Now I'm still a complete makeup rookie.. I hardly ever wear a full face because my skin reacts and I break out after.
I recently heard something about mixing oil, silica and water based products ranging from your moisturiser, primer, foundation, powder and setting sprays.
Generally oil and water don't mix well at all and it got my wondering about why I can't seem to get a smooth base. Turns out my moisturiser and foundations are water based and the primers i use are oil and silica based! I found this super interesting!
Does anyone have top water based primers that they use?
Do you mix your oil, silica and water based products?
Has this inspired you to have a look at what base your makeup products have?

Water based primer

Hi, as far as I know water based primers tend to be more hydrating whereas silicone ones are smoothing. Some good water ones are the Becca Backlight priming filter, Smashbox Primer Water and Too Faced Hangover. I have mixed the Hourglass mineral veil silicone primer with water based foundations with out issues but your right, it's best to avoid it.
I ended going down an 'ingredients rabbit hole' working out whether my things are water or silicone based. I don't think moisturisers are too much of an issue. I did notice all of mine are water based so I'm guessing majority would be. It's hard cause you tend to buy a primer based on your skin concern ie pore filling, hydration, glowyness, mattyfying etc rather than focusing on whether it will mix with your foundation. Ive made a list of my products that are silicone or water based and I'm going to experiment on how much of a difference it makes when mixing them
I'm not sure if this is true but in my research I saw someone wrote
"you can use silicone over water most of the time without issues but water over silicone will slide right off"
So yeah if your using water foundations then defo try water primer. I'll test the theory about water primer under silicone foundation as I have a few of each and I'm really curious

Not silly at all. Most foundations will show Aqua/water as the first ingredient regardless whether silicone or water based, but the following few ingredients are the teller. If they end in 'cone' such as Dimethicone and methicone, also Siloxane ... They all lead us to think it's silicone based. If it does have Dimethicone etc in the ingredients but it's listed much further down then it's probably not silicone based. Some are quite hard to decipher thou I've found. If I'm not sure I Google it and and work it out that way.
