Cyclone

Our community was flooded a few weeks before the cyclone, and then the cyclone hit! So many people have been devastated. I am thankful to all things that our home was not affected. In Wairoa my ex husband lives and we could not contact him for 6 days, that was the worst 6 days of our lives! My poor daughter wasn't sleeping, not eating, it was awful. Then today, they got power connected and he made contact! Tears of joy were flooding.
This past month has been awful with all the rain. Glad to hear others are all safe.
The first batch of floods didn't affect us too badly, although we had bags packed and were ready to evacuate if necessary, but it didn't come to that. Then cyclone Gabrielle hit and our garden got hammered for three days. We'd barely recovered from that when we had a flash flood on the 24th Feb. Our entire property flooded and our house surrounded by water. We evacuated, not knowing if we'd have a home to return to the next day.
Thankfully, we were extremely lucky. Our house is raised and the waist deep water was 8cm away from coming inside. It all happened so fast. 400mm rain in six hours compared to only 90mm per day during the cyclone. I have never seen so much water rise so fast before. It was scary, and not an experience I'd like to repeat. I'm just grateful my cat, Lucy, decided to come inside before we evacuated so that we could take her with. I would have felt awful if we'd left her behind.
I really feel for those in the Esk Valley and other areas who haven't been so fortunate.
