Back to Black

I was lucky enough to get placed on a trial team to review this product, and was so excited. I haven’t dyed my hair is so long its hard to remember when I last did it, but I chose the colour 100 Licorice, because I have some ginger parts of my hair from D.I.Y ombre attempts, and I wanted my hair to go back to black.

I quite like the design of the box, it’s simple but effective and give you all the details you need to know. I myself did not find using the box as a stand for the applicator bottle useful, but I’m sure for people other people would find it useful. I actually found the labelling on the applicator, developer and conditioner useless seeing as the product was labelled in 4 other languages, with English being the 5th on the list. This might sound like a small thing, but because I asked my mum to help me out with the back of my hair, I saw how people who were not that experienced with hair dye may get confused. I think it would be clever for L’Oreal to prioritise the English language label. The developer crème is a thin liquid which is white and slightly transparent (because it’s quite thin) and this mixed together easily with the cream colorant, and actually smelt quite pleasant compared to other hair dyes I have used, and application was a breeze. I was surprise that there was actually enough dye for a decent coverage over all my hair, and the applicator tip made it very easy to control how much product was getting released. The conditioner is white and quite thick, and I really like the smell of it. It smells kind of fresh, but I can’t put my finger on the actual scent.

Anyway, the results. After dying and conditioning my hair, well it looked pretty damn good. The ombre bits of my hair were completely concealed, which is amazing because I have wanted to cover those parts of my hair for ages. Additionally because I used this all over my hair, my hair got a boost, and had this healthy shine to it. After 10 or so washes, that healthy shine disappeared, and after about 15 washes I can see the hint of a ginger in the sunlight, but inside my hair still looks completely black so that’s good. So this is a good product, but would I use it again? Probably not as I would go permanent next time to cover those ginger spots once and for all. Additionally since I have dark hair, its hard to use any other colours that are available. However, I do think this would be an amazing product for those who want to freshen up their colour. Additionally, I like how the dye only needed to be left on hair for 20 minutes, and that it had no ammonia.

Not so fussed really

I'm a prolific hair dyer from the day my mother let me dye my hair and I have always used a permanent colour - mainly because I have a lot of hair and wash out colour seems like such a waste of time. I have to say after using this product - I am still of the same opinion. The truth is I am lazy and I like nothing better than to sit in the salon while someone fusses over my hair. Having said that everything L'Oreal says is true and it does live up to its promises but while I loved the colour it didn't last very long and probably because I do wash my hair everyday. In this case I think it is a great product but just not my bag.

Easy to use

Easy to use, gentle on scalp. It leaves a lovely smell however it hardly changed my hair colour as it said. Not gonna use it again as no point in putting any chemical for no reason.

Greys gone

I've used this product several times to cover greys and it works great. However I do tend to leave it on way longer than suggested...mainly because I get side tracked. I use the darker colours and I love the soft feeling my hair has after using.

Tips: I put Vaseline or fatty cream around my hairline to avoid staining

Go to product

I constantly use the casting creme gloss as I know the results and the smell is heavenly. However I do find that The brown colours go a lot darker than advertised on the box, which can be a shock at first, but they do fade considerably. On the upside it makes your hair mega silky and amaaazing.

LOreal Casting Creme Gloss

Pretty good, I liked the colour, and seems to have lasted a while, but hasn't last stayed consistent, some areas are now a lot lighter than others. I do like that it doesn't seem to have damaged my hair.

Pearl Blonde

Back before I started visiting the hair dresser to get my hair done I used to use at home blonde colours on my natural light-medium blonde hair. My hair is quite fine but theres a lot of it. I wanted to try a semi-permanent colour as I didn’t want to permanently stain my hair or have to grow it out. I picked the Pearl Blonde as my skin tone is fair but with a cool base and the ash and violet tones work best with my skin. This was super easy to apply , the mixture was a little bit runny so make sure you have all areas covered that you wouldn’t want any splatter on !. I tend to splat it around somehow (im not even sure how I did it) so it pays to cover everything as I did manage to stain my vanity (just a small dot but I still see it !). Aside from this it wasn’t difficult to apply at all and I did this by myself. I bought two packets as most dyes say two packets for hair that is longer than shoulder length however I easily got away with one packet – given my hair is quite fine. To me it smelled like all other dyes but not like that horrible peroxide/amonia smell you get with blonde hair colour – you don’t need to open your window for fear of suffocating in the peroxidey smell, so that was a nice change. The smell wasn’t overpouring and didn’t linger for a long time. This was easy to rinse out and after using the royal jelly conditioner it left my hair feeling fabulous when I got out (often home dying blonde hair does not leave your hair feeling this way). I really loved the soft silky feel I got with this dye. One downside to this product for me was the colour the pearl blonde on me came out extremely ashy – I do like ashy but this was borderline grey on my hair unfortunately – a very very shiny silky grey I might add but the colour was not right for me. I perhaps should have tried the ice blonde or something different. This lasted longer than I thought a semi permanent would and it didn’t dissapear completely it definitely changed my colour a little bit – but this wasn’t a bad thing. This is very reasonably priced and if it wasn’t for the fact that I picked the wrong colour I would have been really happy with this product. I would definitely recommend this to a friend I would just perhaps advise blondes to be more careful with their colour choices – although I think that’s normally the case blonde is hard to get right with home dyes.

Tips: Blondes careful on your colour choices :)

A great alternative for colour on a budget

I normally go to a hairdresser to colour my hair. But due to tight budgeting I had to colour my own hair.

It was surprisingly easy to use (I hadn't coloured my own hair for years). I only had to use one pack, which I thought was great considering usually I'd have to use 2 due the thickness and length of my hair.

After washing out the product, I was left with moisturised glossy hair, the kind that glitters in the sunlight. My hair retains colour very well so I didn't even notice any fading at all.

Black Cherry

I haven't used a semi-permanent hair colour in almost a decade. So when I got to trial this product, I decided to get a different colour from my normal dark brown and went with the Black Cherry shade.

The product was very easy to use - it didn't drip at all and the applicator was an easy shape to hold and use. The gloves are very small, which is great for my small hands - but they were very hard to get off (I ended up ripping them).

The best part about this product is the smell - no ammonia and smelled almost fruity. The conditioner provided also smells lovely, is very hydrating, and makes my hair feel very smooth afterwards.

The colour was quite subtle - it still looked dark brown/black and only looked red in the sunlight (which is great over summer). The dye covered my greys and gave my hair a bit of life, shine, and gloss. The colour however didn't really last for 28 washes for me - turning into more of a brown/auburn colour, rather than cherry red, after about 15 washes.

I would recommend this product and shade to people with dark hair who are not after a dramatic change, just a bit of colour and oomph.

Tips: Use moisturiser or vaseline round the hairline to stop staining of the skin

L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss

This was my first time using a non-ammonia hair dye, and for a semi permanent I was pleasantly suprised. It smelt amazing, and was super gentle on my hair. I got the shade 530 Praline. It was a deep brown with blonde highlights showing through in the light. The dye was easy to apply, and was super glossy and made my hair look amazing. It has already faded a bit after 6 washes though so I'm a bit disappointed about that but overall I have enjoyed trying this product, and would recommend it to anyone not wanting a permanent colour.

Tips: Try not to wash your hair too much so your colour lasts longer :)
