle for trips away but some of us can't be bothered with that and it's often just more plastic.
I think the packaging is eye catching. The black bottle represents the charcoal product and makes the label really stand out. Not many products have black with facial products so it is a point of difference on the grocery shelf. Like other Garnier products, I like how they include a little bit of info of a small study they have already done on the product. It not only makes the product seem more thoroughly tested, but also ensures that it will likely benefit the consumers skin too.
On application the product is like a clear gel and very smooth and luxurious to apply. It foams up after about 10-15 seconds of massaging which is good as it ensures I'm actually giving my face a decent wash instead of rushing. When rinsing off your skin feels incredibly soft, like it has been exfoliated, however, it almost feels like it leaves a small residue on the skin....which leads me to my next negative point.
Unfortunately, something about this product has caused my skin to break out (I also appreciate my breakout could be completely unrelated to this product). I have even gotten whiteheads around my nose where I only ever had blackheads. I think it has actually improved the size and number of blackheads....but if it leads to breakouts it is pointless. I have finally cleared my skin out over the last 3 months after years of mild acne by removing cow's milk from my diet. It could be a coincidence this product has made me skin have a small breakout. I will have a break from it and try again in a few weeks as if it wasn't for the breakout I really like everything else the Garnier Pure Active Charcoal Gel Wash has to offer.
Would I recommend this to friends? Yes, unless they have acne-prone skin in which I would recommend with caution (but I do appreciate so much more goes into acne than just external products e.g. diet, hormones, genetics, stress etc.).
I would like to think this product wasn't the sole reason for my breakout, and will try again once my skin has calmed down.
Garnier Pure Active Charcoal Anti-Blackhead Intensive Gel Wash promises to visibly reduce the appearance of blackheads. The cleanser is enriched with charcoal, known for its adsorbing properties (attracts dirt and impurities, causing them to stick to the charcoal before being rinsed away), blueberry extract and salicylic acid, which help to visibly reduce blackheads and help protect agains their reappearance.
The dark grey coloured gel wash is packaged in a pump bottle, and one pump of cleanser is sufficient to wash my face and neck. When a little water is added and my palms are rubbed together, the gel converts into a fairly thick white foam (they call it a mousse, but it's nowhere near as thick as a mousse), which is then massaged onto the skin before being rinsed off.
I have very oily skin, so my T-zone (nose, chin and forehead) have quite a number of blackheads, and after using this gel wash for two weeks, my blackheads are less noticeable. They're still there, they're just not as dark or as prominent. My skin does feel clean after using this gel wash, but I really don't like the mentholated forumla. I'm not a fan of menthol or eucalyptus in my face or body products, and if I had known that this product contained menthol, I would never have accepted the trial team invitation.
The amount of menthol in this gel wash is quite strong; its strong enough for me to want to get the cleanser off my face as soon as I start massaging the foam onto my skin as it makes my skin tingle and burn. It's really not a pleasant feeling at all. Personally, I feel that menthol or eucalyptus should be reserved for hair products and should not be added to face or body products at all, but that's just my personal preference.
I'd only consider using this product again if the formula is changed and the menthol is omitted, or they bring out a menthol-free version of this gel wash.
Tips: Avoid the eye area completely!
Packaging looks okay, the bottle is slim which could be good for storage? Pump is easy to work but does squirt out a bit to much product for my liking (half a pump was perfect).
As the packaging outlines the product is black and then turns to white when applied to the face (which I think is pretty cool). The product has the strong "ocean breeze" smell which is nice and refreshing. I found the product was pretty good at taking my make up products off (BBC cream, brow product, bronzer and highlghter). However I did find the product very drying. My normally very moisturising night creme was struggling to counter act this dryness. Upon my first use any pores/blackheads didn't appear to be any different than previous. Subsequently I don't think it made much difference either. I found that my skin was breaking out more than normal using this product.
Would I go out of my way to purchase this product, probably not. Would I recommend to a friend, yeah if they were wanting to try something new out.
Tips: Dont use a full pump. Use highly moisturizing product after due to drying nature of this product.
I have never used Garnier cleansers, other than their excellent micellar water. I have combination skin but one of my major skin concerns has always been the blackheads clogging my nose, centre of my forehead, and around my mouth.
The sleek black pump bottle was surprisingly cool to see when I opened the BR package. The black colour is appropriate because it clearly denotes the charcoal ingredient, and the targeted black head removal action.
What I didn't really like was seeing the jet-black colour of the gel wash itself. It did lather into a white foam, but something about the black colour made me unwilling to put it on my skin. Maybe this is just me being weird though.
I love a good lather, but this gel wash only had minimal foamy goodness. This is understandable considering it is actually a gel formula. I couldn't help but this it would be easier to just choose: is it a gel or a foaming face wash? Why is there a need for it to be both?
The immediate tingling sensation when it hit my face was very unsettling. I have never - NEVER - had a bad reaction to face wash before, so I was seriously surprised and alarmed to feel the prickly tingly-ness. It didn't leave me with any visible damage, so maybe it's meant to feel like this? I know with charcoal and mud masques I often get the same feeling, but only after the masque has been applied for a few minutes - not immediately!
Ultimately I wanted to do justice to this product review, so I continued using it despite my dismay. And after a week of use every evening, I can confirm that my blackheads have been cleansed out of my skin. My nose was the area I felt most self-conscious of, so I felt really good knowing this had been cleared up.
But would I use it again? Based on the weird black gel/foam formula and the feeling against my skin, no. A once-a-week charcoal or mud masque which is only applied on my problem areas will suffice for my personal beauty regime.
Tips: This would NOT be good for sensitive skin!
I am one of hose people that forever has blackheads on the nose no matter what I do or try so I was looking forward to trying this. I have combination skin with a mainly oily T zone and chin which is where I get my blackheads so I used this product only on those zones. After a few days I did notice a slight change in how noticeable the blackheads on my nose were so was pleased with that. However I am now almost 2 weeks down the track and I had to stop using this a few days ago, my nose is completely dry and almost cracked around the edges! This has dried my skin out so badly and it looks absolutely awful! I won't be using this again - while it does reduce the appearance of blackheads slightly, the damage it has done to my skin is not worth it. in my opinion
